1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	1 Il Signore parlò a Mosè e disse:
2 'Send out men, one from each tribe, to reconnoitre the land of Canaan which I am giving theIsraelites. Each of them is to be a leading man of the tribe.'	2 «Manda uomini a esplorare la terra di Canaan che sto per dare agli Israeliti. Manderete un uomo per ogni tribù dei suoi padri: tutti siano prìncipi fra loro».
3 At Yahweh's order, Moses sent them from the desert of Paran. All of them were leading men of Israel.	3 Mosè li mandò dal deserto di Paran, secondo il comando del Signore; quegli uomini erano tutti capi degli Israeliti.
4 These were their names: For the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur:	4 Questi erano i loro nomi: per la tribù di Ruben, Sammùa figlio di Zaccur;
5 for the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;	5 per la tribù di Simeone, Safat figlio di Orì;
6 for the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;	6 per la tribù di Giuda, Caleb figlio di Iefunnè;
7 for the tribe of of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;	7 per la tribù di Ìssacar, Igal figlio di Giuseppe;
8 for the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;	8 per la tribù di Èfraim, Osea figlio di Nun;
9 for the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;	9 per la tribù di Beniamino, Paltì figlio di Rafu;
10 for the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;	10 per la tribù di Zàbulon, Gaddièl figlio di Sodì;
11 for the tribe of Joseph, for the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi;	11 per la tribù di Giuseppe, cioè per la tribù di Manasse, Gaddì figlio di Susì;
12 for the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemal i;	12 per la tribù di Dan, Ammièl figlio di Ghemallì;
13 for the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;	13 per la tribù di Aser, Setur figlio di Michele;
14 for the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;	14 per la tribù di Nèftali, Nacbì figlio di Vofsì;
15 for the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Machi.	15 per la tribù di Gad, Gheuèl figlio di Machì.
16 Such were the names of the men whom Moses sent to reconnoitre the country. Moses then gaveHoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.	16 Questi sono i nomi degli uomini che Mosè mandò a esplorare la terra. Mosè diede a Osea, figlio di Nun, il nome di Giosuè.
17 Moses sent them to reconnoitre the land of Canaan, 'Go up into the Negeb,' he said, 'then go up intothe highlands.	17 Mosè dunque li mandò a esplorare la terra di Canaan e disse loro: «Salite attraverso il Negheb; poi salirete alla regione montana
18 See what sort of country it is, and what sort of people the inhabitants are, whether they are strong orweak, few or many,	18 e osserverete che terra sia, che popolo l’abiti, se forte o debole, se scarso o numeroso;
19 what sort of land they live on, whether it is good or poor; what sort of towns they live in, whether theyare open or fortified;	19 come sia la regione che esso abita, se buona o cattiva, e come siano le città dove abita, se siano accampamenti o luoghi fortificati;
20 what sort of land it is, fertile or barren, wooded or open. Be bold, and bring back some of thecountry's produce.' It was the season for early grapes.	20 come sia il terreno, se grasso o magro, se vi siano alberi o no. Siate coraggiosi e prendete dei frutti del luogo». Erano i giorni delle primizie dell’uva.
21 They went up and reconnoitred the country from the desert of Zin to Rehob, the Pass of Hamath.	21 Salirono dunque ed esplorarono la terra dal deserto di Sin fino a Recob, all’ingresso di Camat.
22 They went up by way of the Negeb as far as Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, theAnakim, lived. (Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis in Egypt.)	22 Salirono attraverso il Negheb e arrivarono fino a Ebron, dove erano Achimàn, Sesài e Talmài, discendenti di Anak. Ebron era stata edificata sette anni prima di Tanis d’Egitto.
23 Reaching the Vale of Eshcol, there they lopped off a vine branch with a cluster of grapes, which twoof them carried away on a pole, as wel as pomegranates and figs.	23 Giunsero fino alla valle di Escol e là tagliarono un tralcio con un grappolo d’uva, che portarono in due con una stanga, e presero anche melagrane e fichi.
24 This place was called the Vale of Eshcol after the cluster which the Israelites cut there.	24 Quel luogo fu chiamato valle di Escol a causa del grappolo d’uva che gli Israeliti vi avevano tagliato.
25 After forty days they returned from reconnoitring the country.	25 Al termine di quaranta giorni tornarono dall’esplorazione della terra
26 Making their way to Moses, Aaron and the whole community of Israel, in the desert of Paran, atKadesh, they made their report to them and the whole community, and displayed the country's produce.	26 e andarono da Mosè e Aronne e da tutta la comunità degli Israeliti nel deserto di Paran, verso Kades; riferirono ogni cosa a loro e a tutta la comunità e mostrarono loro i frutti della terra.
27 This was the report they gave: 'We made our way into the country where you sent us. It does indeedflow with milk and honey; here is what it produces.	27 Raccontarono: «Siamo andati nella terra alla quale tu ci avevi mandato; vi scorrono davvero latte e miele e questi sono i suoi frutti.
28 At the same time, its inhabitants are a powerful people; the towns are fortified and very big; yes, andwe saw the Anakim there.	28 Ma il popolo che abita quella terra è potente, le città sono fortificate e assai grandi e vi abbiamo anche visto i discendenti di Anak.
29 The Amalekites occupy the Negeb area, the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites the highlands, and theCanaanites the sea coast and the banks of the Jordan.'	29 Gli Amaleciti abitano la regione del Negheb; gli Ittiti, i Gebusei e gli Amorrei le montagne; i Cananei abitano presso il mare e lungo la riva del Giordano».
30 Caleb called the people round Moses to silence and then said, 'We must march in immediately andtake it; we are certainly able to conquer it.'	30 Caleb fece tacere il popolo davanti a Mosè e disse: «Dobbiamo salire e conquistarla, perché certo vi riusciremo».
31 But the men who had been with him said, 'We cannot attack these people; they are stronger than weare.'	31 Ma gli uomini che vi erano andati con lui dissero: «Non riusciremo ad andare contro questo popolo, perché è più forte di noi».
32 And they began disparaging to the Israelites the country they had reconnoitred, saying, 'The countrywe have been to reconnoitre is a country that devours its inhabitants. Al the people we saw there were ofenormous size.	32 E diffusero tra gli Israeliti il discredito sulla terra che avevano esplorato, dicendo: «La terra che abbiamo attraversato per esplorarla è una terra che divora i suoi abitanti; tutto il popolo che vi abbiamo visto è gente di alta statura.
33 We saw giants there too (the Anakim, descended from the Giants). We felt like grasshoppers, andso we seemed to them.'	33 Vi abbiamo visto i giganti, discendenti di Anak, della razza dei giganti, di fronte ai quali ci sembrava di essere come locuste, e così dovevamo sembrare a loro».
