1 There is a season for everything, a time for every occupation under heaven:	1 Il y a sous le soleil un moment pour tout, et un temps pour chaque entreprise:
2 A time for giving birth, a time for dying; a time for planting, a time for uprooting what has been planted.	2 un temps pour naître, et un temps pour mourir; un temps pour planter, un autre pour déraciner la plante;
3 A time for kil ing, a time for healing; a time for knocking down, a time for building.	3 un temps pour tuer, et un temps pour soigner; un temps pour démolir, et un temps pour bâtir;
4 A time for tears, a time for laughter; a time for mourning, a time for dancing.	4 un temps pour pleurer, et un temps pour rire; un temps pour le deuil, et un temps pour la danse;
5 A time for throwing stones away, a time for gathering them; a time for embracing, a time to refrain fromembracing.	5 un temps pour jeter les pierres, un autre pour les ramasser; un temps pour les embrassements, un temps pour s’en abstenir;
6 A time for searching, a time for losing; a time for keeping, a time for discarding.	6 un temps pour chercher, et un temps pour perdre; un temps pour conserver, un temps pour se débarrasser;
7 A time for tearing, a time for sewing; a time for keeping silent, a time for speaking.	7 un temps pour déchirer, et un temps pour recoudre; un temps pour se taire, et un temps pour parler;
8 A time for loving, a time for hating; a time for war, a time for peace.	8 un temps pour aimer, et un temps pour haïr; un temps pour la guerre, et un temps pour la paix:
9 What do people gain from the efforts they make?	9 à la fin, quel profit retirera-t-on de ses peines?
10 I contemplate the task that God gives humanity to labour at.	10 J’ai bien considéré la tâche que Dieu impose aux humains pour les humilier.
11 All that he does is apt for its time; but although he has given us an awareness of the passage of time,we can grasp neither the beginning nor the end of what God does.	11 Toute œuvre de lui vient bien en son temps, mais il a mis l’éternité dans leur cœur; or l’homme ne trouve pas le sens de l’œuvre divine depuis le début jusqu’à la fin.
12 I know there is no happiness for a human being except in pleasure and enjoyment through life.	12 J’ai vu alors que leur vrai bien est la joie - et de faire le bien durant leur vie.
13 And when we eat and drink and find happiness in all our achievements, this is a gift from God.	13 Si quelqu’un peut manger et boire, s’il trouve le bonheur dans son travail, c’est là un don de Dieu.
14 I know that whatever God does wil be for ever. To this there is nothing to add, from this there isnothing to subtract, and the way God acts inspires dread.	14 J’ai vu que tout ce que Dieu fait est là pour toujours; il n’y a rien à ajouter, rien à supprimer. Et Dieu agit de façon qu’on le respecte.
15 What is, has been already, what will be, is already; God seeks out anyone who is persecuted.	15 Ce qui est a déjà existé; ce qui sera a déjà été; Dieu va rechercher dans ce qui était passé.
16 Again I observe under the sun: crime is where justice should be, the criminal is where the uprightshould be.	16 J’ai vu d’autres choses sous le soleil: à la place du droit on trouve l’injustice; au siège de la justice on trouve le méchant.
17 And I think to myself: the upright and the criminal will both be judged by God, since there is a time forevery thing and every action here.	17 Et je me suis dit en moi-même: Dieu jugera le juste et le méchant, car il y a temps pour toute chose, et rien n’échappe à son jugement.
18 I think to myself: where human beings are concerned, this is so that God can test them and show themthat they are animals.	18 Je me suis dit en moi-même, pensant à ce qu’est l’homme: Dieu les met à l’épreuve, il leur montre qu’ils ne sont que des bêtes.
19 For the fate of human and the fate of animal is the same: as the one dies, so the other dies; both havethe selfsame breath. Human is in no way better off than animal -- since al is futile.	19 Car les fils d’Adam et la bête ont le même sort; la mort est pour l’un comme pour l’autre. Le souffle est le même et l’homme n’a rien de plus que la bête. Voilà encore une chose qui n’a pas de sens,
20 Everything goes to the same place, everything comes from the dust, everything returns to the dust.	20 que tout aille au même endroit. Tout est venu de la poussière, tout est retourné en poussière.
21 Who knows if the human spirit mounts upward or if the animal spirit goes downward to the earth?	21 Qui dira si pour l’homme le souffle part vers les hauteurs, et si pour la bête il retombe à la terre?
22 I see there is no contentment for a human being except happiness in achievement; such is the lot of ahuman beings. No one can tel us what wil happen after we are gone.	22 Et j’ai vu que l’homme n’a rien de plus à espérer que de jouir du fruit de ses travaux; telle est sa part. Mais ce qu’il y aura après, qui le lui fera voir?
