1 Better to have no children yet to have virtue, since immortality perpetuates its memory; for God andhuman beings both recognise it.	1 Quanto è bella la nazione casta con gloria! perocché la memoria di lei è, immortale, perché ella è conosciuta dinanzi a Dio, e dinanzi agli uomini.
2 Present, we imitate it, absent, we long for it; crowned, it holds triumph through eternity, having strivenfor untainted prizes and emerged the victor.	2 La imitano quand'ella è presente; e la desiderano quand'ella è partita, e coronata trionfa nell'eternità, vinto il premio de' casti combattimenti.
3 But the offspring of the godless come to nothing, however prolific, sprung from a bastard stock, they willnever strike deep roots, never put down firm foundations.	3 Ma la moltiplica la turba degli empj non è più buona a nulla, e le piante bastarde non gettaran profonde radici, e non avranno stabile fondamento.
4 They may branch out for a time, but, on unsteady foundations, they will be rocked by the wind anduprooted by the force of the storm;	4 Che se per un tempo nei rami loro germogliano, avendo debile appoggio, sono scosse dal vento, e sbarbate da turbine violento.
5 their branches, yet unformed, wil be snapped off, their fruit be useless, too unripe to eat, fit for nothing.	5 Onde saranno spezzati i loro rami in sul crescere, e i loro frutti saran cattivi, e acerbi al gusto, e non buoni a nulla.
6 For children begotten of unlawful bed witness, when put on trial, to their parents' wickedness.	6 Imperocché i figliuoli, che nascono da illegittima unione, son testimoni, che accusano la impudicizia de' genitori ogni volta, che siano interrogati.
7 The upright, though he die before his time, will find rest.	7 Ma il giusto quando avanti tempo egli muoia, trova sua requie;
8 Length of days is not what makes age honourable, nor number of years the true measure of life;	8 Perocché venerabil vecchiezza si è non quella di lunga durata, e che dal numero degli anni si estima;
9 understanding, this is grey hairs, untarnished life, this is ripe old age.	9 Ma la canizie dell'uomo ne' sentimenti di lui si ritrova, e la vita senza macchia è vecchiezza.
10 Having won God's favour, he has been loved and, as he was living among sinners, has been takenaway.	10 Ivi ch'ei piacque a Dio, fu amato da lui, e perché trai peccatori vivea, altrove fu traportato:
11 He has been carried off so that evil may not warp his understanding or deceitfulness seduce his soul;	11 Fu rapito, affinché la malizia non alterasse il suo spirito, o la seduzione non inducesse l'anima di lui in errore.
12 for the fascination of evil throws good things into the shade, and the whirlwind of desire corrupts asimple heart.	12 Perocché l'affascinamento della vanità oscura il bene, e la vertigine della concupiscenza sovverte l'animo sincero.
13 Having come to perfection so soon, he has lived long;	13 Stagionato egli in breve tempo compiè una lunga carriera;
14 his soul being pleasing to the Lord, he has hurried away from the wickedness around him. Yet peoplelook on, uncomprehending; and it does not enter their heads	14 Conciossiacbe era cara a Dio l'anima di lui: per questo egli si affrettò di trarlo di mezzo alle iniquità. Le genti poi veggono queste cose, e non le comprendono, né in cuor loro riflettono,
15 that grace and mercy await his chosen ones and that he intervenes on behalf of his holy ones.	15 Come beneficio di Dio egli è questo, e misericordia verso i suoi santi, e come egli ha cura de' suoi eletti.
16 The upright who dies condemns the godless who survive, and youth quickly perfected condemns thelengthy old age of the wicked.	16 Ma il giusto morto condanna gli empj che vivono, e la giovinezza loro sì presto estinta condanna la lunga vita del peccatore.
17 These people see the end of the wise without understanding what the Lord has in store or why he hastaken such a one to safety;	17 Quelli però vedranno la fine dell'uomo saggio, e non comprenderanno quali siano stati i disegni di Dio sopra di lui, né perché il Signore lo abbia messo in sicuro.
18 they look on and sneer, but the Lord wil laugh at them.	18 Vedranno, e lo avranno in dispregio; ma il Signore si burlerà di loro:
19 Soon they wil be corpses without honour, objects of horror among the dead for ever. For he wilshatter them and fling them headlong and dumbfounded. He wil shake them from their foundations; they wil beutterly laid waste, a prey to grief, and their memory wil perish.	19 Ed eglino dipoi anderanno vergognosamente per terra, e trai morti saranno in eterna ignominia; perocché Dio conquiderà i superbi fatti già mutoli, e gli scuoterà dai fondamenti, e li ridurrà in estrema desolazione, ed ei saranno in gemiti, e anderà in fumo la loro memoria.
20 When the count of their sins has been drawn up, in terror they wil come, and their crimes, confrontingthem, wil accuse them.	20 Verran fuori tutti paura, rammentandosi i lor peccati, e le loro iniquità stando a petto di essi li convinceranno.
