NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Gorgias took with him five thousand foot and a thousand picked cavalry, and the force moved off bynight	1 Gorgias prit avec lui 5.000 hommes de pied et mille cavaliers d'élite, détachement qui partitde nuit
2 with the object of attacking the Jewish position and dealing them an unexpected blow; the men fromthe Citadel were there to guide him.	2 en vue de faire irruption dans le camp des Juifs et de les frapper à l'improviste. Les gens de laCitadelle lui servaient de guides.
3 Judas got wind of it and himself moved off with his fighters to strike at the royal army at Emmaus,	3 Ce qu'ayant Entendu, Judas lui-même se mit en marche avec ses braves pour battre l'arméeroyale qui était à Emmaüs,
4 while its fighting troops were stil dispersed outside the camp.	4 pendant que ses effectifs se trouvaient encore dispersés en dehors du camp.
5 Hence, when Gorgias reached Judas' camp, he found no one and began looking for the Jews in themountains. 'For', he said, 'we have got them on the run.'	5 Gorgias, de son côté, étant arrivé de nuit au camp de Judas, n'y trouva personne et se mit àchercher les Juifs dans les montagnes car, disait-il: "Ils fuient devant nous."
6 First light found Judas in the plain with three thousand men, although these lacked the armour andswords they would have wished.	6 Au petit jour, Judas parut dans la plaine avec 3.000 hommes. Seulement, ceux-ci n'avaientpas les armures ni les épées qu'ils auraient voulues.
7 They could now see the gentile encampment with its strong fortifications and cavalry surrounding it,clearly people who understood warfare.	7 Ils apercevaient le camp des païens, puissant et fortifié, une cavalerie qui l'environnait, bref,des gens qui avaient l'expérience de la guerre.
8 Judas said to his men, 'Do not be afraid of their numbers, and do not flinch at their attack.	8 Judas dit à ses hommes: "Ne craignez pas cette multitude et ne redoutez pas leur attaque.
9 Remember how our ancestors were delivered at the Red Sea when Pharaoh was pursuing them inforce.	9 Rappelez-vous que nos pères furent sauvés à la mer Rouge quand Pharaon les poursuivaitavec une armée,
10 And now let us cal on Heaven: if he cares for us, he wil remember his covenant with our ancestorsand will destroy this army confronting us today;	10 et maintenant crions vers le Ciel: s'il veut de nous, il se souviendra de son alliance avec nospères et il écrasera aujourd'hui cette armée que voici devant nous.
11 then all the nations wil know for certain that there is One who ransoms and saves Israel.'	11 Alors toutes les nations reconnaîtront qu'il y a quelqu'un qui rachète et sauve Israël."
12 The foreigners looked up and, seeing the Jews advancing against them,	12 Les étrangers levèrent leurs regards et, voyant les Juifs marcher contre eux,
13 came out of the camp to join battle. Judas' men sounded the trumpet	13 ils sortirent du camp pour livrer bataille. Les soldats de Judas sonnèrent de la trompette
14 and engaged them. The gentiles were defeated and fled towards the plain	14 et engagèrent le combat. Les nations furent écrasées, elles s'enfuirent vers la plaine,
15 and al the stragglers fel by the sword. The pursuit continued as far as Gezer and the plains ofIdumaea, Azotus and Jamnia, and the enemy lost about three thousand men.	15 mais tous les ennemis qui se trouvaient à l'arrière tombèrent sous l'épée. La poursuiteatteignit Gazara et les plaines de l'Idumée, d'Azôtos et de Iamnia: 3.000 hommes environ y succombèrent.
16 Breaking off the pursuit, Judas returned with his men	16 Revenu de la chasse qu'il venait de donner à la tête de sa troupe,
17 and said to the people, 'Never mind the booty, for we have another battle ahead of us.	17 Judas dit au peuple: "Ne soyez pas avides de butin, car un autre combat nous menace
18 Gorgias and his troops are still near us in the mountains. First stand up to our enemies and fight them,and then you can safely collect the booty.'	18 Gorgias et son détachement sont dans la montagne tout près de nous. Tenez tête maintenantà nos ennemis et combattez-les; après cela vous ramasserez le butin en toute sécurité."
19 The words were hardly out of Judas' mouth, when a detachment came into view, peering down fromthe mountain.	19 Judas achevait à peine sa phrase qu'une section se fit voir épiant du haut de la montagne.
20 Observing that their own troops had been routed and that the camp had been fired -- since the smoke,which they could see, attested the fact-	20 Elle constata que les leurs avaient dû fuir et que le camp avait été la proie des flammes: lafumée que l'on apercevait le manifestait encore.
21 they were panic-stricken at the sight; and when, furthermore, they saw Judas' troops drawn up forbattle on the plain,	21 Un tel spectacle les remplit de panique. Voyant en outre dans la plaine l'armée de Judasprête au combat,
22 they al fled into Philistine territory.	22 ils s'enfuirent tous au pays des Philistins.
23 Judas then turned back to plunder the camp, and a large sum in gold and silver, with violet and sea-purple stuffs, and many other valuables were carried off.	23 Judas revint alors pour le pillage du camp. 24 On their return, the Jews chanted praises to Heaven, singing, 'He is kind and his love is everlasting!'	24 Les Juifs, à leur retour, louaient et bénissaient le Ciel en disant: "Il est bon et son amour estéternel!"
25 That day had seen a remarkable deliverance in Israel.	25 Une insigne délivrance s'est opérée ce jour-là en Israël.
26 Those of the foreigners who had escaped came and gave Lysias an account of all that had happened.	26 Ceux des étrangers qui avaient échappé vinrent annoncer à Lysias tout ce qui était arrivé.
27 The news shocked and dismayed him, for affairs in Israel had not gone as he intended, and the resultwas quite the opposite to what the king had ordered.	27 Cette nouvelle le bouleversa et lui fit perdre courage, car les affaires avec Israël n'avaientpas été comme il aurait voulu et le résultat était le contraire de ce qu'avait ordonné le roi.
28 The next year he mobilised sixty thousand picked troops and five thousand cavalry with the intentionof finishing off the Jews.	28 L'année suivante, pourtant, Lysias rassembla 60.000 hommes d'élite et 5.000 cavaliers afinde venir à bout des Juifs.
29 They advanced into Idumaea and made their base at Beth-Zur, where Judas met them with tenthousand men.	29 Ils vinrent en Idumée et campèrent à Bethsour. Judas se porta à leur rencontre avec 10.000hommes.
30 When he saw their military strength he offered this prayer, 'Blessed are you, Saviour of Israel, whoshattered the mighty warrior's attack at the hand of your servant David, and delivered the Philistine camp into thehands of Jonathan son of Saul, and his armour-bearer.	30 Quand il vit cette armée puissante, il pria en ces termes: "Tu es béni, sauveur d'Israël, toi quias brisé l'attaque du puissant guerrier par la main de ton serviteur David et qui as livré le camp des Philistins auxmains de Jonathan, fils de Saül, et de son écuyer.
31 Crush this expedition in the same way at the hands of your people Israel; let their troops and cavalrybring them nothing but shame.	31 Enferme de la même façon cette armée entre les mains d'Israël, ton peuple; qu'ils ne retirentque honte de leurs forces et de leur cavalerie.
32 Sow panic in their ranks, confound the confidence they put in their numbers and send them reeling indefeat.	32 Sème la panique dans leurs rangs, fais fondre l'assurance qu'ils mettent dans leur force etqu'ils soient ébranlés par leur défaite.
33 Overthrow them by the sword of those who love you, and all who acknowledge your name wil singyour praises.'	33 Renverse-les sous l'épée de ceux qui t'aiment, et que te louent dans les hymnes tous ceux quiconnaissent ton nom!"
34 The two forces engaged, and five thousand men of Lysias' troops fel in hand-to-hand fighting.	34 On en vint aux mains et il tomba de l'armée de Lysias jusqu'à 5.000 hommes, et cela dans lecorps à corps.
35 Seeing the rout of his army and the courage of Judas' troops and their readiness to live or die nobly,Lysias withdrew to Antioch, where he recruited mercenaries for a further invasion of Judaea in even greaterstrength.	35 Voyant la déroute de son armée et l'intrépidité des soldats de Judas qui étaient prêts à vivreou à mourir courageusement, Lysias reprit le chemin d'Antioche où il recruta des étrangers pour revenir en Judéeavec plus de troupes qu'auparavant.
36 Judas and his brothers then said, 'Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go up to purifythe sanctuary and dedicate it.'	36 Alors Judas et ses frères dirent: "Voici nos ennemis écrasés, allons purifier le sanctuaire etfaire la dédicace."
37 So they marshal ed the whole army, and went up to Mount Zion.	37 Toute l'armée s'assembla et ils montèrent au mont Sion.
38 There they found the sanctuary deserted, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt down, and vegetationgrowing in the courts as it might in a wood or on some mountain, while the storerooms were in ruins.	38 Ils virent là le lieu saint désolé, l'autel profané, les portes brûlées, des arbrisseaux poussésdans les parvis comme dans un bois ou sur une montagne, et les chambres détruites.
39 They tore their garments and mourned bitterly, putting dust on their heads.	39 Ils déchirèrent alors leurs vêtements, menèrent un grand deuil et répandirent de la cendre surleur tête.
40 They prostrated themselves on the ground, and when the trumpets gave the signal they cried aloud toHeaven.	40 Ils tombaient ensuite la face contre terre et, au signal donné par les trompettes, ils poussaientdes cris vers le Ciel.
41 Judas then ordered his men to keep the Citadel garrison engaged until he had purified the sanctuary.	41 Judas donna l'ordre à des hommes de combattre ceux qui étaient dans la Citadelle jusqu'à cequ'il eût nettoyé le sanctuaire.
42 Next, he selected priests who were blameless and zealous for the Law	42 Puis il choisit des prêtres sans tache et zélés pour la Loi,
43 to purify the sanctuary and remove the stones of the 'Pollution' to some unclean place.	43 qui purifièrent le sanctuaire et reléguèrent en un lieu impur les pierres de la souillure.
44 They discussed what should be done about the altar of burnt offering which had been profaned,	44 On délibéra sur ce qu'on devait faire de l'autel des holocaustes, qui avait été profané,
45 and very properly decided to pul it down, rather than later be embarrassed about it since it had beendefiled by the gentiles. They therefore demolished it	45 et il leur vint l'heureuse idée de le supprimer de peur qu'il ne leur devînt un sujet d'opprobre,du fait que les païens l'avaient souillé. Ils le démolirent
46 and deposited the stones in a suitable place on the hil of the Dwel ing to await the appearance of aprophet who should give a ruling about them.	46 et en déposèrent les pierres sur la montagne de la Demeure en un endroit convenable, enattendant la venue d'un prophète qui se prononcerait à leur sujet.
47 They took unhewn stones, as the Law prescribed, and built a new altar on the lines of the old one.	47 Ils prirent des pierres brutes, selon la Loi, et en bâtirent un autel nouveau sur le modèle duprécédent.
48 They restored the Holy Place and the interior of the Dwel ing, and purified the courts.	48 Ils réparèrent le sanctuaire et l'intérieur de la Demeure et sanctifièrent les parvis.
49 They made new sacred vessels, and brought the lamp-stand, the altar of incense, and the table intothe Temple.	49 Ayant fait de nouveaux ustensiles sacrés, ils introduisirent dans le Temple le candélabre,l'autel des parfums et la table.
50 They burned incense on the altar and lit the lamps on the lamp-stand, and these shone inside theTemple.	50 Ils firent fumer l'encens sur l'autel et allumèrent les lampes du candélabre qui brillèrent àl'intérieur du Temple.
51 They placed the loaves on the table and hung the curtains and completed al the tasks they hadundertaken.	51 Ils déposèrent les pains sur la table, suspendirent les rideaux et achevèrent tout ce qu'ilsavaient entrepris.
52 On the twenty-fifth of the ninth month, Chislev, in the year 148 they rose at dawn	52 Le 25 du neuvième mois -- nommé Kisleu -- en l'an 148, ils se levèrent au point du jour
53 and offered a lawful sacrifice on the new altar of burnt offering which they had made.	53 et offrirent un sacrifice légal sur le nouvel autel des holocaustes qu'ils avaient construit.
54 The altar was dedicated, to the sound of hymns, zithers, lyres and cymbals, at the same time of yearand on the same day on which the gentiles had original y profaned it.	54 L'autel fut inauguré au son des hymnes, des cithares, des lyres et des cymbales, à la mêmeépoque et le même jour que les païens l'avaient profané.
55 The whole people fel prostrate in adoration and then praised Heaven who had granted them success.	55 Le peuple entier se prosterna pour adorer, puis il fit monter la louange vers le Ciel qui l'avaitconduit au succès.
56 For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar, joyful y offering burnt offerings, communionand thanksgiving sacrifices.	56 Huit jours durant, ils célébrèrent la dédicace de l'autel, offrant des holocaustes avecallégresse et le sacrifice de communion et d'action de grâces.
57 They ornamented the front of the Temple with crowns and bosses of gold, renovated the gates andstorerooms, providing the latter with doors.	57 Ils ornèrent la façade du Temple de couronnes d'or et d'écussons, remirent à neuf les entréesainsi que les chambres qu'ils pourvurent de portes.
58 There was no end to the rejoicing among the people, since the disgrace inflicted by the gentiles hadbeen effaced.	58 Une grande joie régna parmi le peuple et l'opprobre infligé par les païens fut effacé.
59 Judas, with his brothers and the whole assembly of Israel, made it a law that the days of thededication of the altar should be celebrated yearly at the proper season, for eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth of the month of Chislev, with rejoicing and gladness.	59 Judas décida avec ses frères et toute l'assemblée d'Israël que les jours de la dédicace del'autel seraient célébrés en leur temps chaque année pendant huit jours, à partir du 25 du mois de Kisleu, avecjoie et allégresse.
60 They then proceeded to build high wal s with strong towers round Mount Zion, to prevent the gentilesfrom coming and riding roughshod over it as in the past.	60 Ils bâtirent en ce temps-là tout autour du mont Sion des murs élevés et de fortes tours, depeur que les nations ne vinssent comme auparavant fouler ces lieux.
61 Judas stationed a garrison there to guard it; he also fortified Beth-Zur, so that the people would havea fortress confronting Idumaea.	61 Judas y plaça une garnison pour le garder. Il fortifia Bethsour pour que le peuple eût uneforteresse face à l'Idumée.
