1 Al Israel then ral ied to David at Hebron and said, 'Look, we are your own flesh and bone.	1 ויקבצו כל ישראל אל דויד חברונה לאמר הנה עצמך ובשרך אנחנו
2 In days past when Saul was king, it was you who led Israel on its campaigns, and Yahweh your Godpromised you, "You are to shepherd my people Israel and be leader of my people Israel." '	2 גם תמול גם שלשום גם בהיות שאול מלך אתה המוציא והמביא את ישראל ויאמר יהוה אלהיך לך אתה תרעה את עמי את ישראל ואתה תהיה נגיד על עמי ישראל
3 So al the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a pact with them in Yahweh'spresence at Hebron, and they anointed David as king of Israel, in accordance with the word of Yahweh throughSamuel.	3 ויבאו כל זקני ישראל אל המלך חברונה ויכרת להם דויד ברית בחברון לפני יהוה וימשחו את דויד למלך על ישראל כדבר יהוה ביד שמואל
4 David and al Israel then marched on Jerusalem (that is to say, Jebus); the inhabitants of the territorywere the Jebusites.	4 וילך דויד וכל ישראל ירושלם היא יבוס ושם היבוסי ישבי הארץ
5 The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, 'You wil not get in here.' But David captured the citadel ofZion, that is, the City of David.	5 ויאמרו ישבי יבוס לדויד לא תבוא הנה וילכד דויד את מצדת ציון היא עיר דויד
6 David said, 'The first man to kill a Jebusite will be made army commander and chief.' Joab son ofZeruiah was the first man to go up, and was made commander of the army.	6 ויאמר דויד כל מכה יבוסי בראשונה יהיה לראש ולשר ויעל בראשונה יואב בן צרויה ויהי לראש
7 David went to live in the citadel, and that is how it came to be cal ed the City of David.	7 וישב דויד במצד על כן קראו לו עיר דויד
8 He then built a wal round the city, al round, beginning from the Mil o, and Joab restored the rest ofthe city.	8 ויבן העיר מסביב מן המלוא ועד הסביב ויואב יחיה את שאר העיר
9 Thus David grew stronger and stronger, for Yahweh Sabaoth was with him.	9 וילך דויד הלוך וגדול ויהוה צבאות עמו
10 These are David's principal champions who joined forces with him in his kingdom, with al Israel, tomake him king in accordance with the word of Yahweh concerning Israel.	10 ואלה ראשי הגבורים אשר לדויד המתחזקים עמו במלכותו עם כל ישראל להמליכו כדבר יהוה על ישראל
11 This is the roll of David's champions: Jashobeam son of Hachmoni, head of the Three; he it was whobrandished his spear over three hundred men whom he had kil ed at one time.	11 ואלה מספר הגברים אשר לדויד ישבעם בן חכמוני ראש השלושים הוא עורר את חניתו על שלש מאות חלל בפעם אחת
12 Next, there was Eleazar son of Dodo, the Ahohite, one of the three champions.	12 ואחריו אלעזר בן דודו האחוחי הוא בשלושה הגברים
13 He was with David at Pas-Dammim when the Philistines mustered for battle there. There was a fieldful of barley there; and the people fled from the Philistines.	13 הוא היה עם דויד בפס דמים והפלשתים נאספו שם למלחמה ותהי חלקת השדה מלאה שעורים והעם נסו מפני פלשתים
14 And they took their stand in the middle of the field, held it and cut down the Philistines; and Yahwehbrought about a great victory.	14 ויתיצבו בתוך החלקה ויצילוה ויכו את פלשתים ויושע יהוה תשועה גדולה
15 Three members of the Thirty went down to David at the rock near the Cave of Adul am while acompany of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of the Rephaim.	15 וירדו שלושה מן השלושים ראש על הצר אל דויד אל מערת עדלם ומחנה פלשתים חנה בעמק רפאים
16 David was then in the stronghold and there was a Philistine garrison in Bethlehem.	16 ודויד אז במצודה ונציב פלשתים אז בבית לחם
17 Longingly, David said, 'If only someone would fetch me a drink of water from the wel that stands bythe gate at Bethlehem!'	17 ויתאו דויד ויאמר מי ישקני מים מבור בית לחם אשר בשער
18 At this the three champions, forcing their way through the Philistine camp, drew water from the welthat stands by the gate of Bethlehem and, bringing it away, presented it to David. David, however, would notdrink any of it, but poured it out as a libation to Yahweh.	18 ויבקעו השלשה במחנה פלשתים וישאבו מים מבור בית לחם אשר בשער וישאו ויבאו אל דויד ולא אבה דויד לשתותם וינסך אתם ליהוה
19 'God preserve me', he said, 'from doing such a thing! Am I to drink these men's blood? For at the riskof their lives they brought it.' And so he would not drink. Such were the deeds of the three champions.	19 ויאמר חלילה לי מאלהי מעשות זאת הדם האנשים האלה אשתה בנפשותם כי בנפשותם הביאום ולא אבה לשתותם אלה עשו שלשת הגבורים
20 Abishai, brother of Joab, was leader of the Thirty. He it was who brandished his spear over threehundred men whom he had killed, winning himself a name among the Thirty.	20 ואבשי אחי יואב הוא היה ראש השלושה והוא עורר את חניתו על שלש מאות חלל ולא שם בשלושה
21 He was a most il ustrious member of the Thirty and became their captain, but he was not equal to theThree.	21 מן השלושה בשנים נכבד ויהי להם לשר ועד השלושה לא בא
22 Benaiah son of Jehoiada from Kabzeel was the hero of many exploits; he it was who slaughtered twoformidable Moabites and, one snowy day, climbed down and slaughtered the lion in the storage-wel .	22 בניה בן יהוידע בן איש חיל רב פעלים מן קבצאל הוא הכה את שני אריאל מואב והוא ירד והכה את הארי בתוך הבור ביום השלג
23 He also slaughtered an Egyptian, a man who was seven and a half feet tal . The Egyptian was armedwith a spear in his hand like a weaver's beam, but he took him on with a staff, tore the spear from the Egyptian'shand and kil ed the man with it.	23 והוא הכה את האיש המצרי איש מדה חמש באמה וביד המצרי חנית כמנור ארגים וירד אליו בשבט ויגזל את החנית מיד המצרי ויהרגהו בחניתו
24 Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, winning him a name among the thirtychampions.	24 אלה עשה בניהו בן יהוידע ולו שם בשלושה הגברים
25 He was a most il ustrious member of the Thirty, but he was not equal to the Three. David put him incommand of his bodyguard.	25 מן השלושים הנו נכבד הוא ואל השלושה לא בא וישימהו דויד על משמעתו
26 The military champions were: Asahel brother of Joab; Elhanan son of Dodo, of Bethlehem;	26 וגבורי החילים עשה אל אחי יואב אלחנן בן דודו מבית לחם
27 Shammoth of Haror; Helez the Pelonite;	27 שמות ההרורי חלץ הפלוני
28 Ira son of Ikkesh, of Tekoa; Abiezer of Anathoth;	28 עירא בן עקש התקועי אביעזר הענתותי
29 Sibbecai of Hushah; Ilai of Ahoh;	29 סבכי החשתי עילי האחוחי
30 Maharai of Netophah; Heled son of Baanah, of Netophah.	30 מהרי הנטפתי חלד בן בענה הנטופתי
31 Ithai son of Ribai, of Gibeah in Benjamin. Benaiah of Pirathon;	31 איתי בן ריבי מגבעת בני בנימן בניה הפרעתני
