BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Lussuriosa cosa è il vino, e madre de' tumulti l'ebbrezza; chiunque ha genio a tali cose non sarà saggio.	1 Wine is reckless, liquor rowdy; unwise is anyone whom it seduces.
2 Come il ruggito del lione, cosi è l'ira del re; chi lo irrita pecca contro l'anima propria.	2 Like the roaring of a lion is the fury of a king; whoever provokes him sins against himself.
3 E onore per l'uomo l'allontanarsi dalle contese: ma tutti gli stolti si immischiano nelle alterazioni.	3 It is praiseworthy to stop short of a law-suit; only a fool flies into a rage.
4 Il pigro non volle arare a causa del freddo: egli adunque anderà accattando nell'estate, e non gli sarà dato nulla.	4 In autumn the idler does not plough, at harvest time he looks -- nothing there!
5 Come un'acqua profonda cosi i consigli dell'uomo nel cuore di lui: ma l'uomo sapiente li trarrà a galla.	5 The resources of the human heart are like deep waters: an understanding person has only to draw onthem.
6 Molti uomini sono chiamati misericordiosi: ma un uomo fedele, chi lo ritroverà?	6 Many describe themselves as people of faithful love, but who can find someone real y to be trusted?
7 Il giusto, che cammina nella sua semplicità, lascerà beati dietro a se i suoi figliuoli.	7 The upright whose ways are blameless -- blessed the children who come after!
8 Il re assise sul trono, dove rende giustizia, dissipa col suo sguardo ogni male.	8 A king enthroned on the judgement seat with one look scatters al that is evil.
9 Chi è, che dir possa: Il mio cuore è mondo? io son puro da qualunque peccato?	9 Who can say, 'I have cleansed my heart, I am purified of my sin'?
10 Doppio peso, doppia misura: ambedue queste cose sono abboininevoli presso Dio.	10 One weight here, another there; here one measure, there another: both alike are abhorrent toYahweh.
11 Dalle inclinazioni del fanciullo si riconosce, sé le opere di lui siano per essere pure, e rette.	11 A young man's character appears in what he does, if his behaviour is pure and straight.
12 L'orecchio che ascolta, e l'occhio che vede, l'uno, e l'altro è opera del Signore.	12 Ear that hears, eye that sees, Yahweh has made both of these.
13 Non amare il sonno affin di non essere oppresso dall'indigenza: tieni aperti gli occhi, ed avrai pane da saziarti,	13 Do not love sleep or you will know poverty; keep your eyes open and have your fil of food.
14 E cosa cattiva, è cosa cattiva, dice ogni compratore; ma quando se n'è ito (con essa), allora ne fa festa.	14 'No good, no good!' says the buyer, but he goes off congratulating himself.
15 Cosa preziosa è l'oro, e le molte gemme: e vaso prezioso sono le labbra scienziate.	15 There are gold and jewels of every type, but a priceless ornament is speech informed by knowledge.
16 Prendi la veste di colui, che entra mallevadore per uno straniero, e portati dalla casa di lui il pegno pel debito del forestiero.	16 Take the man's clothes! He has gone surety for a stranger. Take a pledge from him to the profit ofpersons unknown!
17 Dolce è all'uomo il pane di menzogna; ma questo in appresso gli empie la bocca di pietruzze.	17 Bread is sweet when it is got by fraud, but later the mouth is ful of grit.
18 Col consiglio si da vigore alle imprese: e le guerre si governano colla prudenza.	18 Plans are matured by consultation; take wise advice when waging war.
19 Non aver familiarità con un uomo che rivela i segreti, ed è raggiratore, e fa grandi sparate.	19 The bearer of gossip lets out secrets; do not mingle with chatterers.
20 Chi usa cattive parole verso il padre, o la madre, la sua lucerna si spegnerà nel forte delle tenebre.	20 Whoever curses father or mother wil have his lamp put out in the deepest darkness.
21 Il patrimonio, che fu dapprima messo insieme con celerità, sarà privo di benedizione nel fine.	21 Property quickly come by at first wil not be blessed in the end.
22 Non dire: Mi vendicherò: aspetta il Signore, ed ei ti libererà.	22 Do not say, 'I shall repay evil'; put your hope in Yahweh and he wil keep you safe.
23 E abbominevol cosa dinanzi al Signore la doppia bilancia: non è buona cosa la stadera falsa.	23 One weight here, another there: this is abhorrent to Yahweh, false scales are not good.
24 Il Signore è quegli che dirige i passi degli uomini: e chi è degli uomini, che possa conoscere la via, che dee battere?	24 Yahweh guides the steps of the powerful: but who can comprehend human ways?
25 E rovina per l'uomo il divorare i santi, e tornar a fare dei voti.	25 Anyone is trapped who cries 'Dedicated!' and begins to reflect only after the vow.
26 Il saggio re disperge gli empj, e alza sopra di essi un arco trionfale.	26 A wise king winnows the wicked and makes the wheel pass over them.
27 Fiaccola divina è lo spirito dell'uomo, il quale penetra tutti i nascondigli delle viscere.	27 The human spirit is the lamp of Yahweh -- searching the deepest self.
28 La misericordia, e la giustizia custodiscono il re, e il trono di lui si rende stabile colla clemenza.	28 Faithful love and loyalty mount guard over the king, his throne is founded on saving justice.
29 La gloria de' giovani è la loro fortezza, e la dignità de' vecchi sta nella loro canizie.	29 The pride of the young is their strength, the ornament of the old, grey hairs.
30 Si purgano i mali colle lividure delle percosse, e co' tagli, che vadano fino alle interne viscere.	30 Wounding strokes are good medicine for evil, blows have an effect on the inmost self.
