1 Gorgias took with him five thousand foot and a thousand picked cavalry, and the force moved off bynight	1 - Gorgia dunque prese con sè cinquemila fanti e mille cavalieri scelti, e si misero in marcia di notte
2 with the object of attacking the Jewish position and dealing them an unexpected blow; the men fromthe Citadel were there to guide him.	2 verso il campo de0 Giudei, per assalirli all’improvviso; uomini della cittadella facevan loro da guida.
3 Judas got wind of it and himself moved off with his fighters to strike at the royal army at Emmaus,	3 Giuda lo seppe, e si mosse egli pure, ed i suoi forti con lui, per dar addosso al nerbo delle forze del re ch’erano in Emmaus;
4 while its fighting troops were stil dispersed outside the camp.	4 giacché quell’esercito era ancora sparso fuori degli accampamenti.
5 Hence, when Gorgias reached Judas' camp, he found no one and began looking for the Jews in themountains. 'For', he said, 'we have got them on the run.'	5 Gorgia pertanto arrivò di notte al campo di Giuda, e non vi trovò nessuno; li cercava pei monti, e diceva: «Questi sono fuggiti davanti a noi ».
6 First light found Judas in the plain with three thousand men, although these lacked the armour andswords they would have wished.	6 Ma fatto giorno, apparve Giuda nella pianura con soli tremila fanti che non avevano spade nè arnesi di protezione;
7 They could now see the gentile encampment with its strong fortifications and cavalry surrounding it,clearly people who understood warfare.	7 e videro il campo delle nazioni ben munito, soldati con corazze, e Cavalieri intorno, tutti pronti all’assalto.
8 Judas said to his men, 'Do not be afraid of their numbers, and do not flinch at their attack.	8 E disse Giuda agli uomini che aveva seco: « Non vi faccia paura il loro numero, e non temete il loro Impeto.
9 Remember how our ancestors were delivered at the Red Sea when Pharaoh was pursuing them inforce.	9 Ricordate fn qual modo i padri nostri furon salvati nel Mar Rosso, quando il Faraone li inseguiva con un esercito grande;
10 And now let us cal on Heaven: if he cares for us, he wil remember his covenant with our ancestorsand will destroy this army confronting us today;	10 ora dunque leviamo al cielo le grida ed il Signore avrà misericordia di noi, si ricorderà del patto fermato coi padri nostri, ed abbatterà oggi sotto i nostri occhi questo esercito;
11 then all the nations wil know for certain that there is One who ransoms and saves Israel.'	11 cosi, tutte le genti sapranno che v’è chi salva e libera Israele ».
12 The foreigners looked up and, seeing the Jews advancing against them,	12 I pagani alzarono gli occhi, e visto che quelli venivano contro di loro,
13 came out of the camp to join battle. Judas' men sounded the trumpet	13 uscirono dagli accampamenti per combattere. Quelli ch’eran con Giuda dettero flato alle trombe,
14 and engaged them. The gentiles were defeated and fled towards the plain	14 e si azzuffarono; i pagani furono sgominati, e fuggirono per la campagna,
15 and al the stragglers fel by the sword. The pursuit continued as far as Gezer and the plains ofIdumaea, Azotus and Jamnia, and the enemy lost about three thousand men.	15 Gli ultimi caddero tutti sotto la spada, ed [i Giudei] l'inseguirono sino a Gezeron e sino ai piani dell'Idumea, d’Azoto, e di Jamnia, e ne caddero sino a tremila.
16 Breaking off the pursuit, Judas returned with his men	16 E Giuda ritornò, con l'esercito che lo seguiva.
17 and said to the people, 'Never mind the booty, for we have another battle ahead of us.	17 E disse alla sua gente: «Non pensate a far preda, perchè un'altra battaglia cl aspetta,
18 Gorgias and his troops are still near us in the mountains. First stand up to our enemies and fight them,and then you can safely collect the booty.'	18 e Gorgia col suo esercito ci è vicino, sulla montagna. Ora state fermi contro i nostri nemici, e vinceteli ; poi, senza più pensiero, attenderete a far preda ».
19 The words were hardly out of Judas' mouth, when a detachment came into view, peering down fromthe mountain.	19 Non aveva finito di parlare che apparve sulla montagna una turma per esplorare.
20 Observing that their own troops had been routed and that the camp had been fired -- since the smoke,which they could see, attested the fact-	20 Gorgia vide che i suoi erano stati messi in fuga, e che gli accampamenti bruciavano; il fumo infatti che si vedeva, faceva conoscere l'accaduto.
21 they were panic-stricken at the sight; and when, furthermore, they saw Judas' troops drawn up forbattle on the plain,	21 Ciò visto, quelli ebbero un gran timore; vedendo poi Giuda ed il suo esercito nella pianura pronto a combattere,
22 they al fled into Philistine territory.	22 fuggiron tutti per le campagne degli stranieri.
23 Judas then turned back to plunder the camp, and a large sum in gold and silver, with violet and sea-purple stuffs, and many other valuables were carried off.	23 Allora Giuda tornò a far bottino nei loro accampamenti, e presero gran quantità d'oro e di argento, giacinto, porpora marina e ricchezze molte ;
24 On their return, the Jews chanted praises to Heaven, singing, 'He is kind and his love is everlasting!'	24 e tornando indietro cantavano un inno, e benedicevano Iddio del cielo, perchè è buono, perchè la sua misericordia è nei secoli.
25 That day had seen a remarkable deliverance in Israel.	25 Quel giorno fu per Israele una grande liberazione.
26 Those of the foreigners who had escaped came and gave Lysias an account of all that had happened.	26 Or tutti gli stranieri scampati vennero ad annunziare a Lisia quanto era accaduto.
27 The news shocked and dismayed him, for affairs in Israel had not gone as he intended, and the resultwas quite the opposite to what the king had ordered.	27 Udendo ciò, costernato, si perse d'animo, perchè le cose in Israele non erano andate come egli aveva voluto, e come il re aveva ordinato.
28 The next year he mobilised sixty thousand picked troops and five thousand cavalry with the intentionof finishing off the Jews.	28 L'anno seguente, Lisia mise insieme sessantamila fanti scelti, e cinquemila cavalieri, per venirne a capo.
29 They advanced into Idumaea and made their base at Beth-Zur, where Judas met them with tenthousand men.	29 Vennero In Giudea, e si accamparono in Betoron, e Giuda venne loro incontro con diecimila uomini.
30 When he saw their military strength he offered this prayer, 'Blessed are you, Saviour of Israel, whoshattered the mighty warrior's attack at the hand of your servant David, and delivered the Philistine camp into thehands of Jonathan son of Saul, and his armour-bearer.	30 Vedendo quell'esercito forte, Giuda pregò, e disse: «Benedetto sei tu, salvatore d'Israele, che per mano di David tuo servo annientasti la forza del gigante, e desti in mano a Gionata Aglio di Saul, ed al suo scudiere, il campo degli stranieri;
31 Crush this expedition in the same way at the hands of your people Israel; let their troops and cavalrybring them nothing but shame.	31 rinserra ora questo esercito fra le mani d'Israele tuo popolo, e restino concisi con tutto il loro numero ed i loro cavalieri;
32 Sow panic in their ranks, confound the confidence they put in their numbers and send them reeling indefeat.	32 metti in loro lo spavento, marcisca la loro audacia e potenza, e s'annientino da se medesimi.
33 Overthrow them by the sword of those who love you, and all who acknowledge your name wil singyour praises.'	33 Atterrali tu con la spada di quelli che tl amano, e quanti conoscono il tuo nome ti cantino inni di lode!».
34 The two forces engaged, and five thousand men of Lysias' troops fel in hand-to-hand fighting.	34 Attaccarono la battaglia, e caddero dell'esercito di Lisia cinquemila uomini.
35 Seeing the rout of his army and the courage of Judas' troops and their readiness to live or die nobly,Lysias withdrew to Antioch, where he recruited mercenaries for a further invasion of Judaea in even greaterstrength.	35 Lisia poi, vista la fuga de'suoi ed il valore de' Giudei preparati a vincere o morire da forti, se n'andò in Antiochia a levare, soldati, per poi, cresciuti di numero, tornare in Giudea.
36 Judas and his brothers then said, 'Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go up to purifythe sanctuary and dedicate it.'	36 "Dissero poi Giuda ed i suol fratelli: «Ecco, i nostri nemici son stati sconfìtti; andiamo a purificare il luogo santo, e rinnovarvi il culto ».
37 So they marshal ed the whole army, and went up to Mount Zion.	37 Si radunò tutto l'esercito, e salirono al monte Sion.
38 There they found the sanctuary deserted, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt down, and vegetationgrowing in the courts as it might in a wood or on some mountain, while the storerooms were in ruins.	38 Ivi trovarono deserto il santuario, profanato l'altare, bruciate le porte, cresciuti nel cortili gli sterpi come in un bosco o pei monti, e rovinate le celle.
39 They tore their garments and mourned bitterly, putting dust on their heads.	39 Allora si strapparon le vesti, e piansero di gran pianto, e si coprirono il capo di cenere,
40 They prostrated themselves on the ground, and when the trumpets gave the signal they cried aloud toHeaven.	40 e caddero con la faccia a terra, e sonarono le trombe del segnali, e levarono grida sino al cielo.
41 Judas then ordered his men to keep the Citadel garrison engaged until he had purified the sanctuary.	41 Allora Giuda mise in ordine degli uomini che tenessero a bada quelli della cittadella, sinché fosse purificato il santuario.
42 Next, he selected priests who were blameless and zealous for the Law	42 indi, scelse dei sacerdoti senza macchia, zelanti della legge di Dio,
43 to purify the sanctuary and remove the stones of the 'Pollution' to some unclean place.	43 i quali mondarono il luogo santo, e gettarono in luogo immondo le pietre contaminate.
44 They discussed what should be done about the altar of burnt offering which had been profaned,	44 Poi pensò che cosa fare dell’altare degli olocausti, profanato,
45 and very properly decided to pul it down, rather than later be embarrassed about it since it had beendefiled by the gentiles. They therefore demolished it	45 e parve a loro ben fatto di distruggerlo, acciò, cosi contaminato dai pagani non fosse a loro di obbrobrio. Lo demolirono dunque,
46 and deposited the stones in a suitable place on the hil of the Dwel ing to await the appearance of aprophet who should give a ruling about them.	46 e ne riposero le pietre sulla montagna del tempio, in luogo adatto, sino a che venisse un profeta e decidesse il da farne.
47 They took unhewn stones, as the Law prescribed, and built a new altar on the lines of the old one.	47 Poi presero delle pietre non lavorate, secondo la legge, e ne edificarono il nuovo altare, conforme a quello di prima;
48 They restored the Holy Place and the interior of the Dwel ing, and purified the courts.	48 riedificarono le mura del santuario e le costruzioni interne ; santificarono il tempio ed i cortili;
49 They made new sacred vessels, and brought the lamp-stand, the altar of incense, and the table intothe Temple.	49 rifecero i vasi santi, ricollocarono nel tempio il candelabro, l’altare degl' incensi, e la mensa;
50 They burned incense on the altar and lit the lamps on the lamp-stand, and these shone inside theTemple.	50 misero l’incenso sull’altare, ed accesero le lucerne che erano sul candelabro ed illuminavano il santuario.
51 They placed the loaves on the table and hung the curtains and completed al the tasks they hadundertaken.	51 Posero sulla mensa i pani, attaccarono i veli, e condussero a termine tutto il loro lavoro.
52 On the twenty-fifth of the ninth month, Chislev, in the year 148 they rose at dawn	52 Ai venticinque del nono mese, (cioè del mese Casleu) dell’anno ccntoquarantotto, s’alzarono avanti l’alba,
53 and offered a lawful sacrifice on the new altar of burnt offering which they had made.	53 ed offrirono un sacrifizio secondo la legge sull’altare degli olocausti che avevano costruito di nuovo.
54 The altar was dedicated, to the sound of hymns, zithers, lyres and cymbals, at the same time of yearand on the same day on which the gentiles had original y profaned it.	54 Proprio alla stessa epoca e nello stesso giorno nel quale i pagani l’avevano contaminato, fu rinnovato tra cantici e suoni di cetre, psalterii e cimbali.
55 The whole people fel prostrate in adoration and then praised Heaven who had granted them success.	55 Il popolo tutto si prostrò sino a terra, ed adorarono e benedissero quegli che dal cielo li aveva cosi prosperati.
56 For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar, joyful y offering burnt offerings, communionand thanksgiving sacrifices.	56 Per otto giorni celebrarono la dedicazione dell’altare, offrendo con giubilo olocausti e sacrifizi! di ringraziamento e di lode.
57 They ornamented the front of the Temple with crowns and bosses of gold, renovated the gates andstorerooms, providing the latter with doors.	57 Ornarono la fronte del tempio di corone d’oro e scudetti, riattarono gl’ ingressi e le celle, e vi rimisero le porte.
58 There was no end to the rejoicing among the people, since the disgrace inflicted by the gentiles hadbeen effaced.	58 E fu pel popolo un’allegrezza indicibile, e fu scancellato l’obbrobrio inflitto dalle nazioni.
59 Judas, with his brothers and the whole assembly of Israel, made it a law that the days of thededication of the altar should be celebrated yearly at the proper season, for eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth of the month of Chislev, with rejoicing and gladness.	59 E Giuda ed i suoi fratelli e tutta l’assemblea d’Israele stabilirono che il giorno della dedicazione dell’altare si celebrasse di anno in anno, al suo tempo, per otto giorni, cominciando coi venticinque del mese di Casleu, con gaudio e letizia.
60 They then proceeded to build high wal s with strong towers round Mount Zion, to prevent the gentilesfrom coming and riding roughshod over it as in the past.	60 Al medesimo tempo, fortificarono il monte Sion, edificandovi all'intorno alte mura e forti torri, acciò non venissero i gentili, e l’espugnassero, come avevano fatto prima.
61 Judas stationed a garrison there to guard it; he also fortified Beth-Zur, so that the people would havea fortress confronting Idumaea.	61 Vi collocò a guardia un presidio, e così fortificandolo munì anche Betsura, di modo che il popolo [d’Israele] avesse una difesa contro gl’ Idumei.
