1 There is a season for everything, a time for every occupation under heaven:	1 - Ogni cosa ha il [suo] tempo, e c'è il momento adatto per ogni cosa sotto il cielo:
2 A time for giving birth, a time for dying; a time for planting, a time for uprooting what has been planted.	2 tempo di nascere e tempo di morire, tempo di piantare e tempo di svellere ciò ch'è stato piantato,
3 A time for kil ing, a time for healing; a time for knocking down, a time for building.	3 tempo d'uccidere e tempo di sanare, tempo di demolire e tempo di fabbricare,
4 A time for tears, a time for laughter; a time for mourning, a time for dancing.	4 tempo di piangere e tempo di ridere, tempo di far cordoglio e tempo di ballare,
5 A time for throwing stones away, a time for gathering them; a time for embracing, a time to refrain fromembracing.	5 tempo di gettar via le pietre e tempo di raccoglierle, tempo d'abbracciare e tempo di star lungi dagli amplessi,
6 A time for searching, a time for losing; a time for keeping, a time for discarding.	6 tempo d'acquistare e tempo di perdere, tempo di tener di conto e tempo di buttar via,
7 A time for tearing, a time for sewing; a time for keeping silent, a time for speaking.	7 tempo di strappare e tempo di ricucire, tempo di tacere e tempo di parlare,
8 A time for loving, a time for hating; a time for war, a time for peace.	8 tempo d'amare e tempo d'odiare, tempo per la guerra e tempo per la pace.
9 What do people gain from the efforts they make?	9 Che vantaggio ha l'uomo da tutta la sua fatica?
10 I contemplate the task that God gives humanity to labour at.	10 Vidi la triste occupazione, che Dio ha dato agli uomini perchè si travaglino in essa!
11 All that he does is apt for its time; but although he has given us an awareness of the passage of time,we can grasp neither the beginning nor the end of what God does.	11 Tutto egli ha fatto bene a suo tempo, e ha abbandonato il mondo alle loro investigazioni; ma così che l'uomo non valga a scoprire l'opera, che Dio ha fatto dal principio alla fine.
12 I know there is no happiness for a human being except in pleasure and enjoyment through life.	12 E riconobbi che non c'è di meglio [per l'uomo] che gioire e passarsela bene nella sua vita;
13 And when we eat and drink and find happiness in all our achievements, this is a gift from God.	13 e che se un uomo mangia e beve e gode benessere per via del suo lavoro, gli è un dono di Dio.
14 I know that whatever God does wil be for ever. To this there is nothing to add, from this there isnothing to subtract, and the way God acts inspires dread.	14 capii che tutto, quanto Iddio fa, dura in perpetuo: nulla ci si può aggiungere, nulla togliere. E così fa Iddio, per esser temuto.
15 What is, has been already, what will be, is already; God seeks out anyone who is persecuted.	15 Quel che già fu, è ancora, e quel che sarà, già è stato: e Iddio rinnova ciò ch'è passato.
16 Again I observe under the sun: crime is where justice should be, the criminal is where the uprightshould be.	16 Vidi anche, sotto il sole, al posto del diritto [star] l'empietà, e al posto della giustizia l'iniquità.
17 And I think to myself: the upright and the criminal will both be judged by God, since there is a time forevery thing and every action here.	17 E dissi in cuor mio:«Iddio giudicherà il giusto e l'empio, e sarà allora il tempo d'ogni cosa».
18 I think to myself: where human beings are concerned, this is so that God can test them and show themthat they are animals.	18 Dissi in cuor mio circa i figliuoli degli uomini:«Li prova Iddio, per far loro vedere che son simili ai bruti».
19 For the fate of human and the fate of animal is the same: as the one dies, so the other dies; both havethe selfsame breath. Human is in no way better off than animal -- since al is futile.	19 Perciò una stessa è la fine dell'uomo e dei bruti, ed uguale il destino d'entrambi: come l'uomo muore, così muoiono i bruti. Uno stesso fiato han tutti, e nulla ha l'uomo di più del bruto. [Perchè] tutto è soggetto a vanità,
20 Everything goes to the same place, everything comes from the dust, everything returns to the dust.	20 e tutte le cose vanno a un luogo: dalla polvere furon tratte e in polvere parimenti ritornano.
21 Who knows if the human spirit mounts upward or if the animal spirit goes downward to the earth?	21 Chi sa se lo spirito degli uomini salga in alto, e se lo spirito de'bruti scenda giù [sotterra]?
22 I see there is no contentment for a human being except happiness in achievement; such is the lot of ahuman beings. No one can tel us what wil happen after we are gone.	22 Pertanto riconobbi nulla esservi di meglio, che il godersela l'uomo nelle proprie opere. E questa è la sua parte: chi gli farà vedere, infatti, quel che sarà dopo di lui?
