NEW JERUSALEMLXX
Better the poor living an honest life than the adept at double-talk who is a fool.1 -
Where knowledge is wanting, zeal is not good; whoever goes too quickly stumbles.2 -
Folly leads conduct astray, yet it is against Yahweh that the heart rages.3 αφροσυνη ανδρος λυμαινεται τας οδους αυτου τον δε θεον αιτιαται τη καρδια αυτου
Wealth multiplies friends, but the one friend the poor has is taken away.4 πλουτος προστιθησιν φιλους πολλους ο δε πτωχος και απο του υπαρχοντος φιλου λειπεται
The false witness wil not go unpunished, no one who utters lies wil go free.5 μαρτυς ψευδης ουκ ατιμωρητος εσται ο δε εγκαλων αδικως ου διαφευξεται
The nobleman has many to court his favour, to a giver of gifts, everyone is friend.6 πολλοι θεραπευουσιν προσωπα βασιλεων πας δε ο κακος γινεται ονειδος ανδρι
The poor man's brothers hate him, every one; his friends -- how much the more do these desert him!He goes in search of words, but there are none to be had.7 πας ος αδελφον πτωχον μισει και φιλιας μακραν εσται εννοια αγαθη τοις ειδοσιν αυτην εγγιει ανηρ δε φρονιμος ευρησει αυτην ο πολλα κακοποιων τελεσιουργει κακιαν ος δε ερεθιζει λογους ου σωθησεται
Whoever acquires sense wins profit from it, whoever treasures understanding finds happiness.8 ο κτωμενος φρονησιν αγαπα εαυτον ος δε φυλασσει φρονησιν ευρησει αγαθα
The false witness wil not go unpunished, whoever utters lies wil be destroyed.9 μαρτυς ψευδης ουκ ατιμωρητος εσται ος δ' αν εκκαυση κακιαν απολειται υπ' αυτης
It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury, stil less for a slave to govern princes.10 ου συμφερει αφρονι τρυφη και εαν οικετης αρξηται μεθ' υβρεως δυναστευειν
Good sense makes for self-control, and for pride in overlooking an offence.11 ελεημων ανηρ μακροθυμει το δε καυχημα αυτου επερχεται παρανομοις
Like the roaring of a lion, the anger of a king, but like dew on the grass his favour.12 βασιλεως απειλη ομοια βρυγμω λεοντος ωσπερ δε δροσος επι χορτω ουτως το ιλαρον αυτου
A foolish child is a disaster for the father, the bickerings of a wife are like an ever-dripping gutter.13 αισχυνη πατρι υιος αφρων και ουχ αγναι ευχαι απο μισθωματος εταιρας
From fathers comes inheritance of house and wealth, from Yahweh a wife who is discreet.14 οικον και υπαρξιν μεριζουσιν πατερες παισιν παρα δε θεου αρμοζεται γυνη ανδρι
Idleness lul s to sleep, the feckless soul wil go hungry.15 δειλια κατεχει ανδρογυναιον ψυχη δε αεργου πεινασει
Keeping the commandment is self-preservation, but whoever despises these ways wil die.16 ος φυλασσει εντολην τηρει την εαυτου ψυχην ο δε καταφρονων των εαυτου οδων απολειται
Whoever is kind to the poor is lending to Yahweh who wil repay him the kindness done.17 δανιζει θεω ο ελεων πτωχον κατα δε το δομα αυτου ανταποδωσει αυτω
While there is hope for him, chastise your child, but do not get so angry as to kill him.18 παιδευε υιον σου ουτως γαρ εσται ευελπις εις δε υβριν μη επαιρου τη ψυχη σου
The violent lays himself open to a penalty; spare him, and you aggravate his crime.19 κακοφρων ανηρ πολλα ζημιωθησεται εαν δε λοιμευηται και την ψυχην αυτου προσθησει
Listen to advice, accept correction, to be the wiser in the time to come.20 ακουε υιε παιδειαν πατρος σου ινα σοφος γενη επ' εσχατων σου
Many are the plans in the human heart, but the purpose of Yahweh -- that stands firm.21 πολλοι λογισμοι εν καρδια ανδρος η δε βουλη του κυριου εις τον αιωνα μενει
Faithful love is what people look for in a person; they prefer the poor to a liar.22 καρπος ανδρι ελεημοσυνη κρεισσων δε πτωχος δικαιος η πλουσιος ψευστης
The fear of Yahweh leads to life, it brings food and shelter, without fear of evil.23 φοβος κυριου εις ζωην ανδρι ο δε αφοβος αυλισθησεται εν τοποις ου ουκ επισκοπειται γνωσις
Into the dish the idler dips his hand, but bring it back to his mouth he cannot.24 ο εγκρυπτων εις τον κολπον αυτου χειρας αδικως ουδε τω στοματι ου μη προσαγαγη αυτας
Strike a cynic, and simpletons wil be more wary; reprove the intel igent and he wil understand yourmeaning.25 λοιμου μαστιγουμενου αφρων πανουργοτερος γινεται εαν δε ελεγχης ανδρα φρονιμον νοησει αισθησιν
He who il -treats his father and drives out his mother is a child both worthless and depraved.26 ο ατιμαζων πατερα και απωθουμενος μητερα αυτου καταισχυνθησεται και επονειδιστος εσται
Give up listening to instruction, my child, if you mean to stray from words of knowledge.27 υιος απολειπομενος φυλαξαι παιδειαν πατρος μελετησει ρησεις κακας
A perjured witness holds the law in scorn; the mouth of the wicked feasts on evil-doing.28 ο εγγυωμενος παιδα αφρονα καθυβριζει δικαιωμα στομα δε ασεβων καταπιεται κρισεις
Punishments were made for mockers, and beating for the backs of fools.29 ετοιμαζονται ακολαστοις μαστιγες και τιμωριαι ωμοις αφρονων
