For the leader. A maskil of the Korahites.1 Unto the end. For those who will be changed. To the sons of Korah, toward understanding. A Canticle for the Beloved.
O God, we have heard with our own ears; our ancestors have told us The deeds you did in their days, with your own hand in days of old:2 My heart has uttered a good word. I speak of my works to the king. My tongue is like the pen of a scribe who writes quickly.
You rooted out nations to plant them, crushed peoples to make room for them.3 You are a brilliant form before the sons of men. Grace has been poured freely into your lips. Because of this, God has blessed you in eternity.
Not with their own swords did they conquer the land, nor did their own arms bring victory; It was your right hand, your own arm, the light of your face for you favored them.4 Fasten your sword to your thigh, O most powerful one.
You are my king and my God, who bestows victories on Jacob.5 With your splendor and your excellence extended, proceed prosperously, and reign for the sake of truth and meekness and justice, and so will your right hand lead you wondrously.
Through you we batter our foes; through your name, trample our adversaries.6 Your arrows are sharp; the people will fall under you, with the hearts of the enemies of the king.
Not in my bow do I trust, nor does my sword bring me victory.7 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of true aim.
You have brought us victory over our enemies, shamed those who hate us.8 You have loved justice and hated iniquity. Because of this, God, your God, has anointed you, before your co-heirs, with the oil of gladness.
In God we have boasted all the day long; your name we will praise forever. Selah9 Myrrh and balsam and cinnamon perfume your garments, from the houses of ivory. From these, they have delighted you:
But now you have rejected and disgraced us; you do not march out with our armies.10 the daughters of kings in your honor. The queen assisted at your right hand, in clothing of gold, encircled with diversity.
You make us retreat before the foe; those who hate us plunder us at will.11 Listen, daughter, and see, and incline your ear. And forget your people and your father’s house.
You hand us over like sheep to be slaughtered, scatter us among the nations.12 And the king will desire your beauty. For he is the Lord your God, and they will adore him.
You sell your people for nothing; you make no profit from their sale.13 And the daughters of Tyre will entreat your countenance with gifts: all the rich men of the people.
You make us the reproach of our neighbors, the mockery and scorn of those around us.14 All the glory of the daughter of its king is inside, in golden fringes,
You make us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us.15 clothed all around with diversities. After her, virgins will be led to the king. Her neighbors will be brought to you.
All day long my disgrace is before me; shame has covered my face16 They will be brought with gladness and exultation. They will be led into the temple of the king.
At the sound of those who taunt and revile, at the sight of the spiteful enemy.17 For your fathers, sons have been born to you. You will establish them as leaders over all the earth.
All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, nor been disloyal to your covenant.18 They will remember your name always, for generation after generation. Because of this, people will confess to you in eternity, even forever and ever.
Our hearts have not turned back, nor have our steps strayed from your path.
Yet you have left us crushed, desolate in a place of jackals; you have covered us with darkness.
If we had forgotten the name of our God, stretched out our hands to another god,
Would not God have discovered this, God who knows the secrets of the heart?
For you we are slain all the day long, considered only as sheep to be slaughtered.
Awake! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Rise up! Do not reject us forever!
Why do you hide your face; why forget our pain and misery?
We are bowed down to the ground; our bodies are pressed to the earth.
Rise up, help us! Redeem us as your love demands.
