NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Better to have no children yet to have virtue, since immortality perpetuates its memory; for God andhuman beings both recognise it.	1 O quanto è bella la gloriosa generazione casta! La memoria di lei è immortale, essendo cono­sciuta da Dio e dagli uomini.
2 Present, we imitate it, absent, we long for it; crowned, it holds triumph through eternity, having strivenfor untainted prizes and emerged the victor.	2 Presente la imitano, assente la bra­mano, e nell'eternità trionfa coro­nata, vinto il premio nei casti combattimenti.
3 But the offspring of the godless come to nothing, however prolific, sprung from a bastard stock, they willnever strike deep roots, never put down firm foundations.	3 Ma la numerosa turba degli empi non sarà buona a nulla: le piante bastarde non getteranno profonde radici, nè potranno poggiare su solida base,
4 They may branch out for a time, but, on unsteady foundations, they will be rocked by the wind anduprooted by the force of the storm;	4 e se per un po' di tempo lussu­reggeranno in fronde, non essen­do ben piantate nel terreno, sa­ranno scosse dal vento e dalla violenza dei venti saranno sradi­cate.
5 their branches, yet unformed, wil be snapped off, their fruit be useless, too unripe to eat, fit for nothing.	5 I loro rami saranno schian­tati ancor teneri, i loro frutti sa­ranno inutili, acerbi al gusto, buoni a nulla.
6 For children begotten of unlawful bed witness, when put on trial, to their parents' wickedness.	6 Infatti i figli nati da illegittime unioni attestano la malvagità dei genitori, se inter­rogati.
7 The upright, though he die before his time, will find rest.	7 Il giusto, anche se muore avanti tempo, godrà riposo.
8 Length of days is not what makes age honourable, nor number of years the true measure of life;	8 La vecchiezza è veneranda, non quella che viene dalla lunga vita, nè quella misurata a numero d'an­ni: la canizie sta nella prudenza dell'uomo,
9 understanding, this is grey hairs, untarnished life, this is ripe old age.	9 età senile è una vita senza macchia.
10 Having won God's favour, he has been loved and, as he was living among sinners, has been takenaway.	10 Perchè egli piac­que a Dio e ne divenne il diletto e viveva in mezzo ai peccatori, fu trasportato altrove.
11 He has been carried off so that evil may not warp his understanding or deceitfulness seduce his soul;	11 Fu rapi­to affinchè la malizia non alteras­se il suo spirito e la seduzione non ingannasse la sua anima;
12 for the fascination of evil throws good things into the shade, and the whirlwind of desire corrupts asimple heart.	12 chè l'incanto della vanità oscura il bene, e la vertigine della passio­ne perverte un'anima ingenua.
13 Having come to perfection so soon, he has lived long;	13 Giunto in poco tempo alla per­fezione, compì una lunga carrie­ra,
14 his soul being pleasing to the Lord, he has hurried away from the wickedness around him. Yet peoplelook on, uncomprehending; and it does not enter their heads	14 essendo l'anima sua cara a Dio; per questo fu tolto in fretta di mezzo all'iniquità. Ma la gente che ciò vede non ci comprende nulla, non medita nel suo cuore
15 that grace and mercy await his chosen ones and that he intervenes on behalf of his holy ones.	15 che questa è grazia di Dio e mi­sericordia verso i suoi santi, è un riguardo verso i suoi eletti.
16 The upright who dies condemns the godless who survive, and youth quickly perfected condemns thelengthy old age of the wicked.	16 Ma il giusto morto condanna gli em­pi che vivono, e una gioventù sì presto giunta alla perfezione con­ danna la lunga vita dell'empio.
17 These people see the end of the wise without understanding what the Lord has in store or why he hastaken such a one to safety;	17 Or (gli empi) vedendo la fine del savio non capiranno quali sia­no stati i disegni di Dio sopra di lui, nè perchè il Signore l'abbia messo in sicuro.
18 they look on and sneer, but the Lord wil laugh at them.	18 Vedendo ciò se ne faranno beffe, ma il Signore si burlerà di loro.
19 Soon they wil be corpses without honour, objects of horror among the dead for ever. For he wilshatter them and fling them headlong and dumbfounded. He wil shake them from their foundations; they wil beutterly laid waste, a prey to grief, and their memory wil perish.	19 E dopo questo essi moriranno senza onore, e saranno in eterno obbrobrio tra i morti; perchè Dio li ridurrà al silenzio, li scaglierà a capofitto, dopo averli scossi dai fondamen­ti; ed avranno l'ultima rovina. Saran nei gemiti, e la loro memoria perirà.
20 When the count of their sins has been drawn up, in terror they wil come, and their crimes, confrontingthem, wil accuse them.	20 Verran tutti pau­rosi per il pensiero dei loro pecca­ti, e le loro iniquità, drizzandosi dinanzi ad essi, li accuseranno.
