NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	1 Yahvé dit à Moïse:
2 'Send out men, one from each tribe, to reconnoitre the land of Canaan which I am giving theIsraelites. Each of them is to be a leading man of the tribe.'	2 “Envoie des hommes en avant pour qu’ils explorent ce pays de Canaan que je donne aux Israélites. Chaque tribu enverra en son nom l’un de ses chefs.”
3 At Yahweh's order, Moses sent them from the desert of Paran. All of them were leading men of Israel.	3 Moïse les envoya donc depuis le désert de Paran sur l’ordre de Yahvé. Tous ces hommes étaient chefs en Israël.
4 These were their names: For the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur:	4 Voici leurs noms, Pour la tribu de Ruben, Chammoua, fils de Zakour;
5 for the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;	5 pour la tribu de Siméon, Chafat, fils de Hori;
6 for the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;	6 pour la tribu de Juda, Caleb, fils de Yéfouné;
7 for the tribe of of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;	7 pour la tribu d’Issacar, Yiguéal, fils de Yosef;
8 for the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;	8 pour la tribu d’Éphraïm, Hochéa, fils de Noun;
9 for the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;	9 pour la tribu de Benjamin, Palti, fils de Rafou;
10 for the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;	10 pour la tribu de Zabulon, Gadiel, fils de Sodi;
11 for the tribe of Joseph, for the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi;	11 pour la tribu de Joseph, pour la tribu de Manassé, Gadi, fils de Sousi;
12 for the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemal i;	12 pour la tribu de Dan, Ammiel, fils de Gémali;
13 for the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;	13 pour la tribu d’Asher, Sétour, fils de Mikaël;
14 for the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;	14 pour la tribu de Nephtali, Nahbi, fils de Vafsi;
15 for the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Machi.	15 pour la tribu de Gad, Géouel, fils de Maki.
16 Such were the names of the men whom Moses sent to reconnoitre the country. Moses then gaveHoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.	16 Ce sont là les noms des hommes que Moïse envoya pour explorer le pays de Canaan (à Hochéa, Moïse donna le nom de Josué).
17 Moses sent them to reconnoitre the land of Canaan, 'Go up into the Negeb,' he said, 'then go up intothe highlands.	17 Moïse les envoya donc pour explorer le pays de Canaan. Il leur dit: “Montez par le Négueb, puis passez à la montagne.
18 See what sort of country it is, and what sort of people the inhabitants are, whether they are strong orweak, few or many,	18 Regardez bien comment est le pays et quelle est la population qui l’habite: si elle est forte ou faible, peu nombreuse ou importante.
19 what sort of land they live on, whether it is good or poor; what sort of towns they live in, whether theyare open or fortified;	19 Regardez comment est ce pays où ils vivent; s’il est bon ou mauvais. Comment sont les villes où ils habitent: s’agit-il de camps ou de villes fortifiées?
20 what sort of land it is, fertile or barren, wooded or open. Be bold, and bring back some of thecountry's produce.' It was the season for early grapes.	20 Regardez comment est la terre, si elle est riche ou pauvre, s’il y a des arbres ou non. Et vous n’aurez pas peur de nous rapporter des fruits de la terre.” Car c’était la saison des premiers raisins.
21 They went up and reconnoitred the country from the desert of Zin to Rehob, the Pass of Hamath.	21 Ils partirent donc pour explorer le pays, depuis le désert de Tsin jusqu’à Réhob, vers l’Entrée-de-Hamat.
22 They went up by way of the Negeb as far as Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, theAnakim, lived. (Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis in Egypt.)	22 Ils montèrent par le Négueb et arrivèrent à Hébron, où se trouvaient Ahiman, Chéchaï et Talmaï, de la race des Anakim. Hébron avait été fondée sept ans avant la ville de Tanis, en Égypte.
23 Reaching the Vale of Eshcol, there they lopped off a vine branch with a cluster of grapes, which twoof them carried away on a pole, as wel as pomegranates and figs.	23 Ils parvinrent donc au val d’Echkol, où ils coupèrent un sarment et une grappe de raisin qu’ils emportèrent à deux sur une perche, avec des grenades et des figues.
24 This place was called the Vale of Eshcol after the cluster which the Israelites cut there.	24 On appela ce lieu le vallon d’Echkol, à cause de la grappe que les Israélites y avaient cueillie.
25 After forty days they returned from reconnoitring the country.	25 Au bout de quarante jours, ils revinrent de leur inspection dans ce pays.
26 Making their way to Moses, Aaron and the whole community of Israel, in the desert of Paran, atKadesh, they made their report to them and the whole community, and displayed the country's produce.	26 Dès leur retour, ils se présentèrent à Moïse, à Aaron et à toute la communauté des Israélites, à Qadesh, dans le désert de Paran. Ils firent leur compte-rendu devant toute la communauté et lui montrèrent les fruits du pays.
27 This was the report they gave: 'We made our way into the country where you sent us. It does indeedflow with milk and honey; here is what it produces.	27 Voici ce qu’ils racontèrent: “Nous sommes entrés au pays où tu nous avais envoyés. C’est véritablement un pays où ruissellent le lait et le miel: en voici les fruits!
28 At the same time, its inhabitants are a powerful people; the towns are fortified and very big; yes, andwe saw the Anakim there.	28 Mais le peuple qui habite ce pays est très fort. Les villes sont très grandes et fortifiées, nous y avons même vu des descendants d’Anak.
29 The Amalekites occupy the Negeb area, the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites the highlands, and theCanaanites the sea coast and the banks of the Jordan.'	29 Amalec habite le Négueb; le Hittite, le Jébusite et l’Amorite habitent la montagne; le Cananéen est installé près de la mer et sur les rives du Jourdain.”
30 Caleb called the people round Moses to silence and then said, 'We must march in immediately andtake it; we are certainly able to conquer it.'	30 Caleb calma le peuple qui s’en prenait à Moïse. “Montons, dit-il, et conquérons le pays, car nous en sommes bien capables.”
31 But the men who had been with him said, 'We cannot attack these people; they are stronger than weare.'	31 Mais les hommes qui étaient montés avec lui répliquèrent: “Nous ne pouvons attaquer ce peuple, car il est trop fort pour nous.”
32 And they began disparaging to the Israelites the country they had reconnoitred, saying, 'The countrywe have been to reconnoitre is a country that devours its inhabitants. Al the people we saw there were ofenormous size.	32 Et ils se mirent à décrier le pays qu’ils avaient visité. Ils dirent aux Israélites: “Le pays que nous avons exploré, est un pays qui dévore ses habitants. Les hommes qui l’habitent sont de très grande taille.
33 We saw giants there too (the Anakim, descended from the Giants). We felt like grasshoppers, andso we seemed to them.'	33 Et nous y avons même vu des géants. À côté d’eux nous avions l’impression d’être des sauterelles et c’est ainsi qu’ils nous voyaient.”
