Genesis 11

The whole world spoke the same language, using the same words.1 Now the earth was of one language and of the same speech.
While men were migrating in the east, they came upon a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.2 And when they were advancing from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt in it.
They said to one another, "Come, let us mold bricks and harden them with fire." They used bricks for stone, and bitumen for mortar.3 And each one said to his neighbor, “Come, let us make bricks, and bake them with fire.” And they had bricks instead of stones, and pitch instead of mortar.
Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky, and so make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered all over the earth."4 And they said: “Come, let us make a city and a tower, so that its height may reach to heaven. And let us make our name famous before we are divided into all the lands.”
LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men had built.5 Then the Lord descended to see the city and the tower, which the sons of Adam were building.
Then the LORD said: "If now, while they are one people, all speaking the same language, they have started to do this, nothing will later stop them from doing whatever they presume to do.6 And he said: “Behold, the people are united, and all have one tongue. And since they have begun to do this, they will not desist from their plans, until they have completed their work.
Let us then go down and there confuse their language, so that one will not understand what another says."7 Therefore, come, let us descend, and in that place confound their tongue, so that they may not listen, each one to the voice of his neighbor.”
Thus the LORD scattered them from there all over the earth, and they stopped building the city.8 And so the Lord divided them from that place into all the lands, and they ceased to build the city.
That is why it was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the speech of all the world. It was from that place that he scattered them all over the earth.9 And for this reason, its name was called ‘Babel,’ because in that place the language of the whole earth became confused. And from then on, the Lord scattered them across the face of every region.
This is the record of the descendants of Shem. When Shem was one hundred years old, he became the father of Arpachshad, two years after the flood.10 These are the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old when he conceived Arphaxad, two years after the great flood.
Shem lived five hundred years after the birth of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters.11 And after he conceived Arphaxad, Shem lived for five hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
When Arpachshad was thirty-five years old, he became the father of Shelah.12 Next, Arphaxad lived for thirty-five years, and then he conceived Shelah.
Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after the birth of Shelah, and he had other sons and daughters.13 And after he conceived Shelah, Arphaxad lived for three hundred and three years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
When Shelah was thirty years old, he became the father of Eber.14 Likewise, Shelah lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Eber.
Shelah lived four hundred and three years after the birth of Eber, and he had other sons and daughters.15 And after he conceived Eber, Shelah lived for four hundred and three years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
When Eber was thirty-four years old, he became the father of Peleg.16 Then Eber lived for thirty-four years, and he conceived Peleg.
Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after the birth of Peleg, and he had other sons and daughters.17 And after he conceived Peleg, Eber lived for four hundred and thirty years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
When Peleg was thirty years old, he became the father of Reu.18 Likewise, Peleg lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Reu.
Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after the birth of Reu, and he had other sons and daughters.19 And after he conceived Reu, Peleg lived for two hundred and nine years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
When Reu was thirty-two years old, he became the father of Serug.20 Then Reu lived for thirty-two years, and then he conceived Serug.
Reu lived two hundred and seven years after the birth of Serug, and he had other sons and daughters.21 Likewise, after he conceived Serug, Reu lived for two hundred and seven years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
When Serug was thirty years old, he became the father of Nahor.22 In truth, Serug lived for thirty years, and then he conceived Nahor.
Serug lived two hundred years after the birth of Nahor, and he had other sons and daughters.23 And after he conceived Nahor, Serug lived for two hundred years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
When Nahor was twenty-nine years old, he became the father of Terah.24 And so Nahor lived for twenty-nine years, and then he conceived Terah.
Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after the birth of Terah, and he had other sons and daughters.25 And after he conceived Terah, Nahor lived for one hundred and nineteen years, and he conceived sons and daughters.
When Terah was seventy years old, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.26 And Terah lived for seventy years, and then he conceived Abram, and Nahor, and Haran.
This is the record of the descendants of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran became the father of Lot.27 And these are the generations of Terah. Terah conceived Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Next Haran conceived Lot.
Haran died before his father Terah, in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans.28 And Haran died before his father Terah, in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
Abram and Nahor took wives; the name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah, daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.29 Then Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai. And the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.
Sarai was barren; she had no child.30 But Sarai was barren and had no children.
Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot, son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and brought them out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to go to the land of Canaan. But when they reached Haran, they settled there.31 And so Terah took his son Abram, and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and he led them away from Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan. And they approached as far as Haran, and they dwelt there.
The lifetime of Terah was two hundred and five years; then Terah died in Haran.32 And the days of Terah that passed were two hundred and five years, and then he died in Haran.
