Gorgias took with him five thousand foot and a thousand picked cavalry, and the force moved off bynight1 Gorgia prese con sé cinquemila fanti e mille cavalieri scelti e, di notte, si mise in marcia
with the object of attacking the Jewish position and dealing them an unexpected blow; the men fromthe Citadel were there to guide him.2 per piombare nell’accampamento dei Giudei e assalirli all’improvviso. Gli facevano da guida gli abitanti dell’Acra.
Judas got wind of it and himself moved off with his fighters to strike at the royal army at Emmaus,3 Giuda, appena lo seppe, si mosse con i prodi per assalire le forze del re, che si trovavano a Emmaus,
while its fighting troops were stil dispersed outside the camp.4 mentre erano ancora fuori dell’accampamento.
Hence, when Gorgias reached Judas' camp, he found no one and began looking for the Jews in themountains. 'For', he said, 'we have got them on the run.'5 Gorgia raggiunse di notte l’accampamento di Giuda, ma non vi trovò nessuno. Perciò li cercò sui monti, perché pensava: «Costoro fuggono innanzi a noi».
First light found Judas in the plain with three thousand men, although these lacked the armour andswords they would have wished.6 Allo spuntar del giorno, apparve Giuda nella pianura con tremila uomini che, però, non avevano coperture né spade nel numero desiderato.
They could now see the gentile encampment with its strong fortifications and cavalry surrounding it,clearly people who understood warfare.7 Come videro l’accampamento dei Gentili, ben difeso e circondato tutto intorno dalla cavalleria — si trattava di guerrieri esperti —
Judas said to his men, 'Do not be afraid of their numbers, and do not flinch at their attack.8 Giuda parlò agli uomini che erano con lui: «Non temete il loro numero e non paventate il loro impeto.
Remember how our ancestors were delivered at the Red Sea when Pharaoh was pursuing them inforce.9 Ricordatevi come si salvarono i nostri padri nel Mare Rosso, quando il Faraone li inseguiva con un esercito.
And now let us cal on Heaven: if he cares for us, he wil remember his covenant with our ancestorsand will destroy this army confronting us today;10 Ora innalziamo le nostre grida al Cielo con la speranza che si ricordi in nostro favore dell’alleanza con i nostri padri e schiacci questo esercito innanzi ai nostri occhi.
then all the nations wil know for certain that there is One who ransoms and saves Israel.'11 Così tutti i Gentili sapranno che c’è chi riscatta e salva Israele».
The foreigners looked up and, seeing the Jews advancing against them,12 Quando, alzati gli occhi, gli stranieri videro quelli che venivano loro incontro,
came out of the camp to join battle. Judas' men sounded the trumpet13 uscirono dall’accampamento per attaccar battaglia. Quelli di Giuda allora suonarono le trombe.
and engaged them. The gentiles were defeated and fled towards the plain14 Si venne alle mani. I Gentili, messi in rotta, fuggirono nella pianura;
and al the stragglers fel by the sword. The pursuit continued as far as Gezer and the plains ofIdumaea, Azotus and Jamnia, and the enemy lost about three thousand men.15 gli ultimi, però, caddero tutti colpiti dalle spade. L’inseguimento fu protratto fino a Gezer e fino alla pianura dell’Idumea, di Azoto e di Jamnia. Caddero circa tremila nemici.
Breaking off the pursuit, Judas returned with his men16 Giuda ritornò con l’esercito dall’inseguimento
and said to the people, 'Never mind the booty, for we have another battle ahead of us.17 e disse al popolo: «Non siate avidi di bottino, perché un’altra battaglia si prepara davanti a noi.
Gorgias and his troops are still near us in the mountains. First stand up to our enemies and fight them, and then you can safely collect the booty.'18 Gorgia infatti con l’esercito è sul monte vicino a noi. Ora state fermi innanzi ai nostri nemici e combatteteli, in seguito raccoglierete tranquillamente il bottino».
The words were hardly out of Judas' mouth, when a detachment came into view, peering down fromthe mountain.19 Mentre Giuda ancora parlava, apparve una schiera di soldati che esploravano il monte.
Observing that their own troops had been routed and that the camp had been fired -- since the smoke, which they could see, attested the fact-20 Essi si accorsero che i loro erano stati messi in fuga e che avevano incendiato l’accampamento; il fumo, infatti, che si vedeva denunciava l’accaduto.
they were panic-stricken at the sight; and when, furthermore, they saw Judas' troops drawn up forbattle on the plain,21 Constatato ciò, furono presi da gran timore; visto, poi, l’esercito di Giuda nella pianura, pronto alla battaglia,
they al fled into Philistine territory.22 fuggirono tutti nel paese dei Filistei.
Judas then turned back to plunder the camp, and a large sum in gold and silver, with violet and sea-purple stuffs, and many other valuables were carried off.23 Allora Giuda ritornò a saccheggiare l’accampamento, dove i soldati presero molto oro e argento, stoffe tinte di porpora viola e rossa e molte altre ricchezze.
On their return, the Jews chanted praises to Heaven, singing, 'He is kind and his love is everlasting!'24 Al ritorno essi lodavano e benedicevano il Cielo, perché è buono e la sua misericordia dura per sempre.
That day had seen a remarkable deliverance in Israel.25 Una grande liberazione si operò quel giorno in Israele.
Those of the foreigners who had escaped came and gave Lysias an account of all that had happened.26 Quanti degli stranieri si erano salvati andarono da Lisia e gli riferirono tutto ciò che era accaduto.
The news shocked and dismayed him, for affairs in Israel had not gone as he intended, and the resultwas quite the opposite to what the king had ordered.27 Questi, dopo averli sentiti, fu sconvolto e si perse d’animo, perché le cose in Israele non erano andate come avrebbe voluto e non era riuscito quanto il re gli aveva prescritto.
The next year he mobilised sixty thousand picked troops and five thousand cavalry with the intentionof finishing off the Jews.28 Perciò l’anno dopo egli raccolse sessantamila uomini scelti e cinquemila cavalieri per combattere i Giudei.
They advanced into Idumaea and made their base at Beth-Zur, where Judas met them with tenthousand men.29 Essi vennero in Idumea e si accamparono a Bet-Zur. Giuda andò loro incontro con diecimila uomini.
When he saw their military strength he offered this prayer, 'Blessed are you, Saviour of Israel, whoshattered the mighty warrior's attack at the hand of your servant David, and delivered the Philistine camp into thehands of Jonathan son of Saul, and his armour-bearer.30 Dopo aver visto la forza dell’esercito nemico, egli pregò: «Benedetto sia tu, o salvatore di Israele, che hai annientato per mezzo del tuo servitore David l’impeto del gigante e hai messo l’accampamento dei Filistei nelle mani di Gionata figlio di Saul e del suo scudiero.
Crush this expedition in the same way at the hands of your people Israel; let their troops and cavalrybring them nothing but shame.31 Fa’ ora cadere quest’esercito nelle mani di Israele tuo popolo; essi restino confusi con le loro forze e con la loro cavalleria.
Sow panic in their ranks, confound the confidence they put in their numbers and send them reeling indefeat.32 Infondi loro spavento e dissipa la confidenza che hanno riposto nella loro forza; siano travolti nella loro sconfitta.
Overthrow them by the sword of those who love you, and all who acknowledge your name wil singyour praises.'33 Abbattili con la spada di coloro che ti amano. Così ti loderanno con inni quanti conoscono il tuo nome».
The two forces engaged, and five thousand men of Lysias' troops fel in hand-to-hand fighting.34 Venuti a battaglia, caddero nel campo di Lisia circa cinquemila uomini, che morirono innanzi agli occhi dei Giudei.
Seeing the rout of his army and the courage of Judas' troops and their readiness to live or die nobly,Lysias withdrew to Antioch, where he recruited mercenaries for a further invasion of Judaea in even greaterstrength.35 Lisia, vedendo la fuga del suo esercito e il coraggio di Giuda e constatando .come fossero decisi di vivere o di morire da eroi, ritornò verso Antiochia. Qui egli assoldò mercenari stranieri per venire di nuovo con forze maggiori in Giudea.
Judas and his brothers then said, 'Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go up to purifythe sanctuary and dedicate it.'36 Allora Giuda e i suoi fratelli dissero: “Ecco, i nostri nemici sono stati sconfitti; andiamo a purificare, e riconsacrare il santuario».
So they marshal ed the whole army, and went up to Mount Zion.37 Si radunò, perciò, tutto l’esercito e andarono sul monte Sion.
There they found the sanctuary deserted, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt down, and vegetationgrowing in the courts as it might in a wood or on some mountain, while the storerooms were in ruins.38 Quando videro il santuario deserto, l’altare profanato, le porte bruciate, l’erba cresciuta nei cortili come in un boscoo su un colle e le camere rovinate,
They tore their garments and mourned bitterly, putting dust on their heads.39 si stracciarono le vesti, elevarono un gran lamento e sì cosparsero il capo di cenere.
They prostrated themselves on the ground, and when the trumpets gave the signal they cried aloud toHeaven.40 Si prostrarono con la faccia a terra; diedero il segnale con le trombe e levarono grida verso il Cielo.
Judas then ordered his men to keep the Citadel garrison engaged until he had purified the sanctuary.41 Giuda comandò ad alcuni uomini di combattere quelli dell’Acra, mentre egli purificava il santuario.
Next, he selected priests who were blameless and zealous for the Law42 Egli scelse sacerdoti senza macchia, osservanti della legge.
to purify the sanctuary and remove the stones of the 'Pollution' to some unclean place.43 Questi purificarono il santuario e gettarono le pietre della contaminazione in luogo immondo.
They discussed what should be done about the altar of burnt offering which had been profaned,44 Consigliatisi sul da fare circa l’altare degli olocausti profanato,
and very properly decided to pul it down, rather than later be embarrassed about it since it had beendefiled by the gentiles. They therefore demolished it45 venne loro la felice idea di demolirlo affinché non fosse loro causa di disonore, poiché i Gentili lo avevano contaminato. Demolirono l’altare
and deposited the stones in a suitable place on the hil of the Dwel ing to await the appearance of aprophet who should give a ruling about them.46 e riposero, le pietre sul monte del tempio, in un luogo conveniente finché venisse un profeta a pronunciarsi intorno a esse.
They took unhewn stones, as the Law prescribed, and built a new altar on the lines of the old one.47 Quindi presero pietre non lavorate come prescrive la legge e costruirono un nuovo altare, come quello di prima;
They restored the Holy Place and the interior of the Dwel ing, and purified the courts.48 ripararono il santuario e purificarono le costruzioni interne del tempio e consacrarono i cortili.
They made new sacred vessels, and brought the lamp-stand, the altar of incense, and the table intothe Temple.49 Rifecero le suppellettili sacre, ricollocarono nel tempio il candelabro e l’altare degli olocausti e degli incensi e la mensa.
They burned incense on the altar and lit the lamps on the lamp-stand, and these shone inside theTemple.50 Bruciarono incenso sull’altare e accesero le lampade del candelabro e queste risplendettero nel santuario.
They placed the loaves on the table and hung the curtains and completed al the tasks they hadundertaken.51 Collocarono i pani sulla mensa, distesero le cortine e condussero a termine tutti i lavori intrapresi.
On the twenty-fifth of the ninth month, Chislev, in the year 148 they rose at dawn52 Essi si radunarono la mattina del 25 del nono mese, detto Casleu, dell’anno 148,
and offered a lawful sacrifice on the new altar of burnt offering which they had made.53 e offrirono un sacrificio secondo la legge, sul nuovo re , degli olocausti che avevano costruito,
The altar was dedicated, to the sound of hymns, zithers, lyres and cymbals, at the same time of yearand on the same day on which the gentiles had original y profaned it.54 Esattamente nello stesso mese e nello stesso giorno, nel quale era stato profanato dai Gentili, fu riconsacrato con canti, suon di cetre, di arpe e di cembali.
The whole people fel prostrate in adoration and then praised Heaven who had granted them success.55 Tutto il popolo si prostrò in adorazione; elevarono benedizioni - Verso il Cielo a colui che si era mostrato propizio al loro successo,
For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar, joyful y offering burnt offerings, communionand thanksgiving sacrifices.56 e offrirono con ubiola olocausti e sacrifici pacifici e di lode.
They ornamented the front of the Temple with crowns and bosses of gold, renovated the gates andstorerooms, providing the latter with doors.57 Ornarono la facciata del tempio con corone d’oro e con piccoli scudi; restaurarono le porte e le celle e le provvidero di usci;
There was no end to the rejoicing among the people, since the disgrace inflicted by the gentiles hadbeen effaced.58 Vi fu un’allegria grandissima fra il popolo, perché era stata cancellata l’onta dei Gentili.
Judas, with his brothers and the whole assembly of Israel, made it a law that the days of thededication of the altar should be celebrated yearly at the proper season, for eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth of the month of Chislev, with rejoicing and gladness.59 Giuda, i suoi fratelli e tutta l’assemblea di Israele stabilirono di celebrare i giorni della dedicazione dell’altare, in tempi opportuni, ogni anno, per otto giorni dal 25 del mese Casleu, con letizia e gioia.
They then proceeded to build high wal s with strong towers round Mount Zion, to prevent the gentilesfrom coming and riding roughshod over it as in the past.60 In quel tempo costruirono intorno al monte Sion alte mura e forti torri affinché non venissero di nuovo i Gentili a calpestare il santuario, come avevano fatto prima.
Judas stationed a garrison there to guard it; he also fortified Beth-Zur, so that the people would havea fortress confronting Idumaea.61 Giuda vi stabilì un presidio per custodirlo fortificò anche Bet-Zur affinché il popolo area una difesa contro l’Idumea.
