Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,1 The LORD said to Moses,
'Send out men, one from each tribe, to reconnoitre the land of Canaan which I am giving theIsraelites. Each of them is to be a leading man of the tribe.'2 "Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."
At Yahweh's order, Moses sent them from the desert of Paran. All of them were leading men of Israel.3 So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;
These were their names: For the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur:4 by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;

for the tribe of Joseph, for the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi;11 Gaddi, son of Susi, of the tribe of Manasseh, for the Josephites, with
for the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemal i;12 Ammiel, son of Gemalli, of the tribe of Dan;
for the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;13 Sethur, son of Michael, of the tribe of Asher;
for the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;14 Nahbi, son of Vophsi, of the tribe of Naphtali;
for the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Machi.15 Geuel, son of Machi, of the tribe of Gad.
Such were the names of the men whom Moses sent to reconnoitre the country. Moses then gaveHoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.
Moses sent them to reconnoitre the land of Canaan, 'Go up into the Negeb,' he said, 'then go up intothe highlands.17 In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,
See what sort of country it is, and what sort of people the inhabitants are, whether they are strong orweak, few or many,18 and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?
what sort of land they live on, whether it is good or poor; what sort of towns they live in, whether theyare open or fortified;19 Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?
what sort of land it is, fertile or barren, wooded or open. Be bold, and bring back some of thecountry's produce.' It was the season for early grapes.20 Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.
They went up and reconnoitred the country from the desert of Zin to Rehob, the Pass of Hamath.21 So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.
They went up by way of the Negeb as far as Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, theAnakim, lived. (Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis in Egypt.)22 Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
Reaching the Vale of Eshcol, there they lopped off a vine branch with a cluster of grapes, which twoof them carried away on a pole, as wel as pomegranates and figs.23 They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.
This place was called the Vale of Eshcol after the cluster which the Israelites cut there.24 It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.
After forty days they returned from reconnoitring the country.25 After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,
Making their way to Moses, Aaron and the whole community of Israel, in the desert of Paran, atKadesh, they made their report to them and the whole community, and displayed the country's produce.26 met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.
This was the report they gave: 'We made our way into the country where you sent us. It does indeedflow with milk and honey; here is what it produces.27 They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.
At the same time, its inhabitants are a powerful people; the towns are fortified and very big; yes, andwe saw the Anakim there.28 However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.
The Amalekites occupy the Negeb area, the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites the highlands, and theCanaanites the sea coast and the banks of the Jordan.'29 Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."
Caleb called the people round Moses to silence and then said, 'We must march in immediately andtake it; we are certainly able to conquer it.'30 Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."
But the men who had been with him said, 'We cannot attack these people; they are stronger than weare.'31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."
And they began disparaging to the Israelites the country they had reconnoitred, saying, 'The countrywe have been to reconnoitre is a country that devours its inhabitants. Al the people we saw there were ofenormous size.32 So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,
We saw giants there too (the Anakim, descended from the Giants). We felt like grasshoppers, andso we seemed to them.'33 veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."
