Sirach 25

1 In three things I was beautified, and stood up beautiful both before God and men: the unity of brethren, the love of neighbours, a man and a wife that agree together.	1 Trois choses plaisent à mon esprit, et sont approuvées de Dieu et des hommes:
2 Three sorts of men my soul hateth, and I am greatly offended at their life: a poor man that is proud, a rich man that is a liar, and an old adulterer that doateth.	2 l'union des frères, l'amour mutuel des proches, un mari et une femme qui s'accordent bien ensemble.
3 If thou hast gathered nothing in thy youth, how canst thou find any thing in thine age?	3 Il y a trois sortes de personnes que mon âme hait, et dont la vie m'est insupportable:
4 O how comely a thing is judgment for gray hairs, and for ancient men to know counsel!	4 un pauvre superbe, un riche menteur, et un vieillard fou et insensé.
5 O how comely is the wisdom of old men, and understanding and counsel to men of honour.	5 Ce que tu n'auras point amassé dans ta jeunesse, comment le trouveras-tu dans ta vieillesse?
6 Much experience is the crown of old men, and the fear of God is their glory.	6 Qu'il est beau pour les cheveux blancs d'avoir du jugement, et pour les vieillards de savoir conseiller!
7 There be nine things which I have judged in mine heart to be happy, and the tenth I will utter with my tongue: A man that hath joy of his children; and he that liveth to see the fall of his enemy:	7 Que la sagesse sied bien aux vétérans, et l'intelligence et le conseil à ceux qui sont élevés en gloire!
8 Well is him that dwelleth with a wife of understanding, and that hath not slipped with his tongue, and that hath not served a man more unworthy than himself:	8 L'expérience consommée est la couronne des vieillards, et la crainte de Dieu est leur gloire.
9 Well is him that hath found prudence, and he that speaketh in the ears of them that will hear:	9 Neuf choses se présentent à mon esprit come très heureuses, et j'en exposerai une dixième aux hommes par mes paroles:
10 O how great is he that findeth wisdom! yet is there none above him that feareth the Lord.	10 un homme qui trouve sa joie dans ses enfants; celui qui vit et qui voit la ruine de ses ennemis.
11 But the love of the Lord passeth all things for illumination: he that holdeth it, whereto shall he be likened?	11 Heureux celui qui habite avec une femme de sens, qui n'est point tombé par sa langue, et qui n'a pas été asservi à des hommes indignes de lui.
12 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of his love: and faith is the beginning of cleaving unto him.	12 Heureux celui qui trouve un ami véritable, et qui parle de la justice à une oreille qui l'écoute.
13 [Give me] any plague, but the plague of the heart: and any wickedness, but the wickedness of a woman:	13 Combien est grand celui qui a trouvé la sagesse et la science! mais rien ne surpasse celui qui craint le Seigneur.
14 And any affliction, but the affliction from them that hate me: and any revenge, but the revenge of enemies.	14 La crainte de Dieu s'élève au-dessus de tout.
15 There is no head above the head of a serpent; and there is no wrath above the wrath of an enemy.	15 Heureux l'homme qui a reçu le don de la crainte de Dieu: à qui comparera-t-on celui qui la possède?
16 I had rather dwell with a lion and a dragon, than to keep house with a wicked woman.	16 La crainte de Dieu est le principe de son amour, et on y doit joindre inséparablement un commencement de foi.
17 The wickedness of a woman changeth her face, and darkeneth her countenance like sackcloth.	17 La tristesse du coeur est le comble de la peine, et la malignité de la femme est une malice consommée.
18 Her husband shall sit among his neighbours; and when he heareth it shall sigh bitterly.	18 Toute plaie est supportable, plutôt que la plaie du coeur;
19 All wickedness is but little to the wickedness of a woman: let the portion of a sinner fall upon her.	19 toute malice, plutôt que la malice de la femme;
20 As the climbing up a sandy way is to the feet of the aged, so is a wife full of words to a quiet man.	20 toute affliction, plutôt que celle qui vient de ceux qui nous haïssent;
21 Stumble not at the beauty of a woman, and desire her not for pleasure.	21 toute vengeance, plutôt que la vengeance des ennemis.
22 A woman, if she maintain her husband, is full of anger, impudence, and much reproach.	22 Il n'y a point de tête plus méchante que la tête du serpent,
23 A wicked woman abateth the courage, maketh an heavy countenance and a wounded heart: a woman that will not comfort her husband in distress maketh weak hands and feeble knees.	23 et il n'y a pas de colère qui dépasse la colère de la femme. Il vaut mieux demeurer avec un lion et un dragon, que d'habiter avec une méchante femme.
24 Of the woman came the beginning of sin, and through her we all die.	24 La malignité de la femme lui change le visage; elle prend un regard sombre comme un ours, et son teint devient comme un sac. Au milieu de ses proches
25 Give the water no passage; neither a wicked woman liberty to gad abroad.	25 son mari gémit, et en les entendant il soupire.
26 If she go not as thou wouldest have her, cut her off from thy flesh, and give her a bill of divorce, and let her go.	26 Toute malice est légère comparée à la malice de la femme; que le sort des pécheurs tombe sur elle!
	27 Comme une montagne sablonneuse pour les pieds d'un vieillard, telle est la femme bavarde pour un homme paisible.
	28 Ne considère point la beauté d'une femme, et ne la convoite pas à cause de ses charmes.
	29 De la femme provient la colère, l'audace et une grande confusion.
	30 Si la femme a l'autorité, elle s'élève contre son mari.
	31 La méchante femme est l'affliction du coeur, la tristesse du visage et la plaie au coeur de son mari.
	32 La femme qui ne rend pas son mari heureux est l'affaiblissement de ses mains et la débilité de ses genoux.
	33 La femme a été le principe du péché, et c'est par elle que nous mourons tous.
	34 Ne donne point à ton eau l'issue la plus légère, ni à une méchante femme la liberté de se produire au dehors.
	35 Si tu ne la conduis pas comme par la main, elle te couvrira de confusion en présence de tes ennemis.
	36 Sépare-la de ta chair, de peur qu'elle n'abuse sans cesse de toi.
