NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Gorgias took with him five thousand foot and a thousand picked cavalry, and the force moved off bynight	1 Gorgias tomó cinco mil hombres y mil jinetes elegidos, y el ejército partió durante la noche

7 They could now see the gentile encampment with its strong fortifications and cavalry surrounding it,clearly people who understood warfare.	7 Ellos veían, en cambio, que el campamento de los paganos era poderoso y estaba bien fortificado, rodeado de la caballería y con hombres adiestrados para la guerra.
8 Judas said to his men, 'Do not be afraid of their numbers, and do not flinch at their attack.	8 Judas dijo a sus hombres: «No teman a esa muchedumbre ni se asusten por sus ataques.
9 Remember how our ancestors were delivered at the Red Sea when Pharaoh was pursuing them inforce.	9 Recuerden cómo se salvaron nuestros padres en el Mar Rojo, cuando el Faraón los perseguía con un ejército.
10 And now let us cal on Heaven: if he cares for us, he wil remember his covenant with our ancestorsand will destroy this army confronting us today;	10 Invoquemos ahora al Cielo para que tenga piedad de nosotros.
11 then all the nations wil know for certain that there is One who ransoms and saves Israel.'	11 Así reconocerán todas las naciones que hay Alguien que libera y salva a Israel».
12 The foreigners looked up and, seeing the Jews advancing against them,	12 Los extranjeros alzaron los ojos y, al ver que los judíos venían contra ellos,
13 came out of the camp to join battle. Judas' men sounded the trumpet	13 salieron del campamento a presentar batalla. Los hombres de Judas hicieron sonar la trompeta
14 and engaged them. The gentiles were defeated and fled towards the plain	14 y entraron en combate. Los paganos fueron derrotados y huyeron hacia la llanura,
15 and al the stragglers fel by the sword. The pursuit continued as far as Gezer and the plains ofIdumaea, Azotus and Jamnia, and the enemy lost about three thousand men.	15 y los que habían quedado rezagados cayeron al filo de la espada. 16 Breaking off the pursuit, Judas returned with his men	16 Cuando Judas y su ejército dejaron de perseguirlos,
17 and said to the people, 'Never mind the booty, for we have another battle ahead of us.	17 Judas dijo al pueblo: «No tengan avidez por el botín, porque nos espera otra batalla.
18 Gorgias and his troops are still near us in the mountains. First stand up to our enemies and fight them,and then you can safely collect the booty.'	18 Gorgias y su ejército están cerca de nosotros en la montaña: hagan frente a nuestros enemigos y combatan contra ellos; después podrán apoderarse libremente del botín».
19 The words were hardly out of Judas' mouth, when a detachment came into view, peering down fromthe mountain.	19 Apenas Judas terminó de hablar, se asomó por las montañas un destacamento enemigo.
20 Observing that their own troops had been routed and that the camp had been fired -- since the smoke,which they could see, attested the fact-	20 Ellos vieron que los suyos habían huido y que el campamento había sido incendiado, porque el humo que se divisaba ponía de manifiesto lo que había sucedido.
21 they were panic-stricken at the sight; and when, furthermore, they saw Judas' troops drawn up forbattle on the plain,	21 Ante tal espectáculo se llenaron de espanto, y como vieron en la llanura al ejército de Judas, dispuesto a librar batalla.

23 Judas then turned back to plunder the camp, and a large sum in gold and silver, with violet and sea-purple stuffs, and many other valuables were carried off.	23 Judas volvió entonces al campamento para saquearlo, y recogieron gran cantidad de oro y plata, telas de púrpura violeta y de púrpura marina, y muchas otras riquezas.

25 That day had seen a remarkable deliverance in Israel.	25 Israel obtuvo aquel día una gran victoria.
26 Those of the foreigners who had escaped came and gave Lysias an account of all that had happened.	26 Los extranjeros que habían podido escapar se fueron a anunciar a Lisias todo lo que había sucedido.
27 The news shocked and dismayed him, for affairs in Israel had not gone as he intended, and the resultwas quite the opposite to what the king had ordered.	27 Esta noticia lo dejó consternado y abatido, porque a Israel no le había sucedido lo que él deseaba y las cosas no habían salido como el rey se lo había ordenado.

30 When he saw their military strength he offered this prayer, 'Blessed are you, Saviour of Israel, whoshattered the mighty warrior's attack at the hand of your servant David, and delivered the Philistine camp into thehands of Jonathan son of Saul, and his armour-bearer.	30 y al ver aquel poderoso ejército, hizo esta oración: «Bendito seas, Salvador de Israel, que aplastaste la soberbia del gigante por la mano de tu servidor David y entregaste el ejército de los filisteos en manos de Jonatán, hijo de Saúl, y de su escudero.
31 Crush this expedition in the same way at the hands of your people Israel; let their troops and cavalrybring them nothing but shame.	31 Entrega así este ejército en manos de tu pueblo Israel. Que ellos se sientan avergonzados de sus tropas y de su caballería.
32 Sow panic in their ranks, confound the confidence they put in their numbers and send them reeling indefeat.	32 Infúndeles miedo, quiebra la audacia que les da su fuerza y que se conmuevan por su derrota.
33 Overthrow them by the sword of those who love you, and all who acknowledge your name wil singyour praises.'	33 Derríbalos con la espada de los que te aman, para que te canten himnos de alabanza todos los que conocen tu Nombre».
34 The two forces engaged, and five thousand men of Lysias' troops fel in hand-to-hand fighting.	34 Cuando se enfrentaron los dos ejércitos, cayeron en el combate unos cinco mil hombres de Lisias.
35 Seeing the rout of his army and the courage of Judas' troops and their readiness to live or die nobly,Lysias withdrew to Antioch, where he recruited mercenaries for a further invasion of Judaea in even greaterstrength.	35 Al ver la derrota sufrida por sus tropas y la intrepidez de los soldados de Judas, que estaban resueltos a vivir o a morir heroicamente, Lisias volvió a Antioquía, donde reclutó mercenarios con la intención de regresar a Judea con fuerzas más numerosas.
36 Judas and his brothers then said, 'Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go up to purifythe sanctuary and dedicate it.'	36 Judas y sus hermanos dijeron: «Nuestros enemigos han sido aplastados; subamos a purificar el Santuario y a celebrar su dedicación».
37 So they marshal ed the whole army, and went up to Mount Zion.	37 Entonces se reunió todo el ejército y subieron al monte Sión.
38 There they found the sanctuary deserted, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt down, and vegetationgrowing in the courts as it might in a wood or on some mountain, while the storerooms were in ruins.	38 Cuando vieron el Santuario desolado, el altar profanado, las puertas completamente quemadas, las malezas crecidas en los atrios como en un bosque o en la montaña, y las salas destruidas,
39 They tore their garments and mourned bitterly, putting dust on their heads.	39 rasgaron sus vestiduras, hicieron un gran duelo, se cubrieron la cabeza con ceniza
40 They prostrated themselves on the ground, and when the trumpets gave the signal they cried aloud toHeaven.	40 y cayeron con el rostro en tierra. Luego, a una señal dada por las trompetas, alzaron sus gritos al cielo.
41 Judas then ordered his men to keep the Citadel garrison engaged until he had purified the sanctuary.	41 Judas ordenó a unos hombres que combatieran a los que estaban en la Ciudadela hasta terminar la purificación del Santuario.
42 Next, he selected priests who were blameless and zealous for the Law	42 Después eligió sacerdotes irreprochables, fieles a la Ley,

47 They took unhewn stones, as the Law prescribed, and built a new altar on the lines of the old one.	47 Después recogieron piedras sin tallar, como lo prescribe la Ley, y erigieron un nuevo altar, igual que el anterior.
48 They restored the Holy Place and the interior of the Dwel ing, and purified the courts.	48 También repararon el Santuario y el interior del Templo, y consagraron los atrios.
49 They made new sacred vessels, and brought the lamp-stand, the altar of incense, and the table intothe Temple.	49 Hicieron nuevos objetos sagrados y colocaron dentro del Templo el candelabro, el altar de los perfumes y la mesa.
50 They burned incense on the altar and lit the lamps on the lamp-stand, and these shone inside theTemple.	50 Quemaron incienso sobre el altar, y encendieron las lámparas del candelabro que comenzaron a brillar en el Templo.
51 They placed the loaves on the table and hung the curtains and completed al the tasks they hadundertaken.	51 Además, pusieron los panes sobre la mesa, colgaron las cortinas y concluyeron la obra que habían emprendido.
52 On the twenty-fifth of the ninth month, Chislev, in the year 148 they rose at dawn	52 El día veinticinco del noveno mes, llamado Quisleu, del año ciento cuarenta y ocho, se levantaron al despuntar el alba
53 and offered a lawful sacrifice on the new altar of burnt offering which they had made.	53 y ofrecieron un sacrificio conforme a la Ley, sobre el nuevo altar de los holocaustos que habían erigido.
54 The altar was dedicated, to the sound of hymns, zithers, lyres and cymbals, at the same time of yearand on the same day on which the gentiles had original y profaned it.	54 Este fue dedicado con cantos, cítaras, arpas y címbalos, justamente en el mismo mes y en el mismo día en que los paganos lo habían profanado.
55 The whole people fel prostrate in adoration and then praised Heaven who had granted them success.	55 Todo el pueblo cayó con el rostro en tierra y adoraron y bendijeron al Cielo que les había dado la victoria.
56 For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar, joyful y offering burnt offerings, communionand thanksgiving sacrifices.	56 Durante ocho días celebraron la dedicación del altar, ofreciendo con alegría holocaustos y sacrificios de comunión y de acción de gracias.
57 They ornamented the front of the Temple with crowns and bosses of gold, renovated the gates andstorerooms, providing the latter with doors.	57 Adornaron la fachada del Templo con coronas de oro y pequeños escudos, restauraron las entradas y las salas, y les pusieron puertas.
58 There was no end to the rejoicing among the people, since the disgrace inflicted by the gentiles hadbeen effaced.	58 En todo el pueblo reinó una inmensa alegría, y así quedó borrado el ultraje infligido por los paganos.
59 Judas, with his brothers and the whole assembly of Israel, made it a law that the days of thededication of the altar should be celebrated yearly at the proper season, for eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth of the month of Chislev, with rejoicing and gladness.	59 Judas, de acuerdo con sus hermanos y con toda la asamblea de Israel, determinó que cada año, a su debido tiempo y durante ocho días a contar del veinticinco del mes de Quisleu, se celebrara con júbilo y regocijo el aniversario de la dedicación del altar.
60 They then proceeded to build high wal s with strong towers round Mount Zion, to prevent the gentilesfrom coming and riding roughshod over it as in the past.	60 En aquel tiempo, levantaron alrededor del monte Sión altas murallas y torres poderosas, para que los extranjeros no vinieran otra vez y lo pisotearan como lo habían hecho antes.
61 Judas stationed a garrison there to guard it; he also fortified Beth-Zur, so that the people would havea fortress confronting Idumaea.	61 Además, Judas puso en él una guarnición para que lo defendiera, y fortificó a Betsur, a fin de que el pueblo tuviera una fortaleza frente a Idumea.
