Genesis 11

NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
The whole world spoke the same language, using the same words.1 And the earth was of one tongue, and of the same speech.
While men were migrating in the east, they came upon a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.2 And when they removed from the east, they found a plain in the land of Sennaar, and dwelt in it.
They said to one another, "Come, let us mold bricks and harden them with fire." They used bricks for stone, and bitumen for mortar.3 And each one said to his neighbour: Come, let us make brick, and bake them of stones, and slime instead of mortar.
Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky, and so make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered all over the earth."4 And they said: Come, let us make a city and a tower, the top whereof may reach to heaven: and let us make our name famous before we be scattered abroad into all lands.
LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men had built.5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of Adam were building.
Then the LORD said: "If now, while they are one people, all speaking the same language, they have started to do this, nothing will later stop them from doing whatever they presume to do.6 And he said: Behold, it is one people, and all have one tongue: and they have begun to do this, neither will they leave off from their designs, till they accomplish them in deed.
Let us then go down and there confuse their language, so that one will not understand what another says."7 Come ye, therefore, let us go down, and there may not understand one another's speech.
Thus the LORD scattered them from there all over the earth, and they stopped building the city.8 And so the Lord scattered them from that place into all lands, and they ceased to build the city.
That is why it was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the speech of all the world. It was from that place that he scattered them all over the earth.9 And therefore the name thereof was called Babel, because there the language of the whole earth was confounded: and from thence the Lord scattered them abroad upon the face of all countries.
This is the record of the descendants of Shem. When Shem was one hundred years old, he became the father of Arpachshad, two years after the flood.10 These are the generations of Sem: Sem was a hundred years old when he begot Arphaxad, two years old when he begot Arphaxad, two years after the flood.
Shem lived five hundred years after the birth of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters.11 And Sem lived after he begot Arphaxad, five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.
When Arpachshad was thirty-five years old, he became the father of Shelah.12 And Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, and begot Sale.
Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after the birth of Shelah, and he had other sons and daughters.13 And Arphaxad lived after he begot Sale, three hundred and three years; and begot sons and daughters.
When Shelah was thirty years old, he became the father of Eber.14 Sale also lived thirty years, and begot Heber.
Shelah lived four hundred and three years after the birth of Eber, and he had other sons and daughters.15 And Sale lived after he begot Heber, four hundred and three years; and begot sons and daughters.
When Eber was thirty-four years old, he became the father of Peleg.16 And Heber lived thirty-four years, and begot Phaleg.
Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after the birth of Peleg, and he had other sons and daughters.17 And Heber lived after he begot Phaleg, four hundred and thirty years: and begot sons and daughters.
When Peleg was thirty years old, he became the father of Reu.18 Phaleg also lived thirty years, and begot Reu.
Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after the birth of Reu, and he had other sons and daughters.19 And Phaleg lived after he begot Reu, two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.
When Reu was thirty-two years old, he became the father of Serug.20 And Reu lived thirty-two years, and begot Sarug.
Reu lived two hundred and seven years after the birth of Serug, and he had other sons and daughters.21 And Reu lived after he begot Sarug, two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.
When Serug was thirty years old, he became the father of Nahor.22 And Sarug lived thirty years, and begot Nachor.
Serug lived two hundred years after the birth of Nahor, and he had other sons and daughters.23 And Sarug lived after he begot Nachor, two hundred years: and begot sons and daughters.
When Nahor was twenty-nine years old, he became the father of Terah.24 And Nachor lived nine and twenty years, and begot Thare.
Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after the birth of Terah, and he had other sons and daughters.25 And Nachor lived after he begot Thare, a hundred and nineteen years: and begot sons and daughters.
When Terah was seventy years old, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.26 And Thare lived seventy years, and begot Abram, and Nachor, and Aran.
This is the record of the descendants of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran became the father of Lot.27 And these are the generations of Thare: Thare begot Abram, Nachor, and Aran. And Aran begot Lot.
Haran died before his father Terah, in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans.28 And Aran died before Thare his father, in the land of his nativity in Ur of the Chaldees.
Abram and Nahor took wives; the name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah, daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.29 And Abram and Nachor married wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai: and the name of Nachor's wife, Melcha, the daughter of Aran, father of Melcha, and father of Jescha.
Sarai was barren; she had no child.30 And Sarai was barren, and had no children.
Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot, son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and brought them out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to go to the land of Canaan. But when they reached Haran, they settled there.31 And Thare took Abram, his son, and Lot the son of Aran, his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, the wife of Abram his son, and brought them out of Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Chanaan: and they came as far as Haran, and dwelt there.
The lifetime of Terah was two hundred and five years; then Terah died in Haran.32 And the days of Thare were tow hundred and five years, and he died in Haran.
