NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 When Ahab told Jezebel everything that Elijah had done, and how he had put all the prophets to thesword,	1 Acab raccontò a Gezabele tutto ciò che Elia aveva fatto e come aveva ucciso con la spada tutti i profeti.
2 Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, 'May the gods bring unnameable il s on me and worse il stoo, if by this time tomorrow I have not made your life like one of theirs!'	2 Allora Gezabele inviò ad Elia un messaggero perché gli dicesse: "Che gli dèi mi facciano questo male e aggiungano ancora quest'altro, se domani a quest'ora non avrò fatto della tua vita come della vita di ognuno di essi".
3 He was afraid and fled for his life. He came to Beersheba, a town of Judah, where he left his servant.	3 Elia ebbe paura, si alzò e se ne andò per mettersi in salvo. Arrivò a Bersabea, che si trova in Giuda, e vi lasciò il suo servo.
4 He himself went on into the desert, a day's journey, and sitting under a furze bush wished he weredead. 'Yahweh,' he said, 'I have had enough. Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.'	4 S'inoltrò quindi nel deserto camminando per tutto un giorno e andò a sedersi sotto una ginestra. Qui si augurò di morire dicendo: "Ora basta, o Signore, prendi la mia vita perché io non sono migliore dei miei antenati".
5 Then he lay down and went to sleep. Then al of a sudden an angel touched him and said, 'Get up andeat.'	5 Poi si sdraiò e s'addormentò sotto quella ginestra. Ma un angelo lo toccò e gli disse: "Lèvati e mangia!".
6 He looked round, and there at his head was a scone baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ateand drank and then lay down again.	6 Egli guardò ed ecco che vicino al capo v'era una focaccia cotta su pietre infuocate e una brocca d'acqua. Mangiò e bevve, poi tornò a sdraiarsi.
7 But the angel of Yahweh came back a second time and touched him and said, 'Get up and eat, or thejourney will be too long for you.'	7 L'angelo del Signore venne una seconda volta, lo toccò e gli disse: "Lèvati e mangia, altrimenti troppo lungo sarà per te il cammino".
8 So he got up and ate and drank, and strengthened by that food he walked for forty days and fortynights until he reached Horeb, God's mountain.	8 Di nuovo si levò, mangiò e bevve; poi, sostenuto da quel cibo, camminò per quaranta giorni e quaranta notti fino al monte di Dio, l'Oreb.
9 There he went into a cave and spent the night there. Then the word of Yahweh came to him saying,'What are you doing here, Elijah?'	9 Qui giunto, entrò nella caverna e vi passò la notte. Ed ecco che la parola del Signore gli fu rivolta in questi termini: "Che fai qui, o Elia?".
10 He replied, 'I am ful of jealous zeal for Yahweh Sabaoth, because the Israelites have abandoned yourcovenant, have torn down your altars and put your prophets to the sword. I am the only one left, and now theywant to kil me.'	10 Egli rispose: "Ardo di tanto zelo per il Signore, Dio degli eserciti, perché i figli d'Israele hanno abbandonato la tua alleanza, hanno distrutto i tuoi altari e ucciso di spada i tuoi profeti. Sono rimasto io solo, eppure essi cercano di togliermi la vita".
11 Then he was told, 'Go out and stand on the mountain before Yahweh.' For at that moment Yahwehwas going by. A mighty hurricane split the mountains and shattered the rocks before Yahweh. But Yahweh wasnot in the hurricane. And after the hurricane, an earthquake. But Yahweh was not in the earthquake.	11 Di rimando sentì dirsi: "Esci e sta' sul monte davanti al Signore". Ed ecco che il Signore passò. Ci fu un vento grande e gagliardo, tale da scuotere le montagne e spaccare le pietre, ma il Signore non era nel vento. Dopo il vento ci fu un terremoto, ma il Signore non era nel terremoto.
12 And after the earthquake, fire. But Yahweh was not in the fire. And after the fire, a light murmuring sound.	12 Dopo il terremoto ci fu un fuoco, ma il Signore non era nel fuoco. Dopo il fuoco ci fu il sussurro di una brezza leggera.
13 And when Elijah heard this, he covered his face with his cloak and went out and stood at the entranceof the cave. Then a voice came to him, which said, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?'	13 Non appena sentì questo, Elia si coprì la faccia con il mantello, uscì e si fermò all'ingresso della caverna. Ed ecco una voce che gli diceva: "Che fai qui, o Elia?".
14 He replied, 'I am ful of jealous zeal for Yahweh, God Sabaoth, because the Israelites haveabandoned your covenant, have torn down your altars and put your prophets to the sword. I am the only one leftand now they want to kil me.'	14 Egli rispose: "Ardo di tanto zelo per il Signore, Dio degli eserciti, perché i figli d'Israele hanno abbandonato la tua alleanza, hanno distrutto i tuoi altari e ucciso di spada i tuoi profeti. Sono rimasto io solo, eppure essi cercano di togliermi la vita".
15 'Go,' Yahweh said, 'go back by the same way to the desert of Damascus. You must go and anointHazael as king of Aram.	15 Il Signore gli replicò: "Va', riprendi il tuo cammino verso il deserto di Damasco. Andrai a ungere Cazaèl come re di Aram.
16 You must anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king of Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat, of Abel-Meholah, as prophet to succeed you.	16 Poi ungerai Ieu, figlio di Nimsi, come re d'Israele; infine ungerai Eliseo, figlio di Safàt, da Abel-Mecola, come profeta al tuo posto.
17 Anyone who escapes the sword of Hazael wil be put to death by Jehu; and anyone who escapes thesword of Jehu wil be put to death by Elisha.	17 Chiunque sfuggirà alla spada di Cazaèl, sarà ucciso da Ieu, e chiunque sfuggirà alla spada di Ieu, sarà ucciso da Eliseo.
18 But I shal spare seven thousand in Israel; all the knees that have not bent before Baal, al the mouthsthat have not kissed him.'	18 Io poi mi serberò in Israele settemila uomini: tutte le ginocchia che non si sono piegate davanti a Baal e tutte le bocche che non lo hanno baciato".
19 Leaving there, he came on Elisha son of Shaphat as he was ploughing behind twelve yoke of oxen,he himself being with the twelfth. Elijah passed near to him and threw his cloak over him.	19 Elia partì di là e trovò Eliseo, figlio di Safàt, mentre arava con dodici coppie di buoi davanti a sé ed egli si trovava con la dodicesima coppia. Gli passò accanto e gli gettò il suo mantello.
20 Elisha left his oxen and ran after Elijah. 'Let me kiss my father and mother, then I wil fol ow you,' hesaid. Elijah answered, 'Go, go back; for have I done anything to you?'	20 Eliseo abbandonò i buoi e corse dietro a Elia dicendo: "Permettimi di abbracciare mio padre e mia madre e poi ti seguirò". Gli rispose: "Va' e torna, perché sai bene che cosa ti ho fatto".
21 Elisha turned away, took a yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He used the oxen's tackle for cookingthe meat, which he gave the people to eat. He then rose and, following Elijah, became his servant.	21 Tornato indietro, prese una coppia di buoi, li uccise, li fece cuocere sui loro attrezzi e li diede alla gente che ne mangiò. Poi si levò, seguì Elia e si pose al suo servizio.
