Proverbs 23

NEW JERUSALEM	DIODATI
1 If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;	1 Quando tu sederai a tavola con alcun signore, Per mangiar con lui, Considera attentamente quello che sarà dinanzi a te;
2 if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.	2 Altrimenti, se tu sei ingordo, Tu ti metterai un coltello alla gola.
3 Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.	3 Non appetire le sue delizie; Perciocchè sono un cibo fallace
4 Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.	4 Non affaticarti per arricchire; Rimanti della tua prudenza.
5 Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off tothe sky.	5 In un batter d’occhio le ricchezze non sono più; Perciocchè ad un tratto si fanno delle ale; E sono come un’aquila, che se ne vola in aria
6 Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.	6 Non mangiare il pan dell’uomo che è d’occhio maligno, E non appetire le sue delizie.
7 For what he is real y thinking about is himself: 'Eat and drink,' he tells you, but his heart is not with you.	7 Perciocchè, come egli è villano nell’anima sua, Così egli ti dirà: Mangia, e bevi; Ma il cuor son non sarà teco.
8 You wil spit out whatever you have eaten and find your compliments wasted.	8 Tu vomiterai il boccone che ne avrai mangiato, Ed avrai perduti i tuoi ragionamenti piacevoli
9 Do not waste words on a fool, who wil not appreciate the shrewdness of your remarks.	9 Non parlare in presenza dello stolto; Perciocchè egli sprezzerà il senno de’ tuoi ragionamenti
10 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone, or encroach on orphans' lands,	10 Non rimuovere il termine antico; E non entrare ne’ campi degli orfani.
11 for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.	11 Perciocchè il lor riscotitore è potente; Egli difenderà la causa loro contro a te
12 Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to instructive sayings.	12 Porgi il tuo cuore all’ammaestramento, E le tue orecchie a’ detti della scienza.
13 Do not be chary of correcting a child, a stroke of the cane is not likely to be fatal.	13 Non risparmiare la correzione al fanciullo; Benchè tu lo batti con la verga, non però morrà.
14 Give him a stroke of the cane, you wil save his soul from Sheol.	14 Tu lo batterai con la verga, E libererai l’anima sua dall’inferno.
15 My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,	15 Figliuol mio, se il tuo cuore è savio, Il mio cuore altresì se ne rallegrerà.
16 and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.	16 E le mie reni gioiranno, Quando le tue labbra parleranno cose diritte
17 Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;	17 Il cuor tuo non porti invidia a’ peccatori; Anzi attienti sempre al timore del Signore.
18 for there is a future, and your hope wil not come to nothing.	18 Perciocchè, se vi è premio, La tua speranza non sarà troncata
19 Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.	19 Ascolta, figliuol mio, e sii savio; E addirizza il tuo cuore nella diritta via.
20 Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;	20 Non esser de’ bevitori di vino; Nè de’ ghiotti mangiatori di carne.
21 for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.	21 Perciocchè l’ubbriaco ed il ghiotto impoveriranno; Ed il sonnecchiare farà vestire stracci.
22 Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.	22 Ubbidisci a tuo padre, il qual ti ha generato; E non isprezzar tua madre, quando sarà divenuta vecchia.
23 Purchase truth -- never sel it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.	23 Compera verità, e non venderla, Compera sapienza, ammaestramento, ed intendimento.
24 The father of the upright wil rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child wil have joy of it.	24 Il padre del giusto gioirà grandemente; E chi avrà generato un savio, ne avrà allegrezza.
25 Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.	25 Fa’ che tuo padre e tua madre si rallegrino; E che quella che ti ha partorito gioisca.
26 My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:	26 Figliuol mio, recami il tuo cuore, E gli occhi tuoi guardino le mie vie.
27 a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow wel , the woman who belongs to another.	27 Perciocchè la meretrice è una fossa profonda, E la straniera un pozzo stretto.
28 Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.	28 Ed anche ella sta agli agguati, come un ladrone; Ed accresce il numero de’ malfattori fra gli uomini
29 For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struckat random, for whom the clouded eye?	29 A cui avvengono i guai? a cui i lai? A cui le contese? a cui i rammarichi? A cui le battiture senza cagione? a cui il rossore degli occhi?
30 For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.	30 A quelli che si fermano lungamente appresso il vino; A quelli che vanno cercando da mescere.
31 Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!	31 Non riguardare il vino, quando rosseggia, Quando sfavilla nella coppa, E cammina diritto.
32 In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.	32 Egli morderà alla fine come il serpente, E pungerà come l’aspido.
33 Your eyes wil see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.	33 Allora gli occhi tuoi vedranno cose strane, E il tuo cuore parlerà cose stravolte.
34 You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.	34 E tu sarai come chi giace in mezzo al mare, E come chi dorme in su la cima dell’albero della nave.
35 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shal I wake up? . . I'lask for more of it!'	35 Tu dirai: Altri mi ha battuto, ed io non ne ho sentita la doglia; Altri mi ha pesto, ed io non me ne sono avveduto; Quando mi risveglierò? io tornerò a cercarlo ancora
