Proverbs 23

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;	1 Quando starai alla tavola d'un principe guarda bene a quello che ti pongon davanti,
2 if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.	2 e mettiti un coltello alla gola, se sei padrone di te stesso.
3 Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.	3 Non bramare le sue vivande: son cibo d'inganno.
4 Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.	4 Non t'affannare per arricchire, modera la tua sollecitudine.
5 Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off tothe sky.	5 Non alzare i tuoi occhi a ricchezze che non puoi avere: chè esse metteran su ali come quelle dell'aquila, e voleranno in cielo.
6 Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.	6 Non mangiare coll'avaro, non desiderare le sue vivande;
7 For what he is real y thinking about is himself: 'Eat and drink,' he tells you, but his heart is not with you.	7 perché come l'indovino e l'astrologo, congettura quel che non sa; « Mangia e bevi » ti dirà, ma il suo cuore non è con te.
8 You wil spit out whatever you have eaten and find your compliments wasted.	8 Tu vomiterai quello che hai mangiato, e avrai sprecate le tue belle parole.
9 Do not waste words on a fool, who wil not appreciate the shrewdness of your remarks.	9 Non rivolger la parola agli orecchi degli stolti, perchè disprezzeranno i tuoi sapienti discorsi.
10 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone, or encroach on orphans' lands,	10 Non toccare il termine dei piccoli, e non metter piede nel campo degli orfani.
11 for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.	11 Chè potente è il loro Vindice, ed Egli giudicherà contro di te la loro causa.
12 Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to instructive sayings.	12 Applica il tuo cuore alla, dottrina, e le tue orecchie alle parole della scienza.
13 Do not be chary of correcting a child, a stroke of the cane is not likely to be fatal.	13 Non risparmiare al fanciullo la correzione: se tu lo batterai colla verga non morrà.
14 Give him a stroke of the cane, you wil save his soul from Sheol.	14 Percotendolo eolia verga libererai l'animo di lui dall'inferno.
15 My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,	15 Figlio mio, se il tuo spirito sarà saggio, ne godrà teco il mio cuore.
16 and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.	16 Le mie viscere esulteranno quando i tuoi labbri parleranno rettamente.
17 Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;	17 Non invidiare nel tuo cuore i peccatori, ma abbi sempre il timor del Signore.
18 for there is a future, and your hope wil not come to nothing.	18 Così potrai avere una speranza nell'avvenire e la tua attesa non sarà vana.
19 Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.	19 Ascolta, o figlio mio, sii saggio, metti l'animo tuo nel diritto cammino.
20 Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;	20 Non andare ai banchetti dei beoni, nè alle orgie di coloro che ammucchian la carne per mangiare.
21 for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.	21 Perchè chi si dà al bere e alla ingordigia impoverisce, e i dormiglioni saran vestiti di cenci.
22 Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.	22 Dai ascolto a tuo padre, che t'ha generato, e non disprezzare la tua madre, quando sarà vecchia.
23 Purchase truth -- never sel it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.	23 Compra la verità e non vendere la sapienza, la dottrina, l'intelligenza.
24 The father of the upright wil rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child wil have joy of it.	24 Il padre del giusto esulta contento, chi ha generato un saggio ne avrà consolazione.
25 Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.	25 Possan tua madre e tuo padre rallegrarsi, possa gioire colei che ti ha dato alla luce.
26 My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:	26 Figlio mio, dammi il tuo cuore, e gli occhi tuoi sian intenti alle mie vie.
27 a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow wel , the woman who belongs to another.	27 La meretrice è una profonda fossa, e l'adultera un pozzo stretto.
28 Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.	28 Essa sta in agguato lungo la strada come un ladro, e se vede degli incauti li uccide.
29 For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struckat random, for whom the clouded eye?	29 A chi i guai? Al padre di chi i lai? Di chi i litigi, a chi le fosse, a chi le ferite per niente, a chi gli occhi rossi?
30 For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.	30 Non forse a quelli che si fermano a bere e si studiano di vuotare i bicchieri?
31 Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!	31 Non guardare il vino quando rosseggia, quando scintilla coi suoi colori nel vetro: va giù che è un piacere;
32 In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.	32 ma alla fine morde come un serpente, come basilisco sparge veleni.
33 Your eyes wil see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.	33 Gli occhi tuoi vedranno cose strano dal tuo cuore verran su discorsi stravolti:
34 You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.	34 e tu sarai come uno che dorme in mezzo al mare, come un pilota che tra il sonno ha perduto il timone.
35 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shal I wake up? . . I'lask for more of it!'	35 E dirai: «Mi han battuto, e non ho sentito male, mi hanno strascicato, e non ne sono accorto, svegliarmi per trovare dell'altro vino? »
