NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
1 She is the book of God's commandments, the Law that stands for ever; those who keep her shal live, those who desert her shal die.1 Hic liber mandatorum Dei,
et lex quæ est in æternum :
omnes qui tenent eam pervenient ad vitam :
qui autem dereliquerunt eam, in mortem.
2 Turn back, Jacob, seize her, in her radiance make your way to light:2 Convertere, Jacob, et apprehende eam :
ambula per viam ad splendorem ejus contra lumen ejus.
3 do not yield your glory to another, your privilege to a people not your own.3 Ne tradas alteri gloriam tuam,
et dignitatem tuam genti alienæ.
4 Israel, blessed are we: what pleases God has been revealed to us!4 Beati sumus, Israël,
quia quæ Deo placent manifesta sunt nobis.
5 Take courage, my people, memorial of Israel!5 Animæquior esto, populus Dei, memorabilis Israël :
6 You were sold to the nations, but not for extermination. You provoked God; and so were delivered toyour enemies,6 venundati estis gentibus non in perditionem :
sed propter quod in ira ad iracundiam provocastis Deum,
traditi estis adversariis.
7 since you had angered your Creator by offering sacrifices to demons, and not to God.7 Exacerbastis enim eum qui fecit vos, Deum æternum,
immolantes dæmoniis, et non Deo.
8 You had forgotten the eternal God who reared you. You had also grieved Jerusalem who nursed you,8 Obliti enim estis Deum qui nutrivit vos,
et contristastis nutricem vestram Jerusalem.
9 for when she saw God's anger fal ing on you, she said: Listen, you neighbours of Zion: God has sent megreat sorrow.9 Vidit enim iracundiam a Deo venientem vobis, et dixit :
Audite, confines Sion :
adduxit enim mihi Deus luctum magnum.
10 I have seen my sons and daughters taken into captivity, which the Eternal brought down on them.10 Vidi enim captivitatem populi mei,
filiorum meorum et filiarum,
quam superduxit illis Æternus.
11 I had reared them joyful y; in tears, in sorrow, I watched them go away.11 Nutrivi enim illos cum jucunditate ;
dimisi autem illos cum fletu et luctu.
12 Do not, any of you, exult over me, a widow, deserted by so many; I am bereaved because of the sinsof my children, who turned away from the Law of God,12 Nemo gaudeat super me viduam et desolatam :
a multis derelicta sum propter peccata filiorum meorum,
quia declinaverunt a lege Dei.
13 who did not want to know his precepts and would not fol ow the ways of his commandments or treadthe paths of discipline as his justice directed.13 Justitias autem ipsius nescierunt,
nec ambulaverunt per vias mandatorum Dei,
neque per semitas veritatis ejus cum justitia ingressi sunt.
14 Come here, neighbours of Zion! Remember my sons' and daughters' captivity, which the Eternalbrought down on them.14 Veniant confines Sion,
et memorentur captivitatem filiorum et filiarum mearum,
quam superduxit illis Æternus.
15 How he brought a distant nation down on them, a ruthless nation speaking a foreign language, theyshowed neither respect for the aged, nor pity for the child;15 Adduxit enim super illos gentem de longinquo,
gentem improbam, et alterius linguæ,
16 they carried off the widow's cherished sons, they left her quite alone, bereft of her daughters.16 qui non sunt reveriti senem,
neque puerorum miserti sunt,
et abduxerunt dilectos viduæ,
et a filiis unicam desolaverunt.
17 For my part, how could I help you?17 Ego autem, quid possum adjuvare vos ?
18 He who brought those disasters down on you, is the one to deliver you from your enemies' clutches.18 qui enim adduxit super vos mala,
ipse vos eripiet de manibus inimicorum vestrorum.
19 Go, my children, go your way! I must stay bereft and lonely;19 Ambulate, filii, ambulate :
ego enim derelicta sum sola.
20 I have taken off the clothes of peace and put on the sackcloth of entreaty; al my life I shal cry to theEternal.20 Exui me stola pacis,
indui autem me sacco obsecrationis,
et clamabo ad Altissimum in diebus meis.
21 Take courage, my children, cal on God: he wil deliver you from tyranny, from the clutches of yourenemies;21 Animæquiores estote, filii ; clamate ad Dominum,
et eripiet vos de manu principum inimicorum.
22 for I look to the Eternal for your rescue, and joy has come to me from the Holy One at the mercy soonto reach you from your Saviour, the Eternal.22 Ego enim speravi in æternum salutem vestram,
et venit mihi gaudium a Sancto, super misericordia
quæ veniet vobis ab æterno salutari nostro.
23 In sorrow and tears I watched you go away, but God wil give you back to me in joy and gladness forever.23 Emisi enim vos cum luctu et ploratu :
reducet autem vos mihi Dominus
cum gaudio et jucunditate in sempiternum.
24 As the neighbours of Zion have now witnessed your captivity, so wil they soon see your rescue byGod, which wil come upon you with great glory and splendour of the Eternal.24 Sicut enim viderunt vicinæ Sion captivitatem vestram a Deo,
sic videbunt et in celeritate salutem vestram a Deo,
quæ superveniet vobis cum honore magno et splendore æterno.
25 My children, patiently bear the anger brought on you by God. Your enemy has persecuted you, butsoon you wil witness his destruction and set your foot on his neck.25 Filii, patienter sustinete iram quæ supervenit vobis :
persecutus est enim te inimicus tuus :
sed cito videbis perditionem ipsius,
et super cervices ipsius ascendes.
26 My favourite children have travel ed by rough roads, carried off like a flock by a marauding enemy.26 Delicati mei ambulaverunt vias asperas :
ducti sunt enim ut grex direptus ab inimicis.
27 Take courage, my children, cal on God: he who brought this on you wil remember you.27 Animæquiores estote, filii, et proclamate ad Dominum :
erit enim memoria vestra ab eo qui duxit vos.
28 As by your wil you first strayed from God, so now turn back and search for him ten times harder;28 Sicut enim fuit sensus vester ut erraretis a Deo,
decies tantum iterum convertentes requiretis eum :
29 for as he has been bringing down those disasters on you, so wil he rescue you and give you eternaljoy.29 qui enim induxit vobis mala,
ipse rursum adducet vobis sempiternam jucunditatem cum salute vestra.
30 Take courage, Jerusalem: he who gave you your name wil console you.30 Animæquior esto, Jerusalem :
exhortatur enim te, qui te nominavit.
31 Disaster wil come to al who have il -treated you and gloated over your fal .31 Nocentes peribunt, qui te vexaverunt :
et qui gratulati sunt in tua ruina, punientur.
32 Disaster wil come to the cities where your children were slaves; disaster to whichever one receivedyour children,32 Civitates quibus servierunt filii tui, punientur,
et quæ accepit filios tuos.
33 for just as she rejoiced at your fal and was happy to see you ruined, so wil she grieve over her owndesolation.33 Sicut enim gavisa est in tua ruina, et lætata est in casu tuo,
sic contristabitur in sua desolatione,
34 I shall deprive her of the joy of a populous city, and her insolence wil turn to mourning;34 et amputabitur exsultatio multitudinis ejus,
et gaudimonium ejus erit in luctum.
35 fire from the Eternal wil befall her for many a day, and demons wil dwel in her for ages.35 Ignis enim superveniet ei ab Æterno in longiturnis diebus,
et habitabitur a dæmoniis in multitudine temporis.
36 Jerusalem, turn your eyes to the east, see the joy that is coming to you from God.36 Circumspice, Jerusalem, ad orientem,
et vide jucunditatem a Deo tibi venientem.
37 Look, the children you watched go away are on their way home; reassembled from east and west, theyare on their way home at the Holy One's command, rejoicing in God's glory.37 Ecce enim veniunt filii tui, quos dimisisti dispersos :
veniunt collecti ab oriente usque ad occidentem, in verbo Sancti,
gaudentes in honorem Dei.
