when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.1 Unto the end. The understanding of David.
Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.2 When Doeg the Edomite came and reported to Saul, David went to the house of Ahimelech.
For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.3 Why do you glory in malice, you who are powerful in iniquity?
Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.4 All day long your tongue thinks up injustice. Like a sharp razor, you have wrought deceit.
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.5 You have loved malice above goodness, and iniquity more than speaking righteousness.
Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.6 You have loved all precipitous words, you deceitful tongue.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.7 Because of this, God will destroy you in the end. He will pull you up, and he will remove you from your tabernacle and your root from the land of the living.
Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.8 The just will see and be afraid, and they will laugh over him, and say:
Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.9 “Behold the man who did not set God as his helper. But he hoped in the multitude of his riches, and so he prevailed in his emptiness.”
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.10 But I, like a fruitful olive tree in the house of God, have hoped in the mercy of God unto eternity, and forever and ever.
Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.11 I will confess to you forever, because you have accomplished it. And I will wait on your name, for it is good in the sight of your saints.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.
