1 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen in deserto Sinai in tabernaculo fœderis, prima die mensis secundi, anno altero egressionis eorum ex Ægypto, dicens :	1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, in the desert of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the secondmonth, in the second year after the exodus from Egypt, and said:
2 Tollite summam universæ congregationis filiorum Israël per cognationes et domos suas, et nomina singulorum, quidquid sexus est masculini	2 'Take a census of the whole community of Israelites by clans and families, taking a count of the namesof al the males, head by head.
3 a vigesimo anno et supra, omnium virorum fortium ex Israël, et numerabitis eos per turmas suas, tu et Aaron.	3 You and Aaron wil register al those in Israel, twenty years of age and over, fit to bear arms, companyby company;
4 Eruntque vobiscum principes tribuum ac domorum in cognationibus suis,	4 you wil have one man from each tribe, the head of his family, to help you.
5 quorum ista sunt nomina : de Ruben, Elisur, filius Sedeur ;	5 'These are the names of those who must help you: For Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur.
6 de Simeon, Salamiel filius Surisaddai ;	6 For Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.

11 de Benjamin, Abidan filius Gedeonis ;	11 For Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni.
12 de Dan, Ahiezer filius Ammisaddai ;	12 For Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.

15 de Nephthali, Ahira filius Enan.	15 For Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.'
16 Hi nobilissimi principes multitudinis per tribus et cognationes suas, et capita exercitus Israël,	16 These were men of repute in the community; they were the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the headsof Israel's thousands.
17 quos tulerunt Moyses et Aaron cum omni vulgi multitudine :	17 Moses and Aaron took these men who had been named
18 et congregaverunt primo die mensis secundi, recensentes eos per cognationes, et domos, ac familias, et capita, et nomina singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra,	18 and on the first day of the second month they mustered the whole community. The Israelitesestablished their pedigrees by clans and families, and one by one the names of all men of twenty years and overwere recorded.
19 sicut præceperat Dominus Moysi. Numeratique sunt in deserto Sinai.	19 As Yahweh had ordered, Moses registered them in the desert of Sinai.
20 De Ruben primogenito Israëlis per generationes et familias ac domos suas, et nomina capitum singulorum, omne quod sexus est masculini a vigesimo anno et supra, procedentium ad bellum,	20 Once the pedigrees of the descendants of Reuben, Israel's first-born, had been established by clansand families, the names of all the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
21 quadraginta sex millia quingenti.	21 The total of these for the tribe of Reuben was forty-six thousand five hundred.
22 De filiis Simeon per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina et capita singulorum, omne quod sexus est masculini a vigesimo anno et supra, procedentium ad bellum,	22 Once the pedigrees of Simeon's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
23 quinquaginta novem millia trecenti.	23 The total of these for the tribe of Simeon was fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
24 De filiis Gad per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina singulorum a viginti annis et supra, omnes qui ad bella procederent,	24 Once the pedigrees of Gad's descendants had been established by clans and families, the names ofal the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
25 quadraginta quinque millia sexcenti quinquaginta.	25 The total of these for the tribe of Gad was forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.
26 De filiis Juda per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum, per nomina singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,	26 Once the pedigrees of Judah's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
27 recensiti sunt septuaginta quatuor millia sexcenti.	27 The total of these for the tribe of Judah was seventy-four thousand six hundred.
28 De filiis Issachar, per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum, per nomina singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui ad bella procederent,	28 Once the pedigrees of Issachar's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
29 recensiti sunt quinquaginta quatuor millia quadringenti.	29 The total of these for the tribe of Issachar was fifty-four thousand four hundred.
30 De filiis Zabulon per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,	30 Once the pedigrees of Zebulun's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
31 quinquaginta septem millia quadringenti.	31 The total of these for the tribe of Zebulun was fifty-seven thousand four hundred.
32 De filiis Joseph, filiorum Ephraim per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,	32 As regards the descendants of Joseph: once the pedigrees of Ephraim's descendants had beenestablished by clans and families, the names of all the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, wererecorded one by one.
33 quadraginta millia quingenti.	33 The total of these for the tribe of Ephraim was forty thousand five hundred.
34 Porro filiorum Manasse per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina singulorum a viginti annis et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,	34 Once the pedigrees of Manasseh's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
35 triginta duo millia ducenti.	35 The total of these for the tribe of Manasseh was thirty-two thousand two hundred.
36 De filiis Benjamin per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt nominibus singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,	36 Once the pedigrees of Benjamin's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
37 triginta quinque millia quadringenti.	37 The total of these for the tribe of Benjamin was thirty-five thousand four hundred.
38 De filiis Dan per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt nominibus singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,	38 Once the pedigrees of Dan's descendants had been established by clans and families, the names ofal the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
39 sexaginta duo millia septingenti.	39 The total of these for the tribe of Dan was sixty-two thousand seven hundred.
40 De filiis Aser per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,	40 Once the pedigrees of Asher's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
41 quadraginta millia et mille quingenti.	41 The total of these for the tribe of Asher was forty-one thousand five hundred.
42 De filiis Nephthali per generationes et familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt nominibus singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, omnes qui poterant ad bella procedere,	42 Once the pedigrees of Naphtali's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
43 quinquaginta tria millia quadringenti.	43 The total of these for the tribe of Naphtali was fifty-three thousand four hundred.
44 Hi sunt, quos numeraverunt Moyses et Aaron, et duodecim principes Israël, singulos per domos cognationum suarum.	44 Such were the men registered by Moses, Aaron and the leaders of Israel, of whom there were twelve,each representing his family.
45 Fueruntque omnis numerus filiorum Israël per domos et familias suas a vigesimo anno et supra, qui poterant ad bella procedere,	45 Al the Israelites of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were counted by families.
46 sexcenta tria millia virorum quingenti quinquaginta.	46 Altogether, the total came to six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty.
47 Levitæ autem in tribu familiarum suarum non sunt numerati cum eis.	47 But the Levites and their tribes were not included in the count.
48 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens :	48 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
49 Tribum Levi noli numerare, neque pones summam eorum cum filiis Israël :	49 'Do not, however, take a census of the Levites, or register them with the other Israelites,
50 sed constitue eos super tabernaculum testimonii et cuncta vasa ejus, et quidquid ad cæremonias pertinet. Ipsi portabunt tabernaculum et omnia utensilia ejus : et erunt in ministerio, ac per gyrum tabernaculi metabuntur.	50 but enrol the Levites to take charge of the Dwel ing where the Testimony is and of al its furnishingsand belongings. They must carry the Dwel ing and al its furnishings; they must look after the Dwel ing and pitchtheir camp round it.
51 Cum proficiscendum fuerit, deponent Levitæ tabernaculum ; cum castrametandum, erigent. Quisquis externorum accesserit, occidetur.	51 Whenever the Dwelling is moved, the Levites will dismantle it; whenever the Dwel ing stops for thenight, the Levites wil erect it. Any unauthorised person coming near it will be put to death.
52 Metabuntur autem castra filii Israël unusquisque per turmas et cuneos atque exercitum suum.	52 The Israelites wil pitch their tents, each in their own encampment and by their own standard,company by company,
53 Porro Levitæ per gyrum tabernaculi figent tentoria, ne fiat indignatio super multitudinem filiorum Israël, et excubabunt in custodiis tabernaculi testimonii.	53 but the Levites wil pitch their tents round the Dwel ing where the Testimony is. In this way Retributionwil be kept from fal ing on the whole community of Israelites, and the Levites wil keep charge of the Dwel ing ofthe Testimony.'
54 Fecerunt ergo filii Israël juxta omnia quæ præceperat Dominus Moysi.	54 The Israelites did exactly as Yahweh had ordered Moses. They did as he said.
