1 Gorgias took with him five thousand foot and a thousand picked cavalry, and the force moved off bynight	1 Gorgias prit avec lui 5 000 fantassins et un millier des meilleurs cavaliers. Il partit de nuit
2 with the object of attacking the Jewish position and dealing them an unexpected blow; the men fromthe Citadel were there to guide him.	2 pour pénétrer dans le camp des Juifs et les frapper par surprise: des hommes de la citadelle lui servaient de guides.
3 Judas got wind of it and himself moved off with his fighters to strike at the royal army at Emmaus,	3 Judas en fut averti; il sortit alors avec ses hommes pour attaquer l’armée du roi qui était à Emmaüs,
4 while its fighting troops were stil dispersed outside the camp.	4 profitant de ce que les troupes s’étaient dispersées loin du camp.
5 Hence, when Gorgias reached Judas' camp, he found no one and began looking for the Jews in themountains. 'For', he said, 'we have got them on the run.'	5 Gorgias arriva de nuit au camp de Judas; il n’y trouva personne et se mit à chercher les Juifs dans les montagnes car il se disait: “Ils ont pris la fuite devant nous.”
6 First light found Judas in the plain with three thousand men, although these lacked the armour andswords they would have wished.	6 Mais au petit matin Judas parut dans la plaine avec 3 000 hommes. Ils n’avaient, de fait, ni les armures, ni les épées qu’ils auraient désirées,
7 They could now see the gentile encampment with its strong fortifications and cavalry surrounding it,clearly people who understood warfare.	7 et ils voyaient devant eux le camp des païens, puissant et bien fortifié, avec de la cavalerie tout autour; c’étaient des gens qui savaient se battre.
8 Judas said to his men, 'Do not be afraid of their numbers, and do not flinch at their attack.	8 Judas dit alors à ses hommes: “N’ayez pas peur de cette foule, ne redoutez pas leur attaque.
9 Remember how our ancestors were delivered at the Red Sea when Pharaoh was pursuing them inforce.	9 Rappelez-vous que nos pères furent délivrés à la mer Rouge lorsque le Pharaon les poursuivait avec son armée.
10 And now let us cal on Heaven: if he cares for us, he wil remember his covenant with our ancestorsand will destroy this army confronting us today;	10 Crions donc vers le Ciel! S’il veut de nous, il se souviendra de son Alliance avec nos pères et il écrasera aujourd’hui cette armée que vous voyez devant nous.
11 then all the nations wil know for certain that there is One who ransoms and saves Israel.'	11 Alors toutes les nations sauront qu’il y a quelqu’un pour racheter et sauver Israël.”
12 The foreigners looked up and, seeing the Jews advancing against them,	12 En levant les yeux, les étrangers virent les Juifs qui venaient droit sur eux;
13 came out of the camp to join battle. Judas' men sounded the trumpet	13 ils sortirent de leur camp pour combattre. Les soldats de Judas sonnèrent de la trompette
14 and engaged them. The gentiles were defeated and fled towards the plain	14 et engagèrent la bataille. Les païens furent écrasés et prirent la fuite à travers la plaine,
15 and al the stragglers fel by the sword. The pursuit continued as far as Gezer and the plains ofIdumaea, Azotus and Jamnia, and the enemy lost about three thousand men.	15 mais tous les derniers tombèrent sous l’épée. On les poursuivit jusqu’à Gazer, jusqu’aux plaines d’Idumée, d’Azotos et de Jamnia: il y eut près de 3 000 morts.
16 Breaking off the pursuit, Judas returned with his men	16 Revenu de la poursuite avec son armée,
17 and said to the people, 'Never mind the booty, for we have another battle ahead of us.	17 Judas dit au peuple: “Ce n’est pas le moment de penser au pillage, car un autre combat vous attend:
18 Gorgias and his troops are still near us in the mountains. First stand up to our enemies and fight them,and then you can safely collect the booty.'	18 Gorgias et ses hommes sont dans la montagne tout près de nous, il faut faire face à nos ennemis et les combattre; après cela, vous pourrez ramasser le butin sans crainte.”
19 The words were hardly out of Judas' mouth, when a detachment came into view, peering down fromthe mountain.	19 Judas venait à peine de prononcer ces paroles, lorsqu’on aperçut des troupes ennemies qui observaient du haut de la montagne.
20 Observing that their own troops had been routed and that the camp had been fired -- since the smoke,which they could see, attested the fact-	20 Elles virent que les leurs avaient pris la fuite et que les flammes avaient dévoré leur camp: il suffisait de voir la fumée pour comprendre.
21 they were panic-stricken at the sight; and when, furthermore, they saw Judas' troops drawn up forbattle on the plain,	21 Ce spectacle les remplit de crainte; mais quand ils virent dans la plaine l’armée de Judas prête à combattre,
22 they al fled into Philistine territory.	22 ils prirent tous la fuite vers le pays des Philistins.
23 Judas then turned back to plunder the camp, and a large sum in gold and silver, with violet and sea-purple stuffs, and many other valuables were carried off.	23 Alors Judas revint pour piller le camp; on ramassa quantité de pièces d’or et d’argent, des étoffes de pourpre violette et de pourpre rouge et beaucoup d’autres richesses.
24 On their return, the Jews chanted praises to Heaven, singing, 'He is kind and his love is everlasting!'	24 À leur retour, les Juifs louaient et bénissaient le Ciel en chantant: “Il est bon et son amour est éternel!”
25 That day had seen a remarkable deliverance in Israel.	25 Ce jour-là, Israël connut une grande délivrance.
26 Those of the foreigners who had escaped came and gave Lysias an account of all that had happened.	26 Les étrangers qui avaient pu s’enfuir rapportèrent à Lysias tout ce qui s’était passé.
27 The news shocked and dismayed him, for affairs in Israel had not gone as he intended, and the resultwas quite the opposite to what the king had ordered.	27 Cette nouvelle le bouleversa et lui fit perdre courage; les affaires avec Israël ne s’étaient pas déroulées comme il l’aurait voulu, et le résultat était tout le contraire de ce que le roi avait ordonné.
28 The next year he mobilised sixty thousand picked troops and five thousand cavalry with the intentionof finishing off the Jews.	28 L’année suivante, Lysias réunit 60 000 hommes parmi les meilleurs et 5 000 cavaliers, afin de venir à bout des Juifs.
29 They advanced into Idumaea and made their base at Beth-Zur, where Judas met them with tenthousand men.	29 Ils arrivèrent en Idumée et campèrent à Beth-Sour; Judas vint à leur rencontre avec 10 000 hommes.
30 When he saw their military strength he offered this prayer, 'Blessed are you, Saviour of Israel, whoshattered the mighty warrior's attack at the hand of your servant David, and delivered the Philistine camp into thehands of Jonathan son of Saul, and his armour-bearer.	30 Quand il vit cette puissante armée, il fit cette prière: “Tu es béni, toi qui sauves Israël! Tu as brisé l’attaque du puissant guerrier par la main de ton serviteur David, tu as livré le camp des Philistins entre les mains de Jonathan, fils de Saül, et de son compagnon:
31 Crush this expedition in the same way at the hands of your people Israel; let their troops and cavalrybring them nothing but shame.	31 livre de même cette armée entre les mains de ton peuple Israël! Qu’ils soient totalement déçus de leurs troupes et de leur cavalerie!
32 Sow panic in their ranks, confound the confidence they put in their numbers and send them reeling indefeat.	32 Jette la panique dans leurs rangs, fais fondre la confiance qu’ils mettent dans leurs forces et que leur défaite les décourage.
33 Overthrow them by the sword of those who love you, and all who acknowledge your name wil singyour praises.'	33 Fais-les tomber sous l’épée de ceux qui t’aiment, et que ceux qui connaissent ton Nom te louent par leurs cantiques.”
34 The two forces engaged, and five thousand men of Lysias' troops fel in hand-to-hand fighting.	34 Ils se lancèrent les uns contre les autres et 5 000 hommes de l’armée de Lysias tombèrent au cours du corps à corps.
35 Seeing the rout of his army and the courage of Judas' troops and their readiness to live or die nobly,Lysias withdrew to Antioch, where he recruited mercenaries for a further invasion of Judaea in even greaterstrength.	35 Voyant l’échec de son armée et le courage des soldats de Judas, décidés à vivre ou à mourir courageusement, Lysias repartit vers Antioche où il recruta des étrangers pour revenir en Judée avec une troupe encore plus nombreuse.
36 Judas and his brothers then said, 'Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go up to purifythe sanctuary and dedicate it.'	36 Judas et ses frères dirent alors: “Nos ennemis sont maintenant abattus, purifions le Sanctuaire et célébrons la Dédicace.”
37 So they marshal ed the whole army, and went up to Mount Zion.	37 Toute l’armée se rassembla donc pour monter au mont Sion.
38 There they found the sanctuary deserted, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt down, and vegetationgrowing in the courts as it might in a wood or on some mountain, while the storerooms were in ruins.	38 Là ils virent que le Lieu Saint était à l’abandon, l’autel profané, les portes brûlées; de petits arbres poussaient dans les cours comme dans un bois ou sur une montagne et les chambres étaient détruites.
39 They tore their garments and mourned bitterly, putting dust on their heads.	39 Alors ils déchirèrent leurs vêtements et firent un grand deuil en répandant de la cendre sur leur tête.
40 They prostrated themselves on the ground, and when the trumpets gave the signal they cried aloud toHeaven.	40 Ils se prosternèrent la face contre terre et au son des trompettes ils poussèrent des cris vers le Ciel.
41 Judas then ordered his men to keep the Citadel garrison engaged until he had purified the sanctuary.	41 Pendant qu’ils nettoyaient le Sanctuaire, Judas désigna des hommes pour combattre ceux qui restaient dans la citadelle.
42 Next, he selected priests who were blameless and zealous for the Law	42 Il choisit ensuite des prêtres purs et pleins de zèle pour la Loi;
43 to purify the sanctuary and remove the stones of the 'Pollution' to some unclean place.	43 ils purifièrent le Sanctuaire et jetèrent dans un lieu impur les pierres de l’autel païen.
44 They discussed what should be done about the altar of burnt offering which had been profaned,	44 Ils virent ensemble ce que l’on devait faire pour l’autel des holocaustes qui avait été profané,
45 and very properly decided to pul it down, rather than later be embarrassed about it since it had beendefiled by the gentiles. They therefore demolished it	45 ils eurent la bonne idée de le supprimer car c’était pour eux un motif d’humiliation, du fait que les païens l’avaient souillé. Ils le démolirent donc
46 and deposited the stones in a suitable place on the hil of the Dwel ing to await the appearance of aprophet who should give a ruling about them.	46 et déposèrent les pierres de cet autel sur la montagne de la Demeure dans un endroit convenable. Ils attendaient qu’un prophète vienne pour se prononcer à ce sujet.
47 They took unhewn stones, as the Law prescribed, and built a new altar on the lines of the old one.	47 Ils prirent des pierres qui n’avaient pas été taillées, comme le demandait la Loi, et ils firent un nouvel autel sur le modèle du précédent.
48 They restored the Holy Place and the interior of the Dwel ing, and purified the courts.	48 Ils réparèrent le sanctuaire et l’intérieur de la Demeure, et ils purifièrent les cours.
49 They made new sacred vessels, and brought the lamp-stand, the altar of incense, and the table intothe Temple.	49 Après avoir fait de nouveaux ustensiles sacrés, ils placèrent dans le Temple les chandeliers, l’autel des parfums et la table pour les pains.
50 They burned incense on the altar and lit the lamps on the lamp-stand, and these shone inside theTemple.	50 Ils firent brûler de l’encens sur l’autel, ils allumèrent les lampes du chandelier qui brillèrent à l’intérieur du Temple.
51 They placed the loaves on the table and hung the curtains and completed al the tasks they hadundertaken.	51 Ils déposèrent sur la table les pains, ils suspendirent les rideaux et achevèrent tout ce qu’ils avaient entrepris.
52 On the twenty-fifth of the ninth month, Chislev, in the year 148 they rose at dawn	52 Le 25 du neuvième mois, qu’on appelle le mois de Kisleu, en l’an 148, ils se levèrent dès l’aube,
53 and offered a lawful sacrifice on the new altar of burnt offering which they had made.	53 et offrirent un sacrifice comme le demande la Loi sur le nouvel autel des holocaustes qu’ils avaient construit.
54 The altar was dedicated, to the sound of hymns, zithers, lyres and cymbals, at the same time of yearand on the same day on which the gentiles had original y profaned it.	54 On inaugura l’autel au son des cantiques, des cithares, des harpes et des cymbales, à la même époque et le même jour où les païens l’avaient profané.
55 The whole people fel prostrate in adoration and then praised Heaven who had granted them success.	55 Le peuple tout entier se prosterna pour adorer, il fit monter sa louange vers le ciel qui avait mené à bien toutes choses.
56 For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar, joyful y offering burnt offerings, communionand thanksgiving sacrifices.	56 Durant huit jours on célébra la dédicace de l’autel, on offrit dans la joie des holocaustes, ainsi qu’un sacrifice de communion et d’actions de grâces.
57 They ornamented the front of the Temple with crowns and bosses of gold, renovated the gates andstorerooms, providing the latter with doors.	57 On décora la façade du Temple avec des couronnes d’or et des écussons, on répara les entrées et l’on mit des portes aux chambres.
58 There was no end to the rejoicing among the people, since the disgrace inflicted by the gentiles hadbeen effaced.	58 Le peuple était dans une grande joie et la honte que les païens avaient infligée fut effacée.
59 Judas, with his brothers and the whole assembly of Israel, made it a law that the days of thededication of the altar should be celebrated yearly at the proper season, for eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth of the month of Chislev, with rejoicing and gladness.	59 Avec ses frères et toute l’assemblée d’Israël, Judas décida que les jours de la dédicace de l’autel seraient célébrés chaque année à la même date, pendant huit jours, à partir du 25 du mois de Kisleu, dans la joie et la fête.
60 They then proceeded to build high wal s with strong towers round Mount Zion, to prevent the gentilesfrom coming and riding roughshod over it as in the past.	60 En ces jours-là on entoura le mont Sion de remparts et de tours fortifiées, pour que les païens ne viennent pas comme autrefois profaner ces lieux.
61 Judas stationed a garrison there to guard it; he also fortified Beth-Zur, so that the people would havea fortress confronting Idumaea.	61 Judas y établit une garnison pour le garder, il fortifia aussi Beth-Sour pour que le peuple ait une forteresse face à l’Idumée.
