Proverbs 23

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;	1 Quando siedi a mangiare con uno che ha autorità, bada bene a ciò che ti è messo davanti;
2 if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.	2 mettiti un coltello alla gola, se hai molto appetito.
3 Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.	3 Non bramare le sue ghiottonerie, perché sono un cibo fallace.
4 Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.	4 Non affannarti per accumulare ricchezze, sii intelligente e rinuncia.
5 Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off tothe sky.	5 Su di esse volano i tuoi occhi ma già non ci sono più: perché mettono ali come aquila e volano verso il cielo.
6 Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.	6 Non mangiare il pane dell’avaro e non bramare le sue ghiottonerie,
7 For what he is real y thinking about is himself: 'Eat and drink,' he tells you, but his heart is not with you.	7 perché, come uno che pensa solo a se stesso, ti dirà: «Mangia e bevi», ma il suo cuore non è con te.
8 You wil spit out whatever you have eaten and find your compliments wasted.	8 Vomiterai il boccone che hai mangiato e rovinerai le tue parole gentili.
9 Do not waste words on a fool, who wil not appreciate the shrewdness of your remarks.	9 Non parlare agli orecchi di uno stolto, perché egli disprezzerà le tue sagge parole.
10 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone, or encroach on orphans' lands,	10 Non spostare il confine antico, e non invadere il campo degli orfani,
11 for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.	11 perché il loro vendicatore è forte e difenderà la loro causa contro di te.
12 Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to instructive sayings.	12 Apri il tuo cuore alla correzione e il tuo orecchio ai discorsi sapienti.
13 Do not be chary of correcting a child, a stroke of the cane is not likely to be fatal.	13 Non risparmiare al fanciullo la correzione, perché se lo percuoti con il bastone non morirà;
14 Give him a stroke of the cane, you wil save his soul from Sheol.	14 anzi, se lo percuoti con il bastone, lo salverai dal regno dei morti.
15 My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,	15 Figlio mio, se il tuo cuore sarà saggio, anche il mio sarà colmo di gioia.
16 and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.	16 Esulterò dentro di me, quando le tue labbra diranno parole rette.
17 Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;	17 Non invidiare in cuor tuo i peccatori, ma resta sempre nel timore del Signore,
18 for there is a future, and your hope wil not come to nothing.	18 perché così avrai un avvenire e la tua speranza non sarà stroncata.
19 Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.	19 Ascolta, figlio mio, e sii saggio e indirizza il tuo cuore sulla via retta.
20 Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;	20 Non essere fra quelli che s’inebriano di vino né fra coloro che sono ingordi di carne,
21 for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.	21 perché l’ubriacone e l’ingordo impoveriranno e di stracci li rivestirà la sonnolenza.
22 Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.	22 Ascolta tuo padre che ti ha generato, non disprezzare tua madre quando è vecchia.
23 Purchase truth -- never sel it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.	23 Acquista la verità e non rivenderla, la sapienza, l’educazione e la prudenza.
24 The father of the upright wil rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child wil have joy of it.	24 Il padre del giusto gioirà pienamente, e chi ha generato un saggio se ne compiacerà.
25 Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.	25 Gioiscano tuo padre e tua madre e si rallegri colei che ti ha generato.
26 My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:	26 Fa’ bene attenzione a me, figlio mio, e piacciano ai tuoi occhi le mie vie:
27 a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow wel , the woman who belongs to another.	27 una fossa profonda è la prostituta, e un pozzo stretto la straniera.
28 Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.	28 Ella si apposta come un ladro e fra gli uomini fa crescere il numero dei traditori.
29 For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struckat random, for whom the clouded eye?	29 Per chi i guai? Per chi i lamenti? Per chi i litigi? Per chi i gemiti? A chi le percosse per futili motivi? A chi gli occhi torbidi?
30 For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.	30 Per quelli che si perdono dietro al vino, per quelli che assaporano bevande inebrianti.
31 Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!	31 Non guardare il vino come rosseggia, come scintilla nella coppa e come scorre morbidamente;
32 In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.	32 finirà per morderti come un serpente e pungerti come una vipera.
33 Your eyes wil see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.	33 Allora i tuoi occhi vedranno cose strane e la tua mente dirà cose sconnesse.
34 You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.	34 Ti parrà di giacere in alto mare o di giacere in cima all’albero maestro.
35 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shal I wake up? . . I'lask for more of it!'	35 «Mi hanno picchiato, ma non sento male. Mi hanno bastonato, ma non me ne sono accorto. Quando mi sveglierò? Ne chiederò dell’altro!».
