Proverbs 23

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;	1 Si te sientas a la mesa con un señor, fíjate bien en lo que tienes delante;
2 if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.	2 clava un cuchillo en tu garganta, si tienes mucho apetito.
3 Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.	3 No ambiciones sus manjares, porque son un alimento engañoso.
4 Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.	4 No te afanes por enriquecerte, deja de pensar en eso.
5 Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off tothe sky.	5 Tus ojos vuelan hacia la riqueza, y ya no hay nada, porque ella se pone alas y vuela hacia el cielo como un águila.
6 Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.	6 No comas el pan del hombre malicioso ni codicies sus manjares,

11 for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.	11 porque su Vengador es poderoso y defenderá su causa contra ti.

15 My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,	15 Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, también se alegrará mi corazón:
16 and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.	16 mis entrañas se regocijarán, cuando tus labios hablen con rectitud.
17 Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;	17 Que tu corazón no envidie a los pecadores, sino que siempre tema al Señor.
18 for there is a future, and your hope wil not come to nothing.	18 Así, ciertamente, tendrás un porvenir y tu esperanza no quedará defraudada.
19 Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.	19 Escucha, hijo mío, y te harás sabio, y enderezarás tu corazón por el buen camino.
20 Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;	20 No te juntes con los borrachos ni con los que se hartan de carne,
21 for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.	21 porque el borracho y el glotón se empobrecen, y la modorra hace andar vestido con harapos.
22 Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.	22 Escucha a tu padre, que te engendró, y no desprecies a tu madre cuando sea vieja.
23 Purchase truth -- never sel it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.	23 Adquiere la verdad y no la vendas, lo mismo que la sabiduría, la instrucción y la inteligencia.
24 The father of the upright wil rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child wil have joy of it.	24 El padre de un justo se llena de gozo, el que tiene un hijo sabio se alegra por él:
25 Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.	25 ¡que se alegren tu padre y tu madre y se llene de gozo la que te hizo nacer!
26 My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:	26 Hijo mío, préstame atención y acepta de buena gana mis caminos.
27 a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow wel , the woman who belongs to another.	27 Porque la prostituta es una fosa profunda y la mujer extraña, un pozo estrecho:
28 Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.	28 también ella está al acecho como un ladrón y multiplica las traiciones entre los hombres.
29 For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struckat random, for whom the clouded eye?	29 ¿Para quién los lamentos? ¿Para quién los quejidos? ¿Para quién las querellas? ¿Para quién los suspiros? ¿Para quién las heridas sin motivo? ¿Para quién la mirada turbia?
30 For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.	30 Para los que se pasan bebiendo y van en busca de vino aromatizado.
31 Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!	31 No mires el vino: ¡qué rojo es! ¡Cómo centellea en la copa! ¡Cómo fluye suavemente!
32 In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.	32 Pero al fin muerde como una serpiente y pica como una víbora.
33 Your eyes wil see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.	33 Tus ojos verán cosas extrañas, tu corazón hablará sin ton ni son;
34 You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.	34 serás como un hombre acostado en alta mar, acostado en la punta de un mástil.
35 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shal I wake up? . . I'lask for more of it!'	35 «Me han golpeado, pero no me dolió; me han pegado, pero no me di cuenta. ¿Cuándo me despertaré? ¡Volveré a pedir más todavía!».
