1 She is the book of God's commandments, the Law that stands for ever; those who keep her shal live,those who desert her shal die.	1 La sapienza è il libro de' comandamenti di Dio, e la legge, che dura in eterno: tutti color, che la osservano, giungono alla vita, e tutti quegli, che l'abbandonano, giungono alla morte.
2 Turn back, Jacob, seize her, in her radiance make your way to light:	2 Convertiti, Giacobbe, ed abbracciala, cammina al lume di essa per la strada, che ella addita.
3 do not yield your glory to another, your privilege to a people not your own.	3 Non dare ad altri la tua gloria, e la tua dignità ad una nazione straniera.
4 Israel, blessed are we: what pleases God has been revealed to us!	4 Beati siarn noi, o Israele, perché manifesto è a noi quello, che piace a Pio.
5 Take courage, my people, memorial of Israel!	5 Fatti animo, popol di Dio, che la memoria conservi di Israele.
6 You were sold to the nations, but not for extermination. You provoked God; and so were delivered toyour enemies,	6 Voi siete stati venduti alle genti non per essere annichilati, ma perché irritaste l'ira di Dio foste dati in poter de' nemici;
7 since you had angered your Creator by offering sacrifices to demons, and not to God.	7 Imperocché voi esacerbaste corni, che vi creò, il Dio eterno, sacrificando a' demoni, e non a Dio;
8 You had forgotten the eternal God who reared you. You had also grieved Jerusalem who nursed you,	8 Imperocché vi dimenticaste di Dio, che vi nutricò, e affliggeste la nutrice vostra Gerusalemme;
9 for when she saw God's anger fal ing on you, she said: Listen, you neighbours of Zion: God has sent megreat sorrow.	9 Imperocché ella vide l'ira di Dio, venir sopra di voi, e disse: adite, o città vicine di Sion, Dio mi ha mandato un gran dolore:
10 I have seen my sons and daughters taken into captivity, which the Eternal brought down on them.	10 Imperocché ho io veduta là schiavitudine del popol mio, de' miei figli, e delle figlie, alla quale l'Eterno gli condannò:
11 I had reared them joyful y; in tears, in sorrow, I watched them go away.	11 Imperocché io gli allevai con piacere; e gli ho lasciati con pianto: con dolore.
12 Do not, any of you, exult over me, a widow, deserted by so many; I am bereaved because of the sinsof my children, who turned away from the Law of God,	12 Nissun si allegri in vedermi vedova, e desolata: son rimasa abbandonata da molta gente pei peccati de' miei figliuoli, i quali deviarono dalla legge di Dio.
13 who did not want to know his precepts and would not fol ow the ways of his commandments or treadthe paths of discipline as his justice directed.	13 E ignoravano i suoi precetti, non battevan la strada de' comandamenti di Dio, né colla giustizia camminarono pe sentieri della sua verità.
14 Come here, neighbours of Zion! Remember my sons' and daughters' captivity, which the Eternalbrought down on them.	14 Vengan le vicine di Sion, e meco facciano ricordanza della schiavitudine de' miei figli, e delle figlie, nella quale gli ha condotti l'Eterno;
15 How he brought a distant nation down on them, a ruthless nation speaking a foreign language, theyshowed neither respect for the aged, nor pity for the child;	15 Imperocché mandò egli contro di loro una nazione rimota, nazione perversa, e di lingua ignota;
16 they carried off the widow's cherished sons, they left her quite alone, bereft of her daughters.	16 I quali non hanno avuto rispetto pei vecchi, né misericordia pe' fanciulli, e hanno menati via i cari della vedova, e priva di figli la hanno lasciati in desolazione.
17 For my part, how could I help you?	17 E qual ajuto recarvi poss'io?
18 He who brought those disasters down on you, is the one to deliver you from your enemies' clutches.	18 Ma colui, che mandò sopra di voi questi mali, egli vi libererà dalle mani de' vostri nemici.
19 Go, my children, go your way! I must stay bereft and lonely;	19 Andate figli, andate, ed io mi resti pur sola.
20 I have taken off the clothes of peace and put on the sackcloth of entreaty; al my life I shal cry to theEternal.	20 Mi sono spogliata del manto di pace, e mi son vestita del sacco di supplichevole, e alzerò mie grida all'Altissimo per i tutti i miei giorni,
21 Take courage, my children, cal on God: he wil deliver you from tyranny, from the clutches of yourenemies;	21 Fatevi animo, o figliuoli, alzate le vostra grida al Signore, e vi libererà dal potere de' principi nemici;
22 for I look to the Eternal for your rescue, and joy has come to me from the Holy One at the mercy soonto reach you from your Saviour, the Eternal.	22 Imperocché io ho posta la speranza mia nell'Eterno, salute vostra, il Santo mi ha consolala colla misericordia, che verrà a voi dall'eterno salvatore vostro; '
23 In sorrow and tears I watched you go away, but God wil give you back to me in joy and gladness forever.	23 Imperocché con lagrime, e con sospiri vi licenziai, ma riconduravvi a me il Signore con gaudio, e letizia sempiterna.
24 As the neighbours of Zion have now witnessed your captivity, so wil they soon see your rescue byGod, which wil come upon you with great glory and splendour of the Eternal.	24 E siccome le vicine di Sion videro venir da Dio la schiavitù vostra, cosi vedranno assai presto la salute vostra venire da Dio a voi con onore grande, e splendore eterno.
25 My children, patiently bear the anger brought on you by God. Your enemy has persecuted you, butsoon you wil witness his destruction and set your foot on his neck.	25 Figliuoli, sopportate pazientemente l'ira, che è venuta sopra di voi: imperocché ti ha perseguitato il tuo nemico, ma tosto vedrai tu la perdizione di lui, e tu calcherai la sua cervice.
26 My favourite children have travel ed by rough roads, carried off like a flock by a marauding enemy.	26 I teneri miei figliuoli hanno battute aspre strade; perocché sono stati condotti come una greggia rapita dagli inimici.
27 Take courage, my children, cal on God: he who brought this on you wil remember you.	27 Fatevi animo, o figliuoli, e alzate le vostre grida al Signore: perocché si ricorderà di voi colui, che vi ha trasportati;
28 As by your wil you first strayed from God, so now turn back and search for him ten times harder;	28 Imperocché se vostra volontà si fu di andare lungi da Dio, con volontà dieci volte tanta lui cercherete ravveduti;
29 for as he has been bringing down those disasters on you, so wil he rescue you and give you eternaljoy.	29 Imperocché colui, che mandò a voi questi mali, egli pure a voi manderà una sempiterna allegrezza col darvi salute.
30 Take courage, Jerusalem: he who gave you your name wil console you.	30 Stadi buon animo, Gerusalemme; perocché ti consola colui, che a te da il nome.
31 Disaster wil come to al who have il -treated you and gloated over your fal .	31 I cattivi, che ti straziarono, periranno: e saranno puniti quelli, che hanno goduto di tua rovina:
32 Disaster wil come to the cities where your children were slaves; disaster to whichever one receivedyour children,	32 Le città, alle quali hanno servito i tuoi figli, saran gastigate, e quella che tenne seco i tuoi figli,
33 for just as she rejoiced at your fal and was happy to see you ruined, so wil she grieve over her owndesolation.	33 Siccome si allegrò della tua rovina, e fece festa di tua caduta, così della sua desolazione sarà rattristata.
34 I shall deprive her of the joy of a populous city, and her insolence wil turn to mourning;	34 E le sarà tolto il brio della sua moltitudine, e la sua allegrìa in lutto si cangerà;
35 fire from the Eternal wil befall her for many a day, and demons wil dwel in her for ages.	35 Imperocché fuoco manderà sopra di lei l'Eterno per lunghi giorni, e da' demonj sarà abitata per molto tempo.
36 Jerusalem, turn your eyes to the east, see the joy that is coming to you from God.	36 Mira, o Gerusalemme, all'Oriente, e vedi la allegrezza, che da Dio Tiene a te;
37 Look, the children you watched go away are on their way home; reassembled from east and west, theyare on their way home at the Holy One's command, rejoicing in God's glory.	37 Imperocché ecco, che vengono a te i figli tuoi divisi da te per andare dispersi: ei vengono raunati da Oriente fino a Occidente, secondo la parola del Santo, lieti, lodando Dio.
