1 So be imitators of God, as beloved children,1 Seid also Nachahmer Gottes als seine geliebten Kinder,
2 and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma.2 und wandelt in Liebe, wie auch Christus euch liebte und sich hingab für uns als "Gabe und Opfer" (Ps 40,7), Gott "zum lieblichen Wohlgeruch" (1Mos 8,21; 3Mos 6,8).
3 Immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is fitting among holy ones,3 Von Unzucht aber und jeder Art von Unlauterkeit oder Gier werde nicht einmal gesprochen unter euch, wie es Heiligen geziemt,
4 no obscenity or silly or suggestive talk, which is out of place, but instead, thanksgiving.4 und ebensowenig von schamlosen Dingen, Albernheiten und ungeziemenden Possen - sondern besser von Danksagung.
5 Be sure of this, that no immoral or impure or greedy person, that is, an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.5 Denn das wißt und merkt euch: Kein Unzüchtiger oder Unreiner oder Habsüchtiger, was so viel wie Götzendiener ist, hat Anteil am Reiche Christi und Gottes.
6 Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the disobedient. 6 Niemand verführe euch mit leeren Sprüchen; denn um dieser Dinge willen kommt der Zorn Gottes über die Kinder des Ungehorsams.
7 So do not be associated with them.7 Werdet also nicht ihre Genossen!
8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light,8 Denn ihr wart ehedem Finsternis, nun aber seid ihr Licht im Herrn; wandelt als Kinder des Lichtes;
9 for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth.9 denn die Frucht des Lichtes zeigt sich in lauter Güte und Gerechtigkeit und Wahrheit.
10 Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.10 Prüft, was wohlgefällig ist dem Herrn,
11 Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them,11 und habt nichts gemein mit den unfruchtbaren Werken der Finsternis, bringt sie vielmehr ans Licht!
12 for it is shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret;12 Denn was von ihnen heimlich geschieht, davon auch nur zu reden, ist beschämend.
13 but everything exposed by the light becomes visible,13 Alles aber, was ans Licht gebracht wird, wird vom Lichte erhellt; denn alles, was erhellt wird, ist Licht.
14 for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says: "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light." 14 Darum heißt es: "Wach auf, der du schläfst, von den Toten steh auf, und hell wird erstrahlen dir Christus."
15 Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise,15 Seid also mit Sorgfalt bedacht, wie ihr wandelt - nicht wie Unweise,
16 making the most of the opportunity, because the days are evil.16 sondern wie Weise. Geht wählerisch um mit der Zeit; denn die Tage sind böse.
17 Therefore, do not continue in ignorance, but try to understand what is the will of the Lord.17 Seid daher nicht unverständig, sondern versteht, was der Wille des Herrn ist!
18 And do not get drunk on wine, in which lies debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,18 Berauscht euch nicht mit Wein; in ihm liegt Liederlichkeit; sondern seid erfüllt von Geist,
19 addressing one another (in) psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts,19 und sprecht zueinander in Psalmen und Hymnen und geistlichen Liedern, und dem Herrn lobsingt und jubiliert in euren Herzen!
20 giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.20 Sagt allezeit und für alles Dank im Namen unseres Herrn Jesus Christus vor Gott, dem Vater,
21 Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ. 21 und seid gefügig einander in der Furcht Christi!
22 Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord.22 Die Frauen seien ihren Männern untertan wie dem Herrn;
23 For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body.23 denn der Mann ist das Haupt der Frau, wie auch Christus das Haupt ist der Kirche, er, als Erretter des Leibes.
24 As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything.24 Wie aber die Kirche Christus untertan ist, so seien es auch die Frauen ihren Männern in allem.
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her25 Männer, liebt eure Frauen, wie auch Christus die Kirche liebte und sich hingab für sie,
26 to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word,26 um sie heilig und rein zu machen durch das Bad des Wassers kraft des Wortes
27 that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.27 und so für sich herrlich zu gestalten die Kirche, ohne Flecken oder Falten oder etwas dergleichen, sondern daß sie heilig sei und ohne Makel.
28 So (also) husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.28 So sollen auch die Männer ihre Frauen lieben wie ihren eigenen Leib. Wer seine Frau liebt, liebt sich selbst.
29 For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church,29 Denn niemand hat je sein eigenes Fleisch gehaßt, sondern er nährt und pflegt es wie auch Christus die Kirche.
30 because we are members of his body.30 Denn Glieder sind wir seines Leibes [, von seinem Fleisch und von seinem Gebein].
31 "For this reason a man shall leave (his) father and (his) mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh."31 "Darum wird der Mann Vater und Mutter verlassen und seiner Frau anhangen, und die zwei werden zu einem Fleisch" (1Mos 2,24).
32 This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.32 Dieses Geheimnis ist groß; ich deute es im Hinblick auf Christus und die Kirche.
33 In any case, each one of you should love his wife as himself, and the wife should respect her husband.33 So liebe denn auch von euch ein jeder seine Frau wie sich selbst; die Frau aber stehe in Ehrfurcht zum Manne.
