1 Gorgias took with him five thousand foot and a thousand picked cavalry, and the force moved off bynight	1 Gorgia prese con sé cinquemila uomini e mille cavalieri scelti. L'armata partì di notte,
2 with the object of attacking the Jewish position and dealing them an unexpected blow; the men fromthe Citadel were there to guide him.	2 in modo da piombare addosso all'armata dei Giudei e colpirli all'improvviso. Gli uomini dell'Acra gli facevano da guida.
3 Judas got wind of it and himself moved off with his fighters to strike at the royal army at Emmaus,	3 Giuda, appena lo seppe, partì anch'egli con i suoi guerrieri per colpire le forze del re che erano in Emmaus,
4 while its fighting troops were stil dispersed outside the camp.	4 mentre le schiere erano ancora disperse, lontane dal campo.
5 Hence, when Gorgias reached Judas' camp, he found no one and began looking for the Jews in themountains. 6 First light found Judas in the plain with three thousand men, although these lacked the armour andswords they would have wished.	6 Giuda, invece, sul far del giorno, apparve nella pianura con tremila uomini, i quali però non avevano né armature né spade, come avrebbero desiderato.
7 They could now see the gentile encampment with its strong fortifications and cavalry surrounding it,clearly people who understood warfare.	7 Videro che l'accampamento dei gentili era potente e fortificato e che la cavalleria lo circondava all'intorno e tutti erano esperti di guerra.
8 Judas said to his men, 'Do not be afraid of their numbers, and do not flinch at their attack.	8 Giuda perciò disse agli uomini che erano con lui: "Non temete la loro moltitudine e non abbiate paura del loro ardore.
9 Remember how our ancestors were delivered at the Red Sea when Pharaoh was pursuing them inforce.	9 Ricordate come i nostri padri furono salvati nel Mar Rosso, quando il faraone li inseguiva con un esercito.
10 And now let us cal on Heaven: if he cares for us, he wil remember his covenant with our ancestorsand will destroy this army confronting us today;	10 Ora innalziamo grida al Cielo, se mai voglia compiacersi di noi, ricordarsi dell'alleanza dei padri e abbattere quest'armata davanti a noi oggi.
11 then all the nations wil know for certain that there is One who ransoms and saves Israel.'	11 Allora tutte le genti riconosceranno che vi è chi redime e salva Israele".
12 The foreigners looked up and, seeing the Jews advancing against them,	12 Quando gli stranieri alzarono gli occhi e se li videro venire avanti,
13 came out of the camp to join battle. Judas' men sounded the trumpet	13 uscirono dall'accampamento per combattere. Quelli di Giuda, suonate le trombe,
14 and engaged them. The gentiles were defeated and fled towards the plain	14 si gettarono nella mischia e riuscirono ad abbattere i gentili che fuggirono verso la pianura,
15 and al the stragglers fel by the sword. The pursuit continued as far as Gezer and the plains ofIdumaea, Azotus and Jamnia, and the enemy lost about three thousand men.	15 mentre quelli che erano rimasti indietro caddero sotto la spada. 16 Breaking off the pursuit, Judas returned with his men	16 Giuda pertanto, tornato indietro con l'esercito dal loro inseguimento,
17 and said to the people, 'Never mind the booty, for we have another battle ahead of us.	17 disse al popolo: "Mettete da parte la brama del bottino, poiché un'altra battaglia ci sta davanti.
18 Gorgias and his troops are still near us in the mountains. First stand up to our enemies and fight them,and then you can safely collect the booty.'	18 Gorgia con l'esercito è sulla montagna vicina a noi. Ora perciò resistete davanti ai nostri nemici e combattete contro di essi; poi raccoglierete il bottino con libertà".
19 The words were hardly out of Judas' mouth, when a detachment came into view, peering down fromthe mountain.	19 Mentre Giuda stava ancora per finire di dire tali cose, ecco che una schiera apparve, sbucando dalla montagna.
20 Observing that their own troops had been routed and that the camp had been fired -- since the smoke,which they could see, attested the fact-	20 Videro che i loro erano stati messi in fuga e che il campo era in fiamme. Il fumo che si vedeva rivelava infatti ciò che era accaduto.
21 they were panic-stricken at the sight; and when, furthermore, they saw Judas' troops drawn up forbattle on the plain,	21 Vedendo ciò, furono presi da grande paura. Quindi, vedendo pure che l'esercito di Giuda era in pianura, pronto per lo scontro,
22 they al fled into Philistine territory.	22 se ne fuggirono tutti verso la terra dei Filistei.
23 Judas then turned back to plunder the camp, and a large sum in gold and silver, with violet and sea-purple stuffs, and many other valuables were carried off.	23 Giuda allora tornò al bottino dell'accampamento e raccolse molto oro e argento, stoffe tinte di porpora violetta e marina e ricchezze in quantità.
24 On their return, the Jews chanted praises to Heaven, singing, 'He is kind and his love is everlasting!'	24 Andando via, poi, inneggiavano e benedicevano il Cielo, perché è buono ed eterna è la sua misericordia.
25 That day had seen a remarkable deliverance in Israel.	25 Fu quello un giorno di liberazione per Israele.
26 Those of the foreigners who had escaped came and gave Lysias an account of all that had happened.	26 Quanti degli stranieri si erano salvati, andati da Lisia, gli annunziarono tutto ciò che era successo.
27 The news shocked and dismayed him, for affairs in Israel had not gone as he intended, and the resultwas quite the opposite to what the king had ordered.	27 Egli allora, udendo ciò, rimase sconvolto e scoraggiato, poiché le cose in Israele non erano andate com'egli desiderava né come il re gli aveva comandato.
28 The next year he mobilised sixty thousand picked troops and five thousand cavalry with the intentionof finishing off the Jews.	28 Perciò l'anno seguente egli radunò sessantamila uomini scelti e cinquemila cavalieri per mandarli a combattere.
29 They advanced into Idumaea and made their base at Beth-Zur, where Judas met them with tenthousand men.	29 Vennero nell'Idumea e si accamparono a Bet-Zur. Giuda allora gli mosse contro con diecimila uomini
30 When he saw their military strength he offered this prayer, 'Blessed are you, Saviour of Israel, whoshattered the mighty warrior's attack at the hand of your servant David, and delivered the Philistine camp into thehands of Jonathan son of Saul, and his armour-bearer.	30 e, quando ebbe veduto il loro potente schieramento, pregò dicendo: "Benedetto sei tu, o Salvatore d'Israele, che piegasti l'impeto del gigante per mano del tuo servo Davide e consegnasti l'esercito dei Filistei nelle mani di Gionata, figlio di Saul, e di colui che portava le sue armi.
31 Crush this expedition in the same way at the hands of your people Israel; let their troops and cavalrybring them nothing but shame.	31 Allo stesso modo fa' cadere questo esercito nelle mani del tuo popolo Israele; che restino confusi nella loro forza e con la loro cavalleria.
32 Sow panic in their ranks, confound the confidence they put in their numbers and send them reeling indefeat.	32 Immetti in loro spavento e spezza l'audacia della loro forza, e siano travolti nella loro disfatta.
33 Overthrow them by the sword of those who love you, and all who acknowledge your name wil singyour praises.'	33 Gettali sotto la spada di coloro che ti amano; ti lodino con inni tutti quelli che conoscono il tuo nome".
34 The two forces engaged, and five thousand men of Lysias' troops fel in hand-to-hand fighting.	34 Si scagliarono gli uni contro gli altri e caddero davanti a loro circa cinquemila uomini del campo di Lisia.
35 Seeing the rout of his army and the courage of Judas' troops and their readiness to live or die nobly,Lysias withdrew to Antioch, where he recruited mercenaries for a further invasion of Judaea in even greaterstrength.	35 Lisia, vedendo la ritirata della sua armata e l'audacia dimostrata da quelli di Giuda, come cioè erano pronti a vivere o a morire da prodi, fece ritorno ad Antiochia, dove cominciò a reclutare mercenari stranieri più numerosi per portarsi di nuovo in Giudea.
36 Judas and his brothers then said, 'Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go up to purifythe sanctuary and dedicate it.'	36 Intanto Giuda e i suoi fratelli dissero: "Ecco, i nostri nemici sono stati sconfitti. Andiamo perciò a purificare il tempio e a restaurarlo".
37 So they marshal ed the whole army, and went up to Mount Zion.	37 Si riunì, allora, tutto l'esercito e salirono sul monte Sion.
38 There they found the sanctuary deserted, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt down, and vegetationgrowing in the courts as it might in a wood or on some mountain, while the storerooms were in ruins.	38 Videro così il santuario deserto, l'altare profanato, le porte bruciate, le piante cresciute nei cortili come in un bosco o come su una montagna, le celle in rovina.
39 They tore their garments and mourned bitterly, putting dust on their heads.	39 Si stracciarono le vesti, fecero un grande lamento, si cosparsero di cenere,
40 They prostrated themselves on the ground, and when the trumpets gave the signal they cried aloud toHeaven.	40 caddero con la faccia a terra e, suonate le trombe per segnale, elevarono grida al cielo.
41 Judas then ordered his men to keep the Citadel garrison engaged until he had purified the sanctuary.	41 Giuda allora ordinò agli uomini di combattere quelli che erano nell'Acra fino a quando egli non avesse purificato il santuario.
42 Next, he selected priests who were blameless and zealous for the Law	42 Scelse pure dei sacerdoti senza macchia, osservanti della legge,
43 to purify the sanctuary and remove the stones of the 'Pollution' to some unclean place.	43 i quali purificarono il santuario e trasportarono le pietre della contaminazione in un luogo impuro.

45 and very properly decided to pul it down, rather than later be embarrassed about it since it had beendefiled by the gentiles. 47 They took unhewn stones, as the Law prescribed, and built a new altar on the lines of the old one.	47 Poi presero pietre intatte conformi alla legge e costruirono un nuovo altare sul modello del precedente.
48 They restored the Holy Place and the interior of the Dwel ing, and purified the courts.	48 Ripararono il santuario e l'interno del tempio e consacrarono i cortili.
49 They made new sacred vessels, and brought the lamp-stand, the altar of incense, and the table intothe Temple.	49 Fecero fare nuovi arredi sacri e portarono dentro il tempio il candelabro, l'altare dei profumi e la tavola.
50 They burned incense on the altar and lit the lamps on the lamp-stand, and these shone inside theTemple.	50 Bruciarono incenso sull'altare e accesero le lampade del candelabro, che risplendettero nel tempio.
51 They placed the loaves on the table and hung the curtains and completed al the tasks they hadundertaken.	51 Posero sulla tavola i pani, distesero le cortine e terminarono tutti i lavori che avevano intrapreso.
52 On the twenty-fifth of the ninth month, Chislev, in the year 148 they rose at dawn	52 Il giorno 25 del nono mese, cioè il mese di Casleu dell'anno 148, si levarono di buon mattino
53 and offered a lawful sacrifice on the new altar of burnt offering which they had made.	53 e offrirono un sacrificio, in conformità alla legge, sul nuovo altare degli olocausti che avevano costruito.
54 The altar was dedicated, to the sound of hymns, zithers, lyres and cymbals, at the same time of yearand on the same day on which the gentiles had original y profaned it.	54 Esattamente nel tempo e nel giorno in cui i gentili lo avevano profanato, esso fu inaugurato con inni e a suon di cetre, di arpe e di cembali.
55 The whole people fel prostrate in adoration and then praised Heaven who had granted them success.	55 Tutto il popolo cadde con la faccia a terra, adorando e benedicendo il Cielo che li aveva condotti al successo.
56 For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar, joyful y offering burnt offerings, communionand thanksgiving sacrifices.	56 Celebrarono la dedicazione dell'altare per otto giorni, offrirono sacrifici con allegrezza e offrirono pure un sacrificio di ringraziamento e di lode.
57 They ornamented the front of the Temple with crowns and bosses of gold, renovated the gates andstorerooms, providing the latter with doors.	57 Ornarono la facciata del tempio con corone d'oro e scudi, inaugurarono le porte e le celle e vi rimisero i battenti.
58 There was no end to the rejoicing among the people, since the disgrace inflicted by the gentiles hadbeen effaced.	58 Vi fu una stragrande allegrezza in mezzo al popolo e così fu cancellato l'obbrobrio dei gentili.
59 Judas, with his brothers and the whole assembly of Israel, made it a law that the days of thededication of the altar should be celebrated yearly at the proper season, for eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth of the month of Chislev, with rejoicing and gladness.	59 Poi Giuda, i suoi fratelli e tutta l'assemblea d'Israele, stabilirono che i giorni della dedicazione dell'altare si celebrassero a loro tempo, ogni anno, per otto giorni, a partire dal 25 del mese di Casleu, con allegrezza e gioia.
60 They then proceeded to build high wal s with strong towers round Mount Zion, to prevent the gentilesfrom coming and riding roughshod over it as in the past.	60 In quello stesso tempo costruirono pure, tutto intorno al monte Sion, alte mura e torri robuste per impedire che i gentili venissero a calpestarlo, come avevano fatto in precedenza.
61 Judas stationed a garrison there to guard it; he also fortified Beth-Zur, so that the people would havea fortress confronting Idumaea.	61 Giuda vi stabilì un presidio per difenderlo e poi fortificò anche Bet-Zur, affinché il popolo avesse una difesa contro l'Idumea.
