Proverbs 23

1 If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;	1 - Quando sederai commensale di qualche signore, sta' attento a ciò che ti vien posto dinanzi.
2 if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.	2 E mettiti il coltello in gola, se pure hai la padronanza dei tuoi sentimenti.
3 Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.	3 Non essere ingordo delle sue vivande, esse sono cibo traditore.
4 Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.	4 Non t'affannare per ammassar ricchezze, e moderati nelle tue speculazioni.
5 Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off tothe sky.	5 Non alzar gli sguardi alle ricchezze che non puoi avere, perchè metteranno le ali come le aquile e voleranno per aria.
6 Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.	6 Non andar a mensa dall'uomo invidioso, e non agognare le sue vivande;
7 For what he is real y thinking about is himself: 'Eat and drink,' he tells you, but his heart is not with you.	7 poichè esso a guisa di un indovino e d'un maliardo, calcola di scoprir terreno.«Mangia e bevi» ti dirà, ma l'animo suo non è con te.
8 You wil spit out whatever you have eaten and find your compliments wasted.	8 I bocconi che mangiasti li avrai a rivomitare e avrai sprecato i tuoi detti piacevoli.
9 Do not waste words on a fool, who wil not appreciate the shrewdness of your remarks.	9 Alle orecchie dello stolto, non parlare, perchè sprezzerà il senno delle tue parole.
10 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone, or encroach on orphans' lands,	10 Non toccare i termini del pupillo e non penetrare nel podere dell'orfano.
11 for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.	11 Il loro tutore è uno valente egli difenderà contro di te la loro causa.
12 Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to instructive sayings.	12 Applica il tuo cuore alla dottrina e le tue orecchie alle parole della scienza.
13 Do not be chary of correcting a child, a stroke of the cane is not likely to be fatal.	13 Non sottrarre il fanciullo alla disciplina, se anche l'avrai percosso con la verga, non morrà.
14 Give him a stroke of the cane, you wil save his soul from Sheol.	14 Tu lo picchierai con la verga, ma lo scamperai dall'inferno.
15 My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,	15 Figliuol mio, se l'animo tuo sarà saggio, teco si rallegrerà il cuore altresì a me,
16 and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.	16 e le mie viscere esulterannoalle parole delle tue labbra piene di rettitudine.
17 Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;	17 Il cuor tuo non invidi la sorte dei peccatori; sia anzi nel timor di Dio tutto il dì,
18 for there is a future, and your hope wil not come to nothing.	18 poichè avrai una speranza nell'avvenire e la tua aspettazione non sarà delusa.
19 Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.	19 Ascolta, figliuol mio, e sii saggio, e istrada diritto il cuor tuo.
20 Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;	20 Non frequentare i conviti dei bevitorinè le gozzoviglie dei mangiatori di carne a scialo;
21 for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.	21 perchè quei che spendono il tempo e lo scotto a bere, immiseriscono, e la sonnolenza vestirà di cenci.
22 Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.	22 Ascolta tuo padre ch'è quegli che t'ha generato e non sprezzare tua madre, perchè vecchia.
23 Purchase truth -- never sel it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.	23 Acquista la verità e non venderela saggezza, la dottrina e l'intelligenza.
24 The father of the upright wil rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child wil have joy of it.	24 Immensamente esulta il padre del giusto, chi generò un saggio, avrà letizia in esso.
25 Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.	25 Possa gioire e tuo padre e tua madre, anzi tripudiare colei ch'è tua genitrice.
26 My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:	26 O figlio mio, il cuor tuo dallo a me ed i tuoi occhi stian fissi nelle mie vie,
27 a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow wel , the woman who belongs to another.	27 perchè una fossa profonda è la meretrice e la donna d'altri un angusto pozzo,
28 Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.	28 si pone in agguato sulla via come un ladro e quelli che vede incauti, li uccide.
29 For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struckat random, for whom the clouded eye?	29 Per chi i guai? pel padre di chi gli «ahi»? per chi le baruffe? per chi gli stramazzoni? per chi le percosse per un nonnulla? per chi l'appannamento degli occhi?
30 For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.	30 Non sono forse per quelli che s'indugiano tra il vino, che sono assidui a tracannare bicchieri?
31 Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!	31 Non rimirare il vino quando biondo spuma, quando nel vetro il suo colore sfavilla. S'insinua soavemente,
32 In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.	32 ma infine morderà come una serpe e diffonderà il suo veleno come una vipera.
33 Your eyes wil see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.	33 Gli occhi tuoi vedranno cose strane, e il tuo cuore parlerà alla rovescia;
34 You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.	34 e sarai come uno che dorme in alto mare e come un pilota assopito che ha perduto il timone.
35 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shal I wake up? . . I'lask for more of it!'	35 Dirai: «Mi hanno bastonato, ma non sentii dolore, mi hanno strascinato ma e io non me ne accòrsi: quando mi sveglierò per cercar del vino ancora?».
