NEW JERUSALEM	DIODATI
1 There is a season for everything, a time for every occupation under heaven:	1 OGNI cosa ha la sua stagione, ed ogni azione sotto il cielo ha il suo tempo.
2 A time for giving birth, a time for dying; a time for planting, a time for uprooting what has been planted.	2 Vi è tempo di nascere, e tempo di morire; tempo di piantare, e tempo di divellere ciò che è piantato;
3 A time for kil ing, a time for healing; a time for knocking down, a time for building.	3 tempo di uccidere, e tempo di sanare; tempo di distruggere, e tempo di edificare;
4 A time for tears, a time for laughter; a time for mourning, a time for dancing.	4 tempo di piangere, e tempo di ridere; tempo di far cordoglio, e tempo di saltare;
5 A time for throwing stones away, a time for gathering them; a time for embracing, a time to refrain fromembracing.	5 tempo di spargere le pietre, e tempo di raccorle; tempo di abbracciare, e tempo di allontanarsi dagli abbracciamenti;
6 A time for searching, a time for losing; a time for keeping, a time for discarding.	6 tempo di procacciare, e tempo di perdere; tempo di guardare, e tempo di gittar via;
7 A time for tearing, a time for sewing; a time for keeping silent, a time for speaking.	7 tempo di stracciare, e tempo di cucire; tempo di tacere, e tempo di parlare;
8 A time for loving, a time for hating; a time for war, a time for peace.	8 tempo di amare, e tempo di odiare; tempo di guerra, e tempo di pace.
9 What do people gain from the efforts they make?	9 Che profitto ha chi fa alcuna cosa, di quello intorno a che egli si affatica?
10 I contemplate the task that God gives humanity to labour at.	10 Io ho veduta questa occupazione, che Iddio ha data a’ figliuoli degli uomini, acciocchè si occupino in essa
11 All that he does is apt for its time; but although he has given us an awareness of the passage of time,we can grasp neither the beginning nor the end of what God does.	11 Egli ha fatta ogni cosa bella nella sua stagione: ha eziandio posto l’eternità nel cuor degli uomini, senza che però l’uomo possa giammai rinvenir l’opere che Iddio ha fatte, da capo al fine.
12 I know there is no happiness for a human being except in pleasure and enjoyment through life.	12 Io ho conosciuto che fra essi non vi è altro bene, che di rallegrarsi, e di far bene in vita sua.
13 And when we eat and drink and find happiness in all our achievements, this is a gift from God.	13 Ed anche che ogni uomo mangi e beva; e, con ogni sua fatica, goda del bene, è dono di Dio.
14 I know that whatever God does wil be for ever. To this there is nothing to add, from this there isnothing to subtract, and the way God acts inspires dread.	14 Io ho conosciuto che tutto quello che Iddio fa è in perpetuo; a ciò niente si può aggiungere, e niente se ne può diminuire; e Dio il fa, acciocchè gli uomini lo temano.
15 What is, has been already, what will be, is already; God seeks out anyone who is persecuted.	15 Ciò che è stato era già prima, e ciò che ha da essere già è stato; e Iddio ricerca quello che è passato
16 Again I observe under the sun: crime is where justice should be, the criminal is where the uprightshould be.	16 Avendo, oltre a ciò, veduto sotto il sole, che nel luogo del giudicio vi è l’empietà; che nel luogo della giustizia vi è l’empietà;
17 And I think to myself: the upright and the criminal will both be judged by God, since there is a time forevery thing and every action here.	17 io ho detto nel mio cuore: Iddio giudicherà il giusto e l’empio; perciocchè, là, vi è un tempo per ogni cosa e per ogni opera.
18 I think to myself: where human beings are concerned, this is so that God can test them and show themthat they are animals.	18 Io ho detto nel mio cuore, intorno alla condizione de’ figliuoli degli uomini, ch’egli sarebbe da desiderare che Iddio li chiarisse, e ch’essi vedessero che da loro stessi non sono altro che bestie.
19 For the fate of human and the fate of animal is the same: as the one dies, so the other dies; both havethe selfsame breath. Human is in no way better off than animal -- since al is futile.	19 Perciocchè ciò che avviene a’ figliuoli degli uomini è ciò che avviene alle bestie; vi è un medesimo avvenimento per essi tutti; come muore l’uno, così muore l’altro, e tutti hanno un medesimo fiato; e l’uomo non ha vantaggio alcuno sopra le bestie; perciocchè tutti son vanità.
20 Everything goes to the same place, everything comes from the dust, everything returns to the dust.	20 Tutti vanno in un medesimo luogo; tutti sono stati fatti di polvere, e tutti ritornano in polvere.
21 Who knows if the human spirit mounts upward or if the animal spirit goes downward to the earth?	21 Chi sa che lo spirito de’ figliuoli degli uomini salga in alto, e quel delle bestie scenda a basso sotterra?
22 I see there is no contentment for a human being except happiness in achievement; such is the lot of ahuman beings. No one can tel us what wil happen after we are gone.	22 Io ho dunque veduto che non vi è altro bene, se non che l’uomo si rallegri nelle sue opere; conciossiachè questa sia la sua parte; perciocchè chi lo rimenerà, per veder quello che sarà dopo lui?
