NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	1 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:
2 'Send out men, one from each tribe, to reconnoitre the land of Canaan which I am giving theIsraelites. Each of them is to be a leading man of the tribe.'	2 "Envoie des hommes, un par tribu, pour reconnaître le pays de Canaan, que je donne auxIsraélites. Vous enverrez tous leurs princes."
3 At Yahweh's order, Moses sent them from the desert of Paran. All of them were leading men of Israel.	3 Sur l'ordre de Yahvé, Moïse les envoya du désert de Parân. Ces hommes étaient tous chefs desIsraélites.
4 These were their names: For the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur:	4 En voici les noms: Pour la tribu de Ruben, Shammua, fils de Zakkur;
5 for the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;	5 pour la tribu de Siméon, Shaphat, fils de Hori;
6 for the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;	6 pour la tribu de Juda, Caleb, fils de Yephunné;
7 for the tribe of of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;	7 pour la tribu d'Issachar, Yigéal, fils de Yoseph;
8 for the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;	8 pour la tribu d'Ephraïm, Hoshéa, fils de Nûn;
9 for the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;	9 pour la tribu de Benjamin, Palti, fils de Raphu;
10 for the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;	10 pour la tribu de Zabulon, Gaddiel, fils de Sodi;
11 for the tribe of Joseph, for the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi;	11 pour la tribu de Joseph, pour la tribu de Manassé, Gaddi, fils de Susi;
12 for the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemal i;	12 pour la tribu de Dan, Ammiel, fils de Gemalli;

16 Such were the names of the men whom Moses sent to reconnoitre the country. Moses then gaveHoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.	16 Tels sont les noms des hommes que Moïse envoya reconnaître le pays. Puis Moïse donna àHoshéa, fils de Nûn, le nom de Josué.
17 Moses sent them to reconnoitre the land of Canaan, 'Go up into the Negeb,' he said, 'then go up intothe highlands.	17 Moïse les envoya reconnaître le pays de Canaan: "Montez au Négeb, montez ensuite dans lamontagne.
18 See what sort of country it is, and what sort of people the inhabitants are, whether they are strong orweak, few or many,	18 Voyez ce qu'est le pays; ce qu'est le peuple qui l'habite, fort ou faible, clairsemé ou nombreux;
19 what sort of land they live on, whether it is good or poor; what sort of towns they live in, whether theyare open or fortified;	19 ce qu'est le pays où il habite, bon ou mauvais; ce que sont les villes où il habite, camps ou villesfortifiées;
20 what sort of land it is, fertile or barren, wooded or open. Be bold, and bring back some of thecountry's produce.' It was the season for early grapes.	20 ce qu'est le pays, fertile ou pauvre, boisé ou non. Ayez bon courage. Prenez des produits dupays." C'était l'époque des premiers raisins.
21 They went up and reconnoitred the country from the desert of Zin to Rehob, the Pass of Hamath.	21 Ils montèrent reconnaître le pays, depuis le désert de Cîn jusqu'à Rehob, l'Entrée de Hamat.
22 They went up by way of the Negeb as far as Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, theAnakim, lived. (Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis in Egypt.)	22 Ils montèrent par le Négeb et parvinrent à Hébron, où se trouvaient Ahimân, Sheshaï et Talmaï,les Anaqim. (Hébron avait été fondée sept ans avant Tanis d'Egypte.)
23 Reaching the Vale of Eshcol, there they lopped off a vine branch with a cluster of grapes, which twoof them carried away on a pole, as wel as pomegranates and figs.	23 Ils parvinrent au val d'Eshkol; ils y coupèrent un sarment et une grappe de raisin qu'ilsemportèrent à deux, sur une perche, ainsi que des grenades et des figues.
24 This place was called the Vale of Eshcol after the cluster which the Israelites cut there.	24 On appela ce lieu val d'Eshkol, à cause de la grappe qu'y avaient coupée les Israélites.
25 After forty days they returned from reconnoitring the country.	25 Au bout de 40 jours, ils revinrent de cette reconnaissance du pays.
26 Making their way to Moses, Aaron and the whole community of Israel, in the desert of Paran, atKadesh, they made their report to them and the whole community, and displayed the country's produce.	26 Ils allèrent trouver Moïse, Aaron, et toute la communauté d'Israël, dans le désert de Parân, àCadès. Ils leur firent leur rapport, ainsi qu'à toute la communauté, et leur montrèrent les produits du pays.
27 This was the report they gave: 'We made our way into the country where you sent us. It does indeedflow with milk and honey; here is what it produces.	27 Ils leur firent ce récit: "Nous sommes allés dans le pays où tu nous as envoyés. En vérité, ilruisselle de lait et de miel; en voici les produits.
28 At the same time, its inhabitants are a powerful people; the towns are fortified and very big; yes, andwe saw the Anakim there.	28 Toutefois, le peuple qui l'habite est puissant; les villes sont fortifiées, très grandes; nous y avonsmême vu des descendants d'Anaq.
29 The Amalekites occupy the Negeb area, the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites the highlands, and theCanaanites the sea coast and the banks of the Jordan.'	29 Les Amalécites occupent la région du Négeb; les Hittites, les Amorites et les Jébuséens, lamontagne; les Cananéens, le bord de la mer et les rives du Jourdain."
30 Caleb called the people round Moses to silence and then said, 'We must march in immediately andtake it; we are certainly able to conquer it.'	30 Caleb harangua le peuple assemblé près de Moïse: "Il faut marcher, disait-il, et conquérir cepays: nous en sommes capables."

32 And they began disparaging to the Israelites the country they had reconnoitred, saying, 'The countrywe have been to reconnoitre is a country that devours its inhabitants.
