Proverbs 23

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;	1 Quando te assentares à mesa com um grande, considera com atenção quem está diante de ti:
2 if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.	2 põe uma faca na tua garganta, se tu sentes muito apetite;
3 Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.	3 não cobices seus manjares que são alimentos enganosos.
4 Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.	4 Não te afadigues para te enriqueceres, evita aplicar a isso teu espírito.
5 Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off tothe sky.	5 Mal fixas os olhos nos bens, e nada mais há, porque a riqueza tem asas como a águia que voa para o céu.
6 Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.	6 Não comas com homem invejoso, não cobices seus manjares,
7 For what he is real y thinking about is himself: 'Eat and drink,' he tells you, but his heart is not with you.	7 porque ele se mostra tal qual se calculou em si mesmo. Ele te diz: Come e bebe, mas seu coração não está contigo.
8 You wil spit out whatever you have eaten and find your compliments wasted.	8 Comido o bocado, tu o vomitarás e desperdiçarás tuas amabilidades.
9 Do not waste words on a fool, who wil not appreciate the shrewdness of your remarks.	9 Não fales aos ouvidos do insensato porque ele desprezaria a sabedoria de tuas palavras.
10 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone, or encroach on orphans' lands,	10 Não toques no marco antigo, não penetres na terra dos órfãos
11 for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.	11 porque seu vingador é poderoso e defenderá sua causa contra ti.
12 Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to instructive sayings.	12 Aplica teu coração à instrução e teus ouvidos às palavras da ciência.
13 Do not be chary of correcting a child, a stroke of the cane is not likely to be fatal.	13 Não poupes ao menino a correção: se tu o castigares com a vara, ele não morrerá,
14 Give him a stroke of the cane, you wil save his soul from Sheol.	14 castigando-o com a vara, salvarás sua vida da morada dos mortos.
15 My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,	15 Meu filho, se o teu espírito for sábio, meu coração alegrar-se-á contigo!
16 and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.	16 Meus rins estremecerão de alegria, quando teus lábios proferirem palavras retas.
17 Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;	17 Que teu coração não inveje os pecadores, mas permaneça sempre no temor do Senhor
18 for there is a future, and your hope wil not come to nothing.	18 porque {então} haverá certamente um futuro e tua esperança não será frustrada.
19 Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.	19 Ouve, meu filho: sê sabio, dirige teu coração pelo caminho reto,
20 Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;	20 não te ajuntes com os bebedores de vinho, com aqueles que devoram carnes,
21 for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.	21 pois o ébrio e o glutão se empobrecem e a sonolência veste-se com andrajos.
22 Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.	22 Dá ouvidos a teu pai, àquele que te gerou e não desprezes tua mãe quando envelhecer.
23 Purchase truth -- never sel it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.	23 Adquire a verdade e não a vendas, adquire sabedoria, instruções e inteligência.
24 The father of the upright wil rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child wil have joy of it.	24 O pai do justo exultará de alegria; aquele que gerou um sábio alegrar-se-á nele.
25 Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.	25 Que teu pai se alegre por tua causa, que viva na alegria aquela que te deu à luz!
26 My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:	26 Meu filho, dá-me teu coração. Que teus olhos observem meus caminhos,
27 a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow wel , the woman who belongs to another.	27 pois a meretriz é uma fossa profunda e a entranha, um poço estreito:
28 Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.	28 como um salteador ele fica de emboscada e, entre os homens, multiplica os infiéis.
29 For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struckat random, for whom the clouded eye?	29 Para quem os ah? Para quem os ais? Para quem as contendas? Para quem as queixas? Para quem as feridas sem motivo? Para quem o vermelho dos olhos?
30 For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.	30 Para aqueles que permanecem junto ao vinho, para aqueles que vão saborear o vinho misturado.
31 Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!	31 Não consideres o vinho: como ele é vermelho, como brilha no copo, como corre suavemente!
32 In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.	32 Mas, no fim, morde como uma serpente e pica como um basilisco!
33 Your eyes wil see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.	33 Os teus olhos verão coisas estranhas, teu coração pronunciará coisas incoerentes.
34 You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.	34 Serás como um homem adormecido no fundo do mar, ou deitado no cimo dum mastro:
35 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shal I wake up? . . I'lask for more of it!'	35 Feriram-me, dirás tu; e não sinto dor! Bateram-me... e não sinto nada. Quando despertei eu? Quero mais ainda!
