For the leader. A psalm of David. | 1 Unto the end, a psalm for David. |
O God, whom I praise, do not be silent, for wicked and treacherous mouths attack me. They speak against me with lying tongues; | 2 O God, be not thou silent in thy praise: for the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful man is opened against me. |
with hateful words they surround me, attacking me without cause. | 3 They have spoken against with deceitful tongues; and they have compassed me about with words of hatred; and have fought against me without cause. |
In return for my love they slander me, even though I prayed for them. | 4 Instead of making me a return of love, they detracted me: but I gave myself to prayer. |
They repay me evil for good, hatred for my love. My enemies say of me: | 5 And they repaid me evil for good: and hatred for my love. |
"Find a lying witness, an accuser to stand by his right hand, | 6 Set thou the sinner over him: and may the devil stand at his right hand. |
That he may be judged and found guilty, that his plea may be in vain. | 7 When he is judged, may he go out condemned; and may his prayer be turned to sin. |
May his days be few; may another take his office. | 8 May his days be few: and his bishopric let another take. |
May his children be fatherless, his wife, a widow. | 9 May his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. |
May his children be vagrant beggars, driven from their hovels. | 10 Let his children be carried about vagabonds, and beg; and let them be cast out of their dwellings. |
May the usurer snare all he owns, strangers plunder all he earns. | 11 May the userer search all his substance: and let strangers plunder his labours. |
May no one treat him kindly or pity his fatherless children. | 12 May there be none to help him: nor none to pity his fatherless offspring. |
May his posterity be destroyed, his name cease in the next generation. | 13 May his posterity be cut off; in one generation may his name be blotted out. |
May the LORD remember his fathers' guilt; his mother's sin not be canceled. | 14 May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered in the sight of the Lord: and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. |
May their guilt be always before the LORD, till their memory is banished from the earth, | 15 May they be before the lord continually, and let the memory of them perish from the earth: |
For he did not remember to show kindness, but hounded the wretched poor and brought death to the brokenhearted. | 16 because he remembered not to show mercy, |
He loved cursing; may it come upon him; he hated blessing; may none come to him. | 17 But persecuted the poor man and the beggar; and the broken in heart, to put him to death. |
May cursing clothe him like a robe; may it enter his belly like water, seep into his bones like oil. | 18 And he loved cursing, and it shall come unto him: and he would not have blessing, and it shall be far from him. And he put on cursing, like a garment: and it went in like water into his entrails, and like oil in his bones. |
May it be near as the clothes he wears, as the belt always around him." | 19 May it be unto him like a garment which covereth him; and like a girdle with which he is girded continually. |
May the LORD bring all this upon my accusers, upon those who speak evil against me. | 20 This is the work of them who detract me before the Lord; and who speak evils against my soul. |
But you, LORD, my God, deal kindly with me for your name's sake; in your great mercy rescue me. | 21 But thou, O Lord, do with for thy names sake: because thy mercy is sweet. Do thou deliver me. |
For I am sorely in need; my heart is pierced within me. | 22 for I am poor and needy, and my heart is troubled within me. |
Like a lengthening shadow I near my end, all but swept away like the locust. | 23 I am taken away like the shadow when it declineth: and I am shaken off as locusts. |
My knees totter from fasting; my flesh has wasted away. | 24 My knees are weakened through fasting: and my flesh is changed for oil. |
I have become a mockery to them; when they see me, they shake their heads. | 25 And I am become a reproach to them: they saw me and they shaked their heads, |
Help me, LORD, my God; save me in your kindness. | 26 Help me, O Lord my God; save me according to thy mercy. |
Make them know this is your hand, that you, LORD, have acted. | 27 And let them know that this is thy hand: and that thou, O Lord, hast done it. |
Though they curse, may you bless; shame my foes, that your servant may rejoice. | 28 They will curse and thou will bless: let them that rise up against me be confounded: but thy servant shall rejoice. |
Clothe my accusers with disgrace; make them wear shame like a mantle. | 29 Let them that detract me be clothed with shame: and let them be covered with the their confusion as with a double cloak. |
I will give fervent thanks to the LORD; before all I will praise my God. | 30 I will give great thanks to the Lord with my mouth: and in the midst of many I will praise him. |
For God stands at the right hand of the poor to defend them against unjust accusers. | 31 Because he hath stood at the right hand of the poor, to save my soul from persecutors |
