1 When Ahab told Jezebel everything that Elijah had done, and how he had put all the prophets to thesword,	1 - Acab annunziò a Jezabel tutto ciò che aveva fatto Elia e come avesse passato a fil di spada tutti i profeti.
2 Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, 'May the gods bring unnameable il s on me and worse il stoo, if by this time tomorrow I have not made your life like one of theirs!'	2 Jezabel mandò allora un messo ad Elia per dirgli: «Gli dèi mi facciano questo e mi aggiungano quello, se domani a quest'ora io non farò della tua vita quel che tu hai fatto della vita di ognuno di essi».
3 He was afraid and fled for his life. He came to Beersheba, a town of Judah, where he left his servant.	3 Temette pertanto Elia e levatosi se ne andò dove volle e giunse in Bersabee di Giuda, dove lasciò il suo servo.
4 He himself went on into the desert, a day's journey, and sitting under a furze bush wished he weredead. 'Yahweh,' he said, 'I have had enough. Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.'	4 Egli s'inoltrò poi nel deserto una giornata di cammino e andò a sedersi sotto un ginepro e desiderò di morire, dicendo: «Basta, o Signore: prendi l'anima mia; poichè io non sono migliore dei padri miei».
5 Then he lay down and went to sleep. Then al of a sudden an angel touched him and said, 'Get up andeat.'	5 Poi si sdraiò e dormì all'ombra del ginepro. Ed ecco l'angelo del Signore toccarlo e dirgli: «Levati e mangia».
6 He looked round, and there at his head was a scone baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ateand drank and then lay down again.	6 Guardò e vide presso il suo capo un pane cotto sotto la cenere e un vaso d'acqua. Mangiò allora e bevve e di nuovo si addormentò.
7 But the angel of Yahweh came back a second time and touched him and said, 'Get up and eat, or thejourney will be too long for you.'	7 Per la seconda volta tornò l'angelo del Signore a toccarlo e a dirgli: «Levati e mangia, poichè ti resta una strada lunga da fare».
8 So he got up and ate and drank, and strengthened by that food he walked for forty days and fortynights until he reached Horeb, God's mountain.	8 Essendosi allora levato, mangiò e bevve e fortificato da quel cibo, camminò per quaranta giorni e quaranta notti fino al monte di Dio, Oreb.
9 There he went into a cave and spent the night there. Then the word of Yahweh came to him saying,'What are you doing here, Elijah?'	9 Arrivato colà si pose in una spelonca ed ecco la parola di Dio rivolta a lui per dirgli: «Che cosa fai qui, Elia?».
10 He replied, 'I am ful of jealous zeal for Yahweh Sabaoth, because the Israelites have abandoned yourcovenant, have torn down your altars and put your prophets to the sword. I am the only one left, and now theywant to kil me.'	10 Ed egli rispose: «Ho spiegato tutto il mio zelo per il Signore Dio degli eserciti, poichè i figli d'Israele hanno abbandonato la tua alleanza, hanno distrutto i tuoi altari e hanno ucciso a colpi di spada i tuoi profeti; sono rimasto io solo e cercano di togliermi la vita».
11 Then he was told, 'Go out and stand on the mountain before Yahweh.' For at that moment Yahwehwas going by. A mighty hurricane split the mountains and shattered the rocks before Yahweh. But Yahweh wasnot in the hurricane. And after the hurricane, an earthquake. But Yahweh was not in the earthquake.	11 Gli disse il Signore: «Vieni fuori e tienti sulla montagna dinanzi al Signore; ed ecco il Signore passa». E vi fu un gran vento così forte da scuotere i monti e da polverizzare le pietre dinanzi al Signore; ma il Signore non era col vento. E dopo il vento, un terremoto; ma il Signore non era col terremoto.
12 And after the earthquake, fire. But Yahweh was not in the fire. And after the fire, a light murmuring sound.	12 E dopo il terremoto, un fuoco; ma il Signore non era col fuoco; e dopo il fuoco, un sussurro di un'aura leggera.
13 And when Elijah heard this, he covered his face with his cloak and went out and stood at the entranceof the cave. Then a voice came to him, which said, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?'	13 Come Elia l'ebbe udito, si coprì il volto col mantello e uscito, stette alla porta della spelonca ed ecco una voce giungere fino a lui e dirgli: «Che fai qui, Elia?». Ed egli rispose:
14 He replied, 'I am ful of jealous zeal for Yahweh, God Sabaoth, because the Israelites haveabandoned your covenant, have torn down your altars and put your prophets to the sword. I am the only one leftand now they want to kil me.'	14 «Ho spiegato tutto il mio zelo per il Signore Dio degli eserciti; poichè i figli d'Israele hanno abbandonato la tua alleanza, hanno distrutto i tuoi altari e hanno ucciso a colpi di spada tutti i profeti e sono rimasto io solo e cercano di togliermi la vita».
15 'Go,' Yahweh said, 'go back by the same way to the desert of Damascus. You must go and anointHazael as king of Aram.	15 Il Signore allora gli disse: «Va' e riprendi la tua via per il deserto fino a Damasco; quando sarai arrivato colà, ungerai re sopra la Siria Azael,
16 You must anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king of Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat, of Abel-Meholah, as prophet to succeed you.	16 e sopra Israele ungerai re Jeu figlio di Namsi. Eliseo poi figlio di Safat di Abelmeula ungerai profeta in vece tua;
17 Anyone who escapes the sword of Hazael wil be put to death by Jehu; and anyone who escapes thesword of Jehu wil be put to death by Elisha.	17 e accadrà che chiunque fuggirà la spada di Azael sarà ucciso da Jeu e chiunque sfuggirà alla spada di Jeu sarà ucciso da Eliseo.
18 But I shal spare seven thousand in Israel; all the knees that have not bent before Baal, al the mouthsthat have not kissed him.'	18 Io poi mi riserberò in Israele settemila uomini, i cui ginocchi non si sono piegati dinanzi a Baal, e ogni bocca che non l'ha adorato baciando la mano».
19 Leaving there, he came on Elisha son of Shaphat as he was ploughing behind twelve yoke of oxen,he himself being with the twelfth. Elijah passed near to him and threw his cloak over him.	19 Elia adunque partì di là e trovò Eliseo figliuolo di Safat, mentre arava con dodici coppie di buoi, ed egli stesso era uno di quelli che aravano con le dodici coppie di buoi. Venuto Elia da lui, gli gettò addosso il suo mantello;
20 Elisha left his oxen and ran after Elijah. 'Let me kiss my father and mother, then I wil fol ow you,' hesaid. Elijah answered, 'Go, go back; for have I done anything to you?'	20 ed egli abbandonati subito i buoi, corse dietro ad Elia e disse: «Lasciami, te ne prego, baciare mio padre e mia madre e poi ti seguirò». Ed egli gli disse: «Va' e torna, poichè quello che toccava a me io l'ho fatto».
21 Elisha turned away, took a yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He used the oxen's tackle for cookingthe meat, which he gave the people to eat. He then rose and, following Elijah, became his servant.	21 Dopo essersi allontanato da Elia, se ne ritornò a prendere un paio di buoi e li scannò e con l'aratro dei buoi fece cuocere le carni e le diede al popolo che ne mangiò; poi si levò, andò e si mise a seguire Elia e a servirlo.
