1 When Ahab told Jezebel everything that Elijah had done, and how he had put all the prophets to thesword,	1 ויגד אחאב לאיזבל את כל אשר עשה אליהו ואת כל אשר הרג את כל הנביאים בחרב
2 Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, 'May the gods bring unnameable il s on me and worse il stoo, if by this time tomorrow I have not made your life like one of theirs!'	2 ותשלח איזבל מלאך אל אליהו לאמר כה יעשון אלהים וכה יוספון כי כעת מחר אשים את נפשך כנפש אחד מהם
3 He was afraid and fled for his life. He came to Beersheba, a town of Judah, where he left his servant.	3 וירא ויקם וילך אל נפשו ויבא באר שבע אשר ליהודה וינח את נערו שם
4 He himself went on into the desert, a day's journey, and sitting under a furze bush wished he weredead. 'Yahweh,' he said, 'I have had enough. Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.'	4 והוא הלך במדבר דרך יום ויבא וישב תחת רתם אחת וישאל את נפשו למות ויאמר רב עתה יהוה קח נפשי כי לא טוב אנכי מאבתי
5 Then he lay down and went to sleep. Then al of a sudden an angel touched him and said, 'Get up andeat.'	5 וישכב ויישן תחת רתם אחד והנה זה מלאך נגע בו ויאמר לו קום אכול
6 He looked round, and there at his head was a scone baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ateand drank and then lay down again.	6 ויבט והנה מראשתיו עגת רצפים וצפחת מים ויאכל וישת וישב וישכב
7 But the angel of Yahweh came back a second time and touched him and said, 'Get up and eat, or thejourney will be too long for you.'	7 וישב מלאך יהוה שנית ויגע בו ויאמר קום אכל כי רב ממך הדרך
8 So he got up and ate and drank, and strengthened by that food he walked for forty days and fortynights until he reached Horeb, God's mountain.	8 ויקם ויאכל וישתה וילך בכח האכילה ההיא ארבעים יום וארבעים לילה עד הר האלהים חרב
9 There he went into a cave and spent the night there. Then the word of Yahweh came to him saying,'What are you doing here, Elijah?'	9 ויבא שם אל המערה וילן שם והנה דבר יהוה אליו ויאמר לו מה לך פה אליהו
10 He replied, 'I am ful of jealous zeal for Yahweh Sabaoth, because the Israelites have abandoned yourcovenant, have torn down your altars and put your prophets to the sword. I am the only one left, and now theywant to kil me.'	10 ויאמר קנא קנאתי ליהוה אלהי צבאות כי עזבו בריתך בני ישראל את מזבחתיך הרסו ואת נביאיך הרגו בחרב ואותר אני לבדי ויבקשו את נפשי לקחתה
11 Then he was told, 'Go out and stand on the mountain before Yahweh.' For at that moment Yahwehwas going by. A mighty hurricane split the mountains and shattered the rocks before Yahweh. But Yahweh wasnot in the hurricane. And after the hurricane, an earthquake. But Yahweh was not in the earthquake.	11 ויאמר צא ועמדת בהר לפני יהוה והנה יהוה עבר ורוח גדולה וחזק מפרק הרים ומשבר סלעים לפני יהוה לא ברוח יהוה ואחר הרוח רעש לא ברעש יהוה
12 And after the earthquake, fire. But Yahweh was not in the fire. And after the fire, a light murmuring sound.	12 ואחר הרעש אש לא באש יהוה ואחר האש קול דממה דקה
13 And when Elijah heard this, he covered his face with his cloak and went out and stood at the entranceof the cave. Then a voice came to him, which said, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?'	13 ויהי כשמע אליהו וילט פניו באדרתו ויצא ויעמד פתח המערה והנה אליו קול ויאמר מה לך פה אליהו
14 He replied, 'I am ful of jealous zeal for Yahweh, God Sabaoth, because the Israelites haveabandoned your covenant, have torn down your altars and put your prophets to the sword. I am the only one leftand now they want to kil me.'	14 ויאמר קנא קנאתי ליהוה אלהי צבאות כי עזבו בריתך בני ישראל את מזבחתיך הרסו ואת נביאיך הרגו בחרב ואותר אני לבדי ויבקשו את נפשי לקחתה
15 'Go,' Yahweh said, 'go back by the same way to the desert of Damascus. You must go and anointHazael as king of Aram.	15 ויאמר יהוה אליו לך שוב לדרכך מדברה דמשק ובאת ומשחת את חזאל למלך על ארם
16 You must anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king of Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat, of Abel-Meholah, as prophet to succeed you.	16 ואת יהוא בן נמשי תמשח למלך על ישראל ואת אלישע בן שפט מאבל מחולה תמשח לנביא תחתיך
17 Anyone who escapes the sword of Hazael wil be put to death by Jehu; and anyone who escapes thesword of Jehu wil be put to death by Elisha.	17 והיה הנמלט מחרב חזאל ימית יהוא והנמלט מחרב יהוא ימית אלישע
18 But I shal spare seven thousand in Israel; all the knees that have not bent before Baal, al the mouthsthat have not kissed him.'	18 והשארתי בישראל שבעת אלפים כל הברכים אשר לא כרעו לבעל וכל הפה אשר לא נשק לו
19 Leaving there, he came on Elisha son of Shaphat as he was ploughing behind twelve yoke of oxen,he himself being with the twelfth. Elijah passed near to him and threw his cloak over him.	19 וילך משם וימצא את אלישע בן שפט והוא חרש שנים עשר צמדים לפניו והוא בשנים העשר ויעבר אליהו אליו וישלך אדרתו אליו
20 Elisha left his oxen and ran after Elijah. 'Let me kiss my father and mother, then I wil fol ow you,' hesaid. Elijah answered, 'Go, go back; for have I done anything to you?'	20 ויעזב את הבקר וירץ אחרי אליהו ויאמר אשקה נא לאבי ולאמי ואלכה אחריך ויאמר לו לך שוב כי מה עשיתי לך
21 Elisha turned away, took a yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He used the oxen's tackle for cookingthe meat, which he gave the people to eat. He then rose and, following Elijah, became his servant.	21 וישב מאחריו ויקח את צמד הבקר ויזבחהו ובכלי הבקר בשלם הבשר ויתן לעם ויאכלו ויקם וילך אחרי אליהו וישרתהו
