NEW JERUSALEMNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
That day Yahweh wil punish, with his unyielding sword, massive and strong, Leviathan the fleeingserpent, Leviathan the coiling serpent; he wil kil that dragon that lives in the sea.1 On that day, The LORD will punish with his sword that is cruel, great, and strong, Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the coiled serpent; and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea.
That day, sing of the splendid vineyard!2 On that day-- The pleasant vineyard, sing about it!
I, Yahweh, am its guardian, from time to time I water it; so that no harm befal it, I guard it night andday.3 I, the LORD, am its keeper, I water it every moment; Lest anyone harm it, night and day I guard it.
-I do not have a wall. Who can reduce me to brambles and thorn-bushes? -I shal make war andtrample on it and at the same time burn it.4 I am not angry, but if I were to find briers and thorns, In battle I should march against them; I should burn them all.
Or should they beg for my protection, let them make their peace with me, peace let them make withme.5 Or shall he cling to me for refuge? He must make peace with me; peace shall he make with me!
In days to come, Jacob will take root, Israel wil bud and blossom and the surface of the world be onevast harvest.6 In days to come Jacob shall take root, Israel shall sprout and blossom, covering all the world with fruit.
Has he struck him as he was struck by those who struck him? Has he murdered him as he wasmurdered by those who murdered him?7 Is he to be smitten as his smiter was smitten? or slain as his slayer was slain?
By expel ing, by excluding him, you have executed a sentence, he has blown him away with a breathas rough as the east wind.8 Expunging and expelling, I should strive against them, carrying them off with my cruel wind in time of storm.
For that is how Jacob's guilt wil be forgiven, such wil be the result of renouncing his sin, when al thealtar-stones have been smashed to pieces like lumps of chalk, when the sacred poles and incense-altars standno longer.9 This, then, shall be the expiation of Jacob's guilt, this the whole fruit of the removal of his sin: He shall pulverize all the stones of the altars like pieces of chalk; no sacred poles or incense altars shall stand.
For the fortified city is abandoned now, deserted, forsaken as a desert where calves browse, wherethey lie down, destroying its branches.10 For the fortified city shall be desolate, an abandoned pasture, a forsaken wilderness, where calves shall browse and lie. Its boughs shall be destroyed,
When boughs go dry, they get burnt, women come and use them for firewood. Now, this is a peoplethat does not understand, and so its Maker wil not take pity on it, he who formed it wil not show it any mercy.11 its branches shall wither and be broken off, and women shall come to build a fire with them. This is not an understanding people; therefore their maker shall not spare them, nor shall he who formed them have mercy on them.
When that day comes, Yahweh wil start his threshing from the course of the River to the Torrent ofEgypt, and you will be gathered one by one, Israelites!12 On that day, The LORD shall beat out the grain between the Euphrates and the Wadi of Egypt, and you shall be gleaned one by one, O sons of Israel.
When that day comes, the great ram's-horn will be sounded, and those lost in Assyria will come, andthose banished to Egypt, and they wil worship Yahweh on the holy mountain, in Jerusalem.13 On that day, A great trumpet shall blow, and the lost in the land of Assyria and the outcasts in the land of Egypt Shall come and worship the LORD on the holy mountain, in Jerusalem.
