KING JAMES BIBLE | NEW JERUSALEM |
---|---|
Remember, O LORD, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach. | 1 Yahweh, remember what has happened to us; consider, and see our degradation. |
Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens. | 2 Our heritage has passed to strangers, our homes to foreigners. |
We are orphans and fatherless, our mothers are as widows. | 3 We are orphans, we are fatherless; our mothers are like widows. |
We have drunken our water for money; our wood is sold unto us. | 4 We have to buy our own water to drink, our own wood we can get only at a price. |
Our necks are under persecution: we labour, and have no rest. | 5 The yoke is on our necks; we are persecuted; exhausted we are, al owed no rest. |
We have given the hand to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread. | 6 We made a pact with Egypt, with Assyria, to have plenty of food. |
Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities. | 7 Our ancestors sinned; they are no more, and we bear the weight of their guilt. |
Servants have ruled over us: there is none that doth deliver us out of their hand. | 8 Slaves rule us; there is no one to rescue us from their clutches. |
We gat our bread with the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness. | 9 At peril of our lives we earn our bread, by risking the sword of the desert. |
Our skin was black like an oven because of the terrible famine. | 10 Our skin is as hot as an oven, from the scorch of famine. |
They ravished the women in Zion, and the maids in the cities of Judah. | 11 The women in Zion have been raped, the young girls in the towns of Judah. |
Princes are hanged up by their hand: the faces of elders were not honoured. | 12 Princes have been hanged by their hands; the face of the old has won no respect. |
They took the young men to grind, and the children fell under the wood. | 13 Youths have been put to the mil , boys stagger under loads of wood. |
The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their musick. | 14 The elders have deserted the gateway; the young have given up their music. |
The joy of our heart is ceased; our dance is turned into mourning. | 15 Joy has vanished from our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning. |
The crown is fallen from our head: woe unto us, that we have sinned! | 16 The crown has fallen from our heads. Alas that ever we sinned! |
For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes are dim. | 17 This is why our hearts are sick; this is why our eyes are dim: |
Because of the mountain of Zion, which is desolate, the foxes walk upon it. | 18 because Mount Zion is desolate; jackals roam to and fro on it. |
Thou, O LORD, remainest for ever; thy throne from generation to generation. | 19 Yet you, Yahweh, rule from eternity; your throne endures from age to age. |
Wherefore dost thou forget us for ever, and forsake us so long time? | 20 Why do you never remember us? Why do you abandon us so long? |
Turn thou us unto thee, O LORD, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old. | 21 Make us come back to you, Yahweh, and we will come back. Restore us as we were before! |
But thou hast utterly rejected us; thou art very wroth against us. | 22 Unless you have utterly rejected us, in an anger which knows no limit. |
