VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Erat autem quidam languens Lazarus a Bethania, de castello Mariæ et Marthæ sororis ejus.1 There was a man named Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister, Martha, and he wasil .
(Maria autem erat quæ unxit Dominum unguento, et extersit pedes ejus capillis suis : cujus frater Lazarus infirmabatur.)2 It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment andwiped his feet with her hair.
Miserunt ergo sorores ejus ad eum dicentes : Domine, ecce quem amas infirmatur.3 The sisters sent this message to Jesus, 'Lord, the man you love is il .'
Audiens autem Jesus dixit eis : Infirmitas hæc non est ad mortem, sed pro gloria Dei, ut glorificetur Filius Dei per eam.4 On receiving the message, Jesus said, 'This sickness will not end in death, but it is for God's glory sothat through it the Son of God may be glorified.'
Diligebat autem Jesus Martham, et sororem ejus Mariam, et Lazarum.5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus,
Ut ergo audivit quia infirmabatur, tunc quidem mansit in eodem loco duobus diebus ;6 yet when he heard that he was il he stayed where he was for two more days
deinde post hæc dixit discipulis suis : Eamus in Judæam iterum.7 before saying to the disciples, 'Let us go back to Judaea.'
Dicunt ei discipuli : Rabbi, nunc quærebant te Judæi lapidare, et iterum vadis illuc ?8 The disciples said, 'Rabbi, it is not long since the Jews were trying to stone you; are you going backthere again?'
Respondit Jesus : Nonne duodecim sunt horæ diei ? Si quis ambulaverit in die, non offendit, quia lucem hujus mundi videt :9 Jesus replied: Are there not twelve hours in the day? No one who walks in the daytime stumbles,having the light of this world to see by;
si autem ambulaverit in nocte, offendit, quia lux non est in eo.10 anyone who walks around at night stumbles, having no light as a guide.
Hæc ait, et post hæc dixit eis : Lazarus amicus noster dormit : sed vado ut a somno excitem eum.11 He said that and then added, 'Our friend Lazarus is at rest; I am going to wake him.'
Dixerunt ergo discipuli ejus : Domine, si dormit, salvus erit.12 The disciples said to him, 'Lord, if he is at rest he wil be saved.'
Dixerat autem Jesus de morte ejus : illi autem putaverunt quia de dormitione somni diceret.13 Jesus was speaking of the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by 'rest' he meant 'sleep';
Tunc ergo Jesus dixit eis manifeste : Lazarus mortuus est :14 so Jesus put it plainly, 'Lazarus is dead;
et gaudeo propter vos, ut credatis, quoniam non eram ibi, sed eamus ad eum.15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there because now you will believe. But let us go to him.'
Dixit ergo Thomas, qui dicitur Didymus, ad condiscipulos : Eamus et nos, ut moriamur cum eo.16 Then Thomas -- known as the Twin -- said to the other disciples, 'Let us also go to die with him.'
Venit itaque Jesus : et invenit eum quatuor dies jam in monumento habentem.17 On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already.
(Erat autem Bethania juxta Jerosolymam quasi stadiis quindecim.)18 Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem,
Multi autem ex Judæis venerant ad Martham et Mariam, ut consolarentur eas de fratre suo.19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.
Martha ergo ut audivit quia Jesus venit, occurrit illi : Maria autem domi sedebat.20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in thehouse.
Dixit ergo Martha ad Jesum : Domine, si fuisses hic, frater meus non fuisset mortuus :21 Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,
sed et nunc scio quia quæcumque poposceris a Deo, dabit tibi Deus.22 but even now I know that God will grant whatever you ask of him.'
Dicit illi Jesus : Resurget frater tuus.23 Jesus said to her, 'Your brother wil rise again.'
Dicit ei Martha : Scio quia resurget in resurrectione in novissimo die.24 Martha said, 'I know he wil rise again at the resurrection on the last day.'
Dixit ei Jesus : Ego sum resurrectio et vita : qui credit in me, etiam si mortuus fuerit, vivet :25 Jesus said: I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, wil live,
et omnis qui vivit et credit in me, non morietur in æternum. Credis hoc ?26 and whoever lives and believes in me wil never die. Do you believe this?
Ait illi : Utique Domine, ego credidi quia tu es Christus, Filius Dei vivi, qui in hunc mundum venisti.27 'Yes, Lord,' she said, 'I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come intothis world.'
Et cum hæc dixisset, abiit, et vocavit Mariam sororem suam silentio, dicens : Magister adest, et vocat te.28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in a low voice, 'The Master ishere and wants to see you.'
Illa ut audivit, surgit cito, et venit ad eum ;29 Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him.
nondum enim venerat Jesus in castellum : sed erat adhuc in illo loco, ubi occurrerat ei Martha.30 Jesus had not yet come into the vil age; he was still at the place where Martha had met him.
Judæi ergo, qui erant cum ea in domo, et consolabantur eam, cum vidissent Mariam quia cito surrexit, et exiit, secuti sunt eam dicentes : Quia vadit ad monumentum, ut ploret ibi.31 When the Jews who were in the house comforting Mary saw her get up so quickly and go out, theyfol owed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
Maria ergo, cum venisset ubi erat Jesus, videns eum, cecidit ad pedes ejus, et dicit ei : Domine, si fuisses hic, non esset mortuus frater meus.32 Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him she threw herself at his feet, saying, 'Lord, if youhad been here, my brother would not have died.'
Jesus ergo, ut vidit eam plorantem, et Judæos, qui venerant cum ea, plorantes, infremuit spiritu, et turbavit seipsum,33 At the sight of her tears, and those of the Jews who had come with her, Jesus was greatly distressed,and with a profound sigh he said,
et dixit : Ubi posuistis eum ? Dicunt ei : Domine, veni, et vide.34 'Where have you put him?' They said, 'Lord, come and see.'
Et lacrimatus est Jesus.35 Jesus wept;
Dixerunt ergo Judæi : Ecce quomodo amabat eum.36 and the Jews said, 'See how much he loved him!'
Quidam autem ex ipsis dixerunt : Non poterat hic, qui aperuit oculos cæci nati, facere ut hic non moreretur ?37 But there were some who remarked, 'He opened the eyes of the blind man. Could he not haveprevented this man's death?'
Jesus ergo rursum fremens in semetipso, venit ad monumentum. Erat autem spelunca, et lapis superpositus erat ei.38 Sighing again, Jesus reached the tomb: it was a cave with a stone to close the opening.
Ait Jesus : Tollite lapidem. Dicit ei Martha, soror ejus qui mortuus fuerat : Domine, jam fœtet, quatriduanus est enim.39 Jesus said, 'Take the stone away.' Martha, the dead man's sister, said to him, 'Lord, by now he willsmel ; this is the fourth day since he died.'
Dicit ei Jesus : Nonne dixi tibi quoniam si credideris, videbis gloriam Dei ?40 Jesus replied, 'Have I not told you that if you believe you wil see the glory of God?'
Tulerunt ergo lapidem : Jesus autem, elevatis sursum oculis, dixit : Pater, gratias ago tibi quoniam audisti me.41 So they took the stone away. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said: Father, I thank you for hearingmy prayer.
Ego autem sciebam quia semper me audis, sed propter populum qui circumstat, dixi : ut credant quia tu me misisti.42 I myself knew that you hear me always, but I speak for the sake of all these who are standing aroundme, so that they may believe it was you who sent me.
Hæc cum dixisset, voce magna clamavit : Lazare, veni foras.43 When he had said this, he cried in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'
Et statim prodiit qui fuerat mortuus, ligatus pedes, et manus institis, et facies illius sudario erat ligata. Dixit eis Jesus : Solvite eum et sinite abire.44 The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with strips of material, and a cloth over his face.Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, let him go free.'
Multi ergo ex Judæis, qui venerant ad Mariam, et Martham, et viderant quæ fecit Jesus, crediderunt in eum.45 Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what he did, believed in him,
Quidam autem ex ipsis abierunt ad pharisæos, et dixerunt eis quæ fecit Jesus.
but some of them went to the Pharisees to tel them what Jesus had done.
Collegerunt ergo pontifices et pharisæi concilium, et dicebant : Quid facimus, quia hic homo multa signa facit ?47 Then the chief priests and Pharisees cal ed a meeting. 'Here is this man working al these signs,' theysaid, 'and what action are we taking?
Si dimittimus eum sic, omnes credent in eum, et venient Romani, et tollent nostrum locum, et gentem.48 If we let him go on in this way everybody wil believe in him, and the Romans wil come and suppressthe Holy Place and our nation.'
Unus autem ex ipsis, Caiphas nomine, cum esset pontifex anni illius, dixit eis : Vos nescitis quidquam,49 One of them, Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said, 'You do not seem to have grasped thesituation at al ;
nec cogitatis quia expedit vobis ut unus moriatur homo pro populo, et non tota gens pereat.50 you fail to see that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people, rather than that thewhole nation should perish.'
Hoc autem a semetipso non dixit : sed cum esset pontifex anni illius, prophetavit, quod Jesus moriturus erat pro gente,51 He did not speak in his own person, but as high priest of that year he was prophesying that Jesuswas to die for the nation-
et non tantum pro gente, sed ut filios Dei, qui erant dispersi, congregaret in unum.52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather together into one the scattered children of God.
Ab illo ergo die cogitaverunt ut interficerent eum.
From that day onwards they were determined to kill him.
Jesus ergo jam non in palam ambulabat apud Judæos, sed abiit in regionem juxta desertum, in civitatem quæ dicitur Ephrem, et ibi morabatur cum discipulis suis.54 So Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but left the district for a town cal ed Ephraim,in the country bordering on the desert, and stayed there with his disciples.
Proximum autem erat Pascha Judæorum, et ascenderunt multi Jerosolymam de regione ante Pascha, ut sanctificarent seipsos.55 The Jewish Passover was drawing near, and many of the country people who had gone up toJerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves
Quærebant ergo Jesum, et colloquebantur ad invicem, in templo stantes : Quid putatis, quia non venit ad diem festum ? Dederant autem pontifices et pharisæi mandatum ut si quis cognoverit ubi sit, indicet, ut apprehendant eum.56 were looking out for Jesus, saying to one another as they stood about in the Temple, 'What do youthink? Will he come to the festival or not?'
The chief priests and Pharisees had by now given their orders: anyone who knew where he was mustinform them so that they could arrest him.
