1 The whole world spoke the same language, using the same words.	1 Erat autem universa terra labii unius et sermonum eo rundem.
2 While men were migrating in the east, they came upon a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.	2 Cumque proficiscerentur de oriente, invenerunt campum in terra Sennaar et habitaverunt in eo.
3 They said to one another, "Come, let us mold bricks and harden them with fire." They used bricks for stone, and bitumen for mortar.	3 Dixitque alter ad proximum suum: “Venite, faciamus lateres et coquamus eos igni”. Habueruntque lateres pro saxis et bitumen pro caemento.
4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky, and so make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered all over the earth."	4 Et dixerunt: “Venite, faciamus nobis civitatem et turrim, cuius culmen pertingat ad caelum, et faciamus nobis nomen, ne dividamur super faciem universae terrae”.
5 LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men had built.	5 Descendit autem Dominus, ut videret civitatem et turrim, quam aedificaverunt filii hominum,
6 Then the LORD said: "If now, while they are one people, all speaking the same language, they have started to do this, nothing will later stop them from doing whatever they presume to do.	6 et dixit Dominus: “Ecce unus est populus et unum labium omnibus; et hoc est initium operationis eorum, nec eis erit deinceps difficile, quidquid cogitaverint facere.
7 Let us then go down and there confuse their language, so that one will not understand what another says."	7 Venite igitur, descendamus et confundamus ibi linguam eorum, ut non intellegat unusquisque vocem proximi sui”.
8 Thus the LORD scattered them from there all over the earth, and they stopped building the city.	8 Atque ita divisit eos Dominus ex illo loco super faciem universae terrae, et cessaverunt aedificare civitatem.
9 That is why it was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the speech of all the world. It was from that place that he scattered them all over the earth.	9 Et idcirco vocatum est nomen eius Babel, quia ibi confusum est labium universae terrae, et inde dispersit eos Dominus super faciem universae terrae.
10 This is the record of the descendants of Shem. When Shem was one hundred years old, he became the father of Arpachshad, two years after the flood.	10 Hae sunt generationes Sem. Sem centum erat annorum, quando genuit Arphaxad biennio post diluvium;
11 Shem lived five hundred years after the birth of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters.	11 vixitque Sem, postquam genuit Arphaxad, quingentos annos et genuit filios et filias.
12 When Arpachshad was thirty-five years old, he became the father of Shelah.	12 Porro Arphaxad vixit triginta quinque annos et genuit Sala.
13 Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after the birth of Shelah, and he had other sons and daughters.	13 Vixitque Arphaxad, postquam genuit Sala, quadringentis tribus annis et genuit filios et filias.
14 When Shelah was thirty years old, he became the father of Eber.	14 Sala quoque vixit triginta annis et genuit Heber.
15 Shelah lived four hundred and three years after the birth of Eber, and he had other sons and daughters.	15 Vixitque Sala, postquam genuit Heber, quadringentis tribus annis et genuit filios et filias.
16 When Eber was thirty-four years old, he became the father of Peleg.	16 Vixit autem Heber triginta quattuor annis et genuit Phaleg.
17 Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after the birth of Peleg, and he had other sons and daughters.	17 Et vixit Heber, postquam genuit Phaleg, quadringentis triginta annis et genuit filios et filias.
18 When Peleg was thirty years old, he became the father of Reu.	18 Vixit quoque Phaleg triginta annis et genuit Reu.
19 Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after the birth of Reu, and he had other sons and daughters.	19 Vixitque Phaleg, postquam genuit Reu, ducentis novem annis et genuit filios et filias.
20 When Reu was thirty-two years old, he became the father of Serug.	20 Vixit autem Reu triginta duobus annis et genuit Seruch.
21 Reu lived two hundred and seven years after the birth of Serug, and he had other sons and daughters.	21 Vixitque Reu, postquam genuit Seruch, ducentis septem annis et genuit filios et filias.
22 When Serug was thirty years old, he became the father of Nahor.	22 Vixit vero Seruch triginta annis et genuit Nachor.
23 Serug lived two hundred years after the birth of Nahor, and he had other sons and daughters.	23 Vixitque Seruch, postquam genuit Nachor, ducentos annos et genuit filios et filias.
24 When Nahor was twenty-nine years old, he became the father of Terah.	24 Vixit autem Nachor viginti novem annis et genuit Thare.
25 Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after the birth of Terah, and he had other sons and daughters.	25 Vixitque Nachor, postquam genuit Thare, centum decem et novem annos et genuit filios et filias.
26 When Terah was seventy years old, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.	26 Vixitque Thare septuaginta annis et genuit Abram, Nachor et Aran.
27 This is the record of the descendants of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran became the father of Lot.	27 Hae sunt autem generationes Thare. Thare genuit Abram, Nachor et Aran. Porro Aran genuit Lot;
28 Haran died before his father Terah, in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans.	28 mortuusque est Aran ante Thare patrem suum in terra nativitatis suae in Ur Chaldaeorum.
29 Abram and Nahor took wives; the name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah, daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.	29 Duxerunt autem Abram et Nachor uxores: nomen uxoris Abram Sarai, et nomen uxoris Nachor Melcha, filia Aran patris Melchae et patris Ieschae.
30 Sarai was barren; she had no child.	30 Erat autem Sarai sterilis nec habebat liberos.
31 Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot, son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and brought them out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to go to the land of Canaan. But when they reached Haran, they settled there.	31 Tulitque Thare Abram filium suum et Lot filium Aran filium filii sui et Sarai nurum suam, uxorem Abram filii sui, et eduxit eos de Ur Chaldaeorum, ut irent in terram Chanaan. Veneruntque usque Charran et habitaverunt ibi.
32 The lifetime of Terah was two hundred and five years; then Terah died in Haran.	32 Et facti sunt dies Thare ducentorum quinque annorum, et mortuus est in Charran.
