Job 31

KING JAMES BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?	1 J'avais fait un pacte avec mes yeux, au point de ne fixer aucune vierge.
2 For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?	2 Or, quel partage Dieu fait-il donc de là-haut, quel lot Shaddaï assigne-t-il de son ciel?
3 Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?	3 N'est-ce pas le malheur qu'il réserve à l'injuste et l'adversité aux hommes malfaisants?
4 Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?	4 Ne voit-il pas ma conduite, ne compte-t-il point tous mes pas?
5 If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;	5 Ai-je fait route avec le mensonge, pressé le pas vers la fausseté?
6 Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.	6 Qu'il me pèse sur une balance exacte: lui, Dieu, reconnaîtra mon intégrité!
7 If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;	7 Si mes pas ont dévié du droit chemin, si mon coeur fut entraîné par mes yeux et si une souillure adhèreà mes mains,
8 Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.	8 qu'un autre mange ce que j'ai semé et que soient arrachées mes jeunes pousses!
9 If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door;	9 Si mon coeur fut séduit par une femme, si j'ai épié à la porte de mon prochain,
10 Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.	10 que ma femme se mette à moudre pour autrui, que d'autres aient commerce avec elle!
11 For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.	11 J'aurais commis là une impudicité, un crime passible de justice,
12 For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.	12 ce serait un feu qui dévore jusqu'à la Perdition et consumerait tout mon revenu.
13 If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;	13 Si j'ai méconnu les droits de mon serviteur, de ma servante, dans leurs litiges avec moi,
14 What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?	14 que ferai-je quand Dieu surgira? Lorsqu'il fera l'enquête, que répondrai-je?
15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?	15 Ne les a-t-il pas créés comme moi dans le ventre? Un même Dieu nous forma dans le sein.
16 If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;	16 Ai-je été insensible aux besoins des faibles, laissé languir les yeux de la veuve?
17 Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;	17 Ai-je mangé seul mon morceau de pain, sans le partager avec l'orphelin?
18 (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother's womb;)	18 Alors que Dieu, dès mon enfance, m'a élevé comme un père, guidé depuis le sein maternel!
19 If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;	19 Ai-je vu un miséreux sans vêtements, un pauvre sans couverture,
20 If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;	20 sans que leurs reins m'aient béni, que la toison de mes agneaux les ait réchauffés?
21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:	21 Ai-je agité la main contre un orphelin, me sachant soutenu à la Porte?
22 Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.	22 Qu'alors mon épaule se détache de ma nuque et que mon bras se rompe au coude!
23 For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.	23 Car la terreur de Dieu fondrait sur moi, je ne tiendrais pas devant sa majesté.
24 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;	24 Ai-je placé dans l'or ma confiance et dit à l'or fin: "O ma sécurité?"
25 If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;	25 Me suis-je réjoui de mes biens nombreux, des richesses acquises par mes mains?
26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;	26 A la vue du soleil dans son éclat, de la lune radieuse dans sa course,
27 And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:	27 mon coeur, en secret, s'est-il laissé séduire, pour leur envoyer de la main un baiser?
28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.	28 Ce serait encore une faute criminelle, car j'aurais renié le Dieu suprême.
29 If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:	29 Me suis-je réjoui de l'infortune de mon ennemi, ai-je exulté quand le malheur l'atteignait,
30 Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.	30 moi, qui ne permettais pas à ma langue de pécher, de réclamer sa vie dans une malédiction?
31 If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.	31 Et ne disaient-ils pas, les gens de ma tente: "Trouve-t-on quelqu'un qu'il n'ait pas rassasié de viande?"
32 The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.	32 Jamais étranger ne coucha dehors, au voyageur ma porte restait ouverte.
33 If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:	33 Ai-je dissimulé aux hommes mes transgressions, caché ma faute dans mon sein?
34 Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?	34 Ai-je eu peur de la rumeur publique, ai-je redouté le mépris des familles, et me suis-je tenu coi,n'osant franchir ma porte?
35 Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.	35 Ah! qui fera donc que l'on m'écoute? J'ai dit mon dernier mot: à Shaddaï de me répondre! Le libellequ'aura rédigé mon adversaire,
36 Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.	36 je veux le porter sur mon épaule, le ceindre comme un diadème.
37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.	37 Je lui rendrai compte de tous mes pas et je m'avancerai vers lui comme un prince.
38 If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;	38 Si ma terre crie vengeance contre moi et que ses sillons pleurent avec elle,
39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:	39 si j'ai mangé de ses produits sans payer, fait expirer ses propriétaires,
40 Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.	40 qu'au lieu de froment y poussent les ronces, à la place de l'orge, l'herbe fétide. Fin des paroles de Job.
