Proverbs 23

1 If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;	1 Ha leülsz, hogy fejedelemmel egyél, arra legyen gondod, amit eléd raknak,
2 if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.	2 tégy kést a torkodra, hogy uralkodni tudj kívánságodon.
3 Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.	3 Pompás falatjait ne kívánd, mert csalfa étel az!
4 Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.	4 Ne törd magadat gazdagság után, és mérsékeld élelmességedet!
5 Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off tothe sky.	5 Ne emeld szemedet olyan javakra, amelyek a tieid nem lehetnek, mert azok szárnyra kapnak, mint a sas, és az ég felé elröpülnek.
6 Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.	6 Ne étkezz irigy emberrel, és ne kívánd pompás falatjait,
7 For what he is real y thinking about is himself: 'Eat and drink,' he tells you, but his heart is not with you.	7 mert mint a bűvész és a jós, arra következtet, amit nem tud. Mondja ugyan: »Egyél csak! Igyál csak!« de nem mondja neked szívből,
8 You wil spit out whatever you have eaten and find your compliments wasted.	8 a lenyelt falatot még kihányod, és szép szavaidat hiába vesztegeted.
9 Do not waste words on a fool, who wil not appreciate the shrewdness of your remarks.	9 Ne beszélj a balgák fülébe, mert lenézik okos beszédeidet!
10 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone, or encroach on orphans' lands,	10 El ne mozdítsd a kiskorúak határkövét, és be ne nyomulj az árvák földjére,
11 for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.	11 mert erős a gyámoluk, s ő magára vállalja pörüket ellened!
12 Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to instructive sayings.	12 Nyisd meg szívedet az intelemnek, és füledet az okos beszédnek!
13 Do not be chary of correcting a child, a stroke of the cane is not likely to be fatal.	13 Ne sajnáld a fiútól a fenyítést! Nem hal az meg, ha vesszővel sújtod!
14 Give him a stroke of the cane, you wil save his soul from Sheol.	14 Te pálcával vered őt, és lelkét az alvilágtól mented meg!
15 My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,	15 Fiam! Ha szíved bölcs lesz, az én szívem is örvendez veled,
16 and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.	16 és bensőmben vigadok, amikor ajkad helyesen beszél.
17 Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;	17 Ne induljon fel szíved a bűnösök miatt, hanem az Úr félelmében légy szüntelen,
18 for there is a future, and your hope wil not come to nothing.	18 hisz van reményed a jövendőben, és bizakodásod meg nem hiúsul!
19 Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.	19 Figyelj, fiam, és légy bölcs, irányítsd szívedet az egyenes útra!
20 Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;	20 Ne végy részt a nagyivók lakomáin, sem azok tobzódásain, akik hússal tömik magukat,
21 for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.	21 mert a nagyivó és a lakmározó elzüllik, és a naphosszat alvó rongyokba öltözik.
22 Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.	22 Hallgass atyádra, aki nemzett téged, és ne vesd meg anyádat, mikor megöregszik!
23 Purchase truth -- never sel it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.	23 Igazságot vásárolj – és el ne add! – bölcsességet, fegyelmet és okosságot!
24 The father of the upright wil rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child wil have joy of it.	24 Ujjonghat az igaznak atyja, aki bölcset nemzett, örömét lelheti benne.
25 Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.	25 Örvendjen tehát atyád és anyád, vigadjon, aki szült téged!
26 My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:	26 Add nekem, fiam, szívedet, és szemed vigyázzon útjaimra,
27 a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow wel , the woman who belongs to another.	27 mert a feslett nő mély verem, s az idegen asszony szűk kút,
28 Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.	28 lesben áll az úton, mint a rabló, és megöli azokat, akiket óvatlannak lát.
29 For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struckat random, for whom the clouded eye?	29 Ki mondja: »Óh?« Ki mondja: »Jaj, atyám?« Ki a veszekedő és ki esik verembe? Kinek vannak sebei ok nélkül? Kinek vörös a szeme?
30 For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.	30 Nem azoknak, akik bor mellett mulatnak, és szorgalmasak a poharazgatásban?
31 Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!	31 Ne nézd a bort, hogyan piroslik, s hogy miként villog a serlegben! Könnyen csúszik az lefelé,
32 In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.	32 de végül mar, mint a kígyó, és kilövi a mérgét, mint a vipera.
33 Your eyes wil see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.	33 A szemed fura dolgokat lát, és szíved bolondokat beszél,
34 You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.	34 úgy vagy, mintha a tenger közepén feküdnél, mint az alvó kormányos, aki elvesztette a kormányt.
35 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shal I wake up? . . I'lask for more of it!'	35 Így szólsz: »Elvertek ugyan, de nem fájt nekem, ütöttek, de nem éreztem. Mikor ébredek fel, hogy a bort ismét felkeressem?«
