1 The whole world spoke the same language, using the same words.	1 A föld akkor még egy ajkú és egyazon beszédű volt.
2 While men were migrating in the east, they came upon a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.	2 Amikor azonban Keletről elköltöztek, Sineár földjén egy mezőségre bukkantak, és ott letelepedtek.
3 They said to one another, "Come, let us mold bricks and harden them with fire." They used bricks for stone, and bitumen for mortar.	3 Azt mondták egymásnak: »Gyertek, vessünk téglát, és égessük ki tűzben!« Aztán felhasználták a téglát építőkőnek, az aszfaltot meg habarcsnak,
4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky, and so make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered all over the earth."	4 és azt mondták: »Gyertek, építsünk magunknak várost és tornyot! Érjen a teteje az égig, hogy híressé tegyük nevünket, és szét ne szóródjunk az egész földre!«
5 LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men had built.	5 Az Úr ekkor leszállt, hogy megnézze a várost és a tornyot, amelyet építettek az ember fiai,
6 Then the LORD said: "If now, while they are one people, all speaking the same language, they have started to do this, nothing will later stop them from doing whatever they presume to do.	6 és azt mondta az Úr: »Íme, egy ez a nép, és egyajkú az egész: ezzel az alkotással kezdik, s ezentúl nem fognak elállni szándékaiktól, amíg meg nem valósítják azokat tettekkel.
7 Let us then go down and there confuse their language, so that one will not understand what another says."	7 Gyertek tehát, szálljunk alá, és zavarjuk ott össze a nyelvüket, hogy ne értsék meg egymás szavát!«
8 Thus the LORD scattered them from there all over the earth, and they stopped building the city.	8 Így el is szélesztette őket onnan az Úr az egész földre, s ők abbahagyták a város építését.
9 That is why it was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the speech of all the world. It was from that place that he scattered them all over the earth.	9 Azért nevezték el tehát azt Bábelnek, mert ott zavarodott össze az egész föld nyelve, s onnan szélesztette el őket az Úr a föld egész színére.
10 This is the record of the descendants of Shem. When Shem was one hundred years old, he became the father of Arpachshad, two years after the flood.	10 Szem nemzetsége a következő: Szem százesztendős volt, amikor Arfaxádot nemzette, két esztendővel a vízözön után.
11 Shem lived five hundred years after the birth of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters.	11 Szem azután, hogy Arfaxádot nemzette, ötszáz esztendeig élt, és nemzett még fiakat meg leányokat.
12 When Arpachshad was thirty-five years old, he became the father of Shelah.	12 Amikor aztán Arfaxád harmincöt esztendős lett, nemzette Selahot.
13 Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after the birth of Shelah, and he had other sons and daughters.	13 Arfaxád azután, hogy Selahot nemzette, négyszázhárom esztendeig élt, és nemzett még fiakat meg leányokat.
14 When Shelah was thirty years old, he became the father of Eber.	14 Amikor aztán Selah harmincesztendős volt, nemzette Hébert.
15 Shelah lived four hundred and three years after the birth of Eber, and he had other sons and daughters.	15 Selah azután, hogy Hébert nemzette, négyszázhárom esztendeig élt, és nemzett még fiakat meg leányokat.
16 When Eber was thirty-four years old, he became the father of Peleg.	16 Amikor aztán Héber harmincnégy esztendős volt, nemzette Peleget.
17 Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after the birth of Peleg, and he had other sons and daughters.	17 Héber azután, hogy Peleget nemzette, négyszázharminc esztendeig élt, és nemzett még fiakat meg leányokat.
18 When Peleg was thirty years old, he became the father of Reu.	18 Amikor aztán Peleg harmincesztendős volt, nemzette Reut.
19 Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after the birth of Reu, and he had other sons and daughters.	19 Peleg azután, hogy Reut nemzette, kétszázkilenc esztendeig élt, és nemzett még fiakat meg leányokat.
20 When Reu was thirty-two years old, he became the father of Serug.	20 Amikor aztán Reu harminckét esztendős volt, nemzette Szerugot.
21 Reu lived two hundred and seven years after the birth of Serug, and he had other sons and daughters.	21 Reu azután, hogy Szerugot nemzette, kétszázhét esztendeig élt, és nemzett még fiakat meg leányokat.
22 When Serug was thirty years old, he became the father of Nahor.	22 Amikor aztán Szerug harmincesztendős volt, nemzette Náchort.
23 Serug lived two hundred years after the birth of Nahor, and he had other sons and daughters.	23 Szerug azután, hogy Náchort nemzette, kétszáz esztendeig élt, és nemzett még fiakat meg leányokat.
24 When Nahor was twenty-nine years old, he became the father of Terah.	24 Amikor aztán Náchor huszonkilenc éves volt, nemzette Terahot.
25 Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after the birth of Terah, and he had other sons and daughters.	25 Náchor az után, hogy Terahot nemzette, száztizenkilenc esztendeig élt, és nemzett még fiakat meg leányokat.
26 When Terah was seventy years old, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.	26 Amikor aztán Terah hetvenesztendős volt, nemzette Ábrámot, Náchort és Háránt.
27 This is the record of the descendants of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran became the father of Lot.	27 Terah nemzetsége pedig a következő. Terah nemzette Ábrámot, Náchort és Háránt, Hárán pedig nemzette Lótot.
28 Haran died before his father Terah, in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans.	28 De Hárán meghalt apja, Terah színe előtt a szülőföldjén, a káldeai Úrban.
29 Abram and Nahor took wives; the name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah, daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.	29 Ábrám és Náchor pedig feleséget vettek maguknak: Ábrám feleségének a neve Sárai volt, Náchor feleségének a neve pedig Melka. Ez Háránnak, Melka apjának és Jeszka apjának volt a lánya.
30 Sarai was barren; she had no child.	30 Sárai azonban meddő volt, s így nem volt gyermeke.
31 Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot, son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and brought them out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to go to the land of Canaan. But when they reached Haran, they settled there.	31 Terah azután fogta Ábrámot, a fiát, és Lótot, Háránnak, a fiának a fiát, valamint Sárait, a menyét, fiának, Ábrámnak a feleségét, és kivezette őket a káldeai Úrból, hogy Kánaán földjére menjenek. El is jutottak Háránig, és ott megtelepedtek.
32 The lifetime of Terah was two hundred and five years; then Terah died in Haran.	32 És Terah kétszázöt esztendős volt, amikor meghalt Háránban.
