NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Better to have no children yet to have virtue, since immortality perpetuates its memory; for God andhuman beings both recognise it.	1 Es mejor no tener hijos y poseer la virtud, porque ella deja un recuerdo inmortal, ya que es reconocida por Dios y por los hombres.
2 Present, we imitate it, absent, we long for it; crowned, it holds triumph through eternity, having strivenfor untainted prizes and emerged the victor.	2 Cuando está presente, se la imita, cuando está ausente, se la echa de menos; en la eternidad, triunfa ceñida de una corona, vencedora en una lucha por premios intachables.
3 But the offspring of the godless come to nothing, however prolific, sprung from a bastard stock, they willnever strike deep roots, never put down firm foundations.	3 En cambio, la numerosa descendencia de los impíos no servirá de nada: nacida de brotes bastardos, no echará raíces profundas ni se establecerá sobre un suelo firme.
4 They may branch out for a time, but, on unsteady foundations, they will be rocked by the wind anduprooted by the force of the storm;	4 Aunque por un tiempo crezcan sus ramas, al no estar bien arraigada, será sacudida por el viento y arrancada de raíz por la violencia del vendaval;
5 their branches, yet unformed, wil be snapped off, their fruit be useless, too unripe to eat, fit for nothing.	5 sus ramas serán quebradas cuando todavía estén tiernas, sus frutos serán inservibles; no estarán maduros para ser comidos ni prestarán ninguna utilidad.
6 For children begotten of unlawful bed witness, when put on trial, to their parents' wickedness.	6 Porque los hijos nacidos de uniones culpables atestiguan contra la maldad de sus padres, cuando se los examina.
7 The upright, though he die before his time, will find rest.	7 El justo, aunque tenga un fin prematuro, gozará del reposo.
8 Length of days is not what makes age honourable, nor number of years the true measure of life;	8 La vejez honorable no consiste en vivir mucho tiempo ni se mide por el número de años:
9 understanding, this is grey hairs, untarnished life, this is ripe old age.	9 los cabellos blancos del hombre son la prudencia, y la edad madura, una vida intachable.
10 Having won God's favour, he has been loved and, as he was living among sinners, has been takenaway.	10 Porque se hizo agradable a Dios, el justo fue amado por él, y como vivía entre los pecadores, fue trasladado de este mundo.
11 He has been carried off so that evil may not warp his understanding or deceitfulness seduce his soul;	11 Fue arrebatado para que la maldad no pervirtiera su inteligencia ni el engaño sedujera su alma.
12 for the fascination of evil throws good things into the shade, and the whirlwind of desire corrupts asimple heart.	12 Porque el atractivo del mal oscurece el bien y el torbellino de la pasión altera una mente sin malicia.
13 Having come to perfection so soon, he has lived long;	13 Llegado a la perfección en poco tiempo, alcanzó la plenitud de una larga vida.
14 his soul being pleasing to the Lord, he has hurried away from the wickedness around him. Yet peoplelook on, uncomprehending; and it does not enter their heads	14 Su alma era agradable al Señor, por eso, él se apresuró a sacarlo de en medio de la maldad. La gente ve esto y no lo comprende; ni siquiera se les pasa por la mente
15 that grace and mercy await his chosen ones and that he intervenes on behalf of his holy ones.	15 que los elegidos del Señor encuentran gracia y misericordia, y que él interviene en favor de sus santos.
16 The upright who dies condemns the godless who survive, and youth quickly perfected condemns thelengthy old age of the wicked.	16 El justo que muere condena a los impíos que viven, y una juventud que alcanza pronto la perfección reprueba la larga vejez del injusto.
17 These people see the end of the wise without understanding what the Lord has in store or why he hastaken such a one to safety;	17 Ellos verán el fin del sabio, pero por qué lo han puesto en lugar seguro;
18 they look on and sneer, but the Lord wil laugh at them.	18 lo verán y sentirán desprecio, pero el Señor se reirá de ellos.
19 Soon they wil be corpses without honour, objects of horror among the dead for ever. For he wilshatter them and fling them headlong and dumbfounded. He wil shake them from their foundations; they wil beutterly laid waste, a prey to grief, and their memory wil perish.	19 Después se convertirán en un cadáver infame, objeto del oprobio eterno entre los muertos. El Señor los precipitará de cabeza, sin que puedan hablar, los arrancará de sus cimientos, y serán completamente exterminados: quedarán sumidos en el dolor, y desaparecerá hasta su recuerdo.
20 When the count of their sins has been drawn up, in terror they wil come, and their crimes, confrontingthem, wil accuse them.	20 Cuando se haga el recuento de sus pecados, llegarán atemorizados, y sus iniquidades se levantarán contra ellos para acusarlos.
