Proverbs 23

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;	1 Si te sientas a comer con poderoso, mira bien al que está frente a ti;
2 if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.	2 pon un cuchillo a tu garganta si eres hombre de apetito;
3 Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.	3 no desees sus manjares, porque es alimento engañoso.
4 Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.	4 No te fatigues por eniquecerte, deja de pensar en ello.
5 Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off tothe sky.	5 Pones tus ojos en ello y no hay nada. Porque se hace alas como águila, y se vuela hasta el cielo.
6 Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.	6 No comas pan con hombre de malas intenciones, ni desees sus manjares.
7 For what he is real y thinking about is himself: 'Eat and drink,' he tells you, but his heart is not with you.	7 Porque, según lo que calcula en su interior, te dice: «¡Come y bebe!», pero su corazón no está contigo.
8 You wil spit out whatever you have eaten and find your compliments wasted.	8 Nada más comer lo vomitarías y tus palabras amables serían tu ruina.
9 Do not waste words on a fool, who wil not appreciate the shrewdness of your remarks.	9 A oídos de necio no hables, porque se burlará de la prudencia de tus dichos.
10 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone, or encroach on orphans' lands,	10 No desplaces el lindero antiguo, no entres en el campo de los huérfanos,
11 for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.	11 porque su vengador es poderoso, y defendería su pleito contra ti.
12 Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to instructive sayings.	12 Aplica tu corazón a la instrucción, y tus oídos a las palabras de la ciencia.
13 Do not be chary of correcting a child, a stroke of the cane is not likely to be fatal.	13 No ahorres corrección al niño, que no se va a morir porque le castigues con la vara.
14 Give him a stroke of the cane, you wil save his soul from Sheol.	14 Con la vara le castigarás y librarás su alma del seol.
15 My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,	15 Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, se alegrará también mi corazón,
16 and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.	16 y exultarán mis riñones al decir tus labios cosas rectas.
17 Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;	17 No envidie tu corazón a los pecadores, más bien en el temor de Yahveh permanezca todo el día,
18 for there is a future, and your hope wil not come to nothing.	18 porque hay un mañana, y tu esperanza no será aniquilada.
19 Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.	19 Escucha, hijo, y serás sabio, y endereza tu corazón por el camino...
20 Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;	20 No seas de los que se emborrachan de vino, ni de los que se ahítan de carne,
21 for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.	21 porque borracho y glotón se empobrecen y el sopor se viste de harapos.
22 Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.	22 Escucha a tu padre, que él te engendró, y no desprecies a tu madre por ser vieja.
23 Purchase truth -- never sel it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.	23 Adquiere la verdad y no la vendas: la sabiduría, la instrucción, la inteligencia.
24 The father of the upright wil rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child wil have joy of it.	24 El padre del justo rebosa de gozo, quien engendra un sabio por él se regocija.
25 Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.	25 Se alegrarán tu padre y tu madre, y gozará la que te ha engendrado.
26 My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:	26 Dame, hijo mío, tu corazón, y que tus ojos hallen deleite en mis caminos.
27 a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow wel , the woman who belongs to another.	27 Fosa profunda es la prostituta, pozo angosto la mujer extraña.
28 Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.	28 También ella como ladrón pone emboscadas, y multiplica entre los hombres los traidores.
29 For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struckat random, for whom the clouded eye?	29 ¿Para quién las «Desgracias»? ¿para quién los «Ayes»? ¿para quién los litigios? ¿para quién los lloros? ¿para quién los golpes sin motivo? ¿para quién los ojos turbios?
30 For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.	30 Para los que se eternizan con el vino, los que van en busca de vinos mezclados.
31 Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!	31 No mires el vino: ¡Qué buen color tiene! ¡cómo brinca en la copa! ¡qué bien entra!
32 In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.	32 Pero, a la postre, como serpiente muerde, como víbora pica.
33 Your eyes wil see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.	33 Tus ojos verán cosas extrañas, y tu corazón hablará sin ton ni son.
34 You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.	34 Estarás como acostado en el corazón del mar, o acostado en la punta de un mástil.
35 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shal I wake up? . . I'lask for more of it!'	35 «Me han golpeado, pero no estoy enfermo; me han tundido a palos, pero no lo he sentido, ¿Cuándo me despertaré...?, me lo seguiré preguntando».
