When Ahab told Jezebel everything that Elijah had done, and how he had put all the prophets to thesword,1 Acab referiu a Jezabel tudo o que Elias tinha feito e como ele tinha matado à espada todos os profetas,
Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, 'May the gods bring unnameable il s on me and worse il stoo, if by this time tomorrow I have not made your life like one of theirs!'2 Jezabel enviou um mensageiro a Elias, dizendo: Os deuses me tratem com toda a sua severidade, se eu amanhã, a esta mesma hora, te não fizer perder a vida, como tu a fizeste perder a cada um deles.
He was afraid and fled for his life. He came to Beersheba, a town of Judah, where he left his servant.3 Elias teve medo e, levantando-se, foi para onde o seu desejo o levava.
He himself went on into the desert, a day's journey, and sitting under a furze bush wished he weredead. 'Yahweh,' he said, 'I have had enough. Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.'4 e andou pelo deserto um dia de caminho.
Then he lay down and went to sleep. Then al of a sudden an angel touched him and said, 'Get up andeat.'5 Depois lançou-se por terra e adormeceu à sombra do junípero. Então um anjo do Senhor o tocou e lhe disse: Levanta-te e come.
He looked round, and there at his head was a scone baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ateand drank and then lay down again.6 Olhou e viu junto à sua cabeça um pão cozido debaixo da cinza, e um vaso de água; comeu, pois, e bebeu, e tornou a adormecer.
But the angel of Yahweh came back a second time and touched him and said, 'Get up and eat, or thejourney will be too long for you.'7 Voltou segunda vez o anjo do Senhor, que o tocou e lhe disse: Levanta-te e come, porque te resta um longo caminho.
So he got up and ate and drank, and strengthened by that food he walked for forty days and fortynights until he reached Horeb, God's mountain.8 Tendo-se ele levantado, comeu e bebeu e, com o vigor daquela comida, caminhou quarenta dias e quarenta noites, até ao monte de Deus, Horeb.
There he went into a cave and spent the night there. Then the word of Yahweh came to him saying,'What are you doing here, Elijah?'9 Tendo chegado ali, passou a noite numa caverna. Então o Senhor lhe dirigiu a sua palavra: Que fazes aqui, Elias?
He replied, 'I am ful of jealous zeal for Yahweh Sabaoth, because the Israelites have abandoned yourcovenant, have torn down your altars and put your prophets to the sword. I am the only one left, and now theywant to kil me.'10 Ele respondeu: Eu me consumo de zelo pelo Senhor Deus dos exércitos, porque os filhos de Israel abandonaram a tua aliança, destruíram os teus altares, mataram os teus profetas à espada. Eu fiquei só, mas procuram-me para me tirarem a vida.
Then he was told, 'Go out and stand on the mountain before Yahweh.' For at that moment Yahwehwas going by. A mighty hurricane split the mountains and shattered the rocks before Yahweh. But Yahweh wasnot in the hurricane. And after the hurricane, an earthquake. But Yahweh was not in the earthquake.11 (O Senhor) disse-lhe: Sai e conserva-te sobre o monte diante do Senhor, porque o Senhor vai passar.
And after the earthquake, fire. But Yahweh was not in the fire.
And when Elijah heard this, he covered his face with his cloak and went out and stood at the entranceof the cave. Then a voice came to him, which said, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?'13 Tendo Elias ouvido isto, cobriu o seu rosto com a capa, e, tendo saldo, pôs-se à entrada da caverna. Ele respondeu:
He replied, 'I am ful of jealous zeal for Yahweh, God Sabaoth, because the Israelites haveabandoned your covenant, have torn down your altars and put your prophets to the sword. I am the only one leftand now they want to kil me.'14 Consumo-me de zelo pelo Senhor Deus dos exércitos, porque os filhos de Israel abandonaram a tua aliança, destruíram os teus altares, mataram os teus profetas à espada; eu fiquei só, e eles procuram-me para me tirarem a vida.
'Go,' Yahweh said, 'go back by the same way to the desert of Damascus. You must go and anointHazael as king of Aram.15 O Senhor disse-lhe: Vai e torna ao teu caminho pelo deserto para Damasco; quando lá tiveres chegado, ungirás Hazael como rei da Síria;
You must anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king of Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat, of Abel-Meholah, as prophet to succeed you.16 a Jeú, filho de Namsi, ungirás rei de Israel; a Eliseu, filho de Safat, que é de Abelmeula, o ungirás profeta em teu lugar.
Anyone who escapes the sword of Hazael wil be put to death by Jehu; and anyone who escapes thesword of Jehu wil be put to death by Elisha.17 Acontecerá que todo o que escapar à espada de Hazael, Jeú o matará; e todo o que escapar à espada de Jeú, Eliseu o matará.
But I shal spare seven thousand in Israel; all the knees that have not bent before Baal, al the mouthsthat have not kissed him.'18 Eu reservarei para mim em Israel sete mil homens, que não dobraram os joelhos diante de Baal e não o adoraram, beijando a sua mão.
Leaving there, he came on Elisha son of Shaphat as he was ploughing behind twelve yoke of oxen,he himself being with the twelfth.
Elisha left his oxen and ran after Elijah. 'Let me kiss my father and mother, then I wil fol ow you,' hesaid. Elijah answered, 'Go, go back; for have I done anything to you?'20 Ele, deixando Imediatamente os bois, correu após Elias e disse: Permite-me que eu vá beijar meu pai e minha mãe; depois seguir-te-el.
Elisha turned away, took a yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He used the oxen's tackle for cookingthe meat, which he gave the people to eat.
