NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 Better to have no children yet to have virtue, since immortality perpetuates its memory; for God andhuman beings both recognise it.	1 Meglio la mancanza di figli, congiunta a virtù! Immortale è invero la sua memoria, perchè a Dio è nota e agli uomini.
2 Present, we imitate it, absent, we long for it; crowned, it holds triumph through eternity, having strivenfor untainted prizes and emerged the victor.	2 Quand'è presente, l'imitano, e la rimpiangono scomparsa; e nell’eternità trionfa coronata, vinto il premio delle immacolate gare.
3 But the offspring of the godless come to nothing, however prolific, sprung from a bastard stock, they willnever strike deep roots, never put down firm foundations.	3 Ma la prolifica turba degli empi non avrà utilità, e rampolli bastardi non metteran radici profonde, nè stabiliranno un saldo fondamento.
4 They may branch out for a time, but, on unsteady foundations, they will be rocked by the wind anduprooted by the force of the storm;	4 Anche se per un po' di tempo si svilupperanno in rami, malpiantati [come sono], saran scossi dal vento, o sradicati dalla violenza de' turbini;
5 their branches, yet unformed, wil be snapped off, their fruit be useless, too unripe to eat, fit for nothing.	5 saran spezzati i [loro] rami ancora in sul crescere, e saranno inutili i loro frutti, acerbi a mangiare, e non buoni a nulla.
6 For children begotten of unlawful bed witness, when put on trial, to their parents' wickedness.	6 Perchè i figliuoli nati da iniqui amplessi son testimoni di colpa contro i propri genitori nel [giorno del] loro esame.
7 The upright, though he die before his time, will find rest.	7 Ma il giusto, [anche] se muore anzi tempo, godrà riposo.
8 Length of days is not what makes age honourable, nor number of years the true measure of life;	8 Perchè la vecchiaia veneranda non è quella che dura a lungo, e non si misura dal numero degli anni; ma canizie [vera] è per gli uomini la saggezza.
9 understanding, this is grey hairs, untarnished life, this is ripe old age.	9 e vecchiaia è la vita senza macchia.
10 Having won God's favour, he has been loved and, as he was living among sinners, has been takenaway.	10 Divenuto accetto a Dio, fu amato da lui, e vivendo in mezzo a peccatori, fu traslocato.
11 He has been carried off so that evil may not warp his understanding or deceitfulness seduce his soul;	11 Fu rapito via, perchè la malizia non alterasse la sua mente, o la seduzione non traesse in inganno l'anima sua.
12 for the fascination of evil throws good things into the shade, and the whirlwind of desire corrupts asimple heart.	12 Perchè l’affascinamento della frivolità [e del vizio] oscura il bene, e la vertigine della concupiscenza perverte la mente ch’è senza malizia.
13 Having come to perfection so soon, he has lived long;	13 Giunto in breve a maturità, compiè una lunga carriera.
14 his soul being pleasing to the Lord, he has hurried away from the wickedness around him. Yet peoplelook on, uncomprehending; and it does not enter their heads	14 Accetta al Signore era l’anima sua; perciò s’affrettò [Iddio] a trarlo di mezzo alla malvagità. Ma le genti vedono e non comprendono, nè si figgono in cuore,
15 that grace and mercy await his chosen ones and that he intervenes on behalf of his holy ones.	15 che la grazia e la benignità di Dio è con i suoi santi, e la [sua] provvidenza con i suoi eletti.
16 The upright who dies condemns the godless who survive, and youth quickly perfected condemns thelengthy old age of the wicked.	16 Il giusto, da morto, condanna gli empi che vivono, e una gioventù celermente finita [condanna] la vecchiaia longeva dell'ingiusto.
17 These people see the end of the wise without understanding what the Lord has in store or why he hastaken such a one to safety;	17 Vedranno la fine del savio, ma non intenderanno che cosa Iddio ha stabilito a suo riguardo, nè perchè il Signore l’abbia messo al sicuro.
18 they look on and sneer, but the Lord wil laugh at them.	18 Vedranno e lo disprezzeranno, ma il Signore si riderà di loro.
19 Soon they wil be corpses without honour, objects of horror among the dead for ever. For he wilshatter them and fling them headlong and dumbfounded. He wil shake them from their foundations; they wil beutterly laid waste, a prey to grief, and their memory wil perish.	19 E cadranno dipoi senza onore, e saranno ignominia tra i morti in eterno. Perchè [Iddio] li spezzerà, [benché] gonfi [d’orgoglio], [rendendoli] senza voce, e gli scuoterà dalle fondamenta; e fino all’estremo saran desolati, e doloreranno nello spasimo, e la loro memoria sarà distrutta.
20 When the count of their sins has been drawn up, in terror they wil come, and their crimes, confrontingthem, wil accuse them.	20 Verranno pieni di paura, al pensiero de’ loro peccati, e le loro iniquità saran, di fronte ad essi, i loro accusatori.
