For the leader. A maskil of the Korahites. | 1 [For the choirmaster Of the sons of Korah Poem] God, we have heard for ourselves, our ancestorshave told us, of the deeds you did in their days, in days of old, |
O God, we have heard with our own ears; our ancestors have told us The deeds you did in their days, with your own hand in days of old: | 2 by your hand. To establish them in the land you drove out nations, to make room for them you harriedpeoples. |
You rooted out nations to plant them, crushed peoples to make room for them. | 3 It was not their own sword that won the land, nor their own arms which made them victorious, but yourhand it was and your arm, and the light of your presence, for you loved them. |
Not with their own swords did they conquer the land, nor did their own arms bring victory; It was your right hand, your own arm, the light of your face for you favored them. | 4 You are my king, my God, who decreed Jacob's victories; |
You are my king and my God, who bestows victories on Jacob. | 5 through you we conquered our opponents, in your name we trampled down those who rose up againstus. |
Through you we batter our foes; through your name, trample our adversaries. | 6 For my trust was not in my bow, my victory was not won by my sword; |
Not in my bow do I trust, nor does my sword bring me victory. | 7 it was you who saved us from our opponents, you who put to shame those who hate us. |
You have brought us victory over our enemies, shamed those who hate us. | 8 Our boast was always of God, we praised your name without ceasing.Pause |
In God we have boasted all the day long; your name we will praise forever. Selah | 9 Yet now you have abandoned and humiliated us, you no longer take the field with our armies, |
But now you have rejected and disgraced us; you do not march out with our armies. | 10 you leave us to fall back before the enemy, those who hate us plunder us at wil . |
You make us retreat before the foe; those who hate us plunder us at will. | 11 You hand us over like sheep for slaughter, you scatter us among the nations, |
You hand us over like sheep to be slaughtered, scatter us among the nations. | 12 you sell your people for a trifle and make no profit on the sale. |
You sell your people for nothing; you make no profit from their sale. | 13 You make us the butt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those around us, |
You make us the reproach of our neighbors, the mockery and scorn of those around us. | 14 you make us a by-word among nations, other peoples shake their heads over us. |
You make us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us. | 15 Al day long I brood on my disgrace, the shame written clear on my face, |
All day long my disgrace is before me; shame has covered my face | 16 from the sound of insult and abuse, from the sight of hatred and vengefulness. |
At the sound of those who taunt and revile, at the sight of the spiteful enemy. | 17 Al this has befal en us though we had not forgotten you, nor been disloyal to your covenant, |
All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, nor been disloyal to your covenant. | 18 our hearts never turning away, our feet never straying from your path. |
Our hearts have not turned back, nor have our steps strayed from your path. | 19 Yet you have crushed us in the place where jackals live, and immersed us in shadow dark as death. |
Yet you have left us crushed, desolate in a place of jackals; you have covered us with darkness. | 20 Had we forgotten the name of our God and stretched out our hands to a foreign god, |
If we had forgotten the name of our God, stretched out our hands to another god, | 21 would not God have found this out, for he knows the secrets of the heart? |
Would not God have discovered this, God who knows the secrets of the heart? | 22 For your sake we are being massacred all day long, treated as sheep to be slaughtered. |
For you we are slain all the day long, considered only as sheep to be slaughtered. | 23 Wake, Lord! Why are you asleep? Awake! Do not abandon us for good. |
Awake! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Rise up! Do not reject us forever! | 24 Why do you turn your face away, forgetting that we are poor and harrassed? |
Why do you hide your face; why forget our pain and misery? | 25 For we are bowed down to the dust, and lie prone on the ground. |
We are bowed down to the ground; our bodies are pressed to the earth. | 26 Arise! Come to our help! Ransom us, as your faithful love demands. |
Rise up, help us! Redeem us as your love demands. |
