| 1 E Adamo conobbe la sua moglie Eva, la quale concepì, e partorì Caino, dicendo: Ho fatto acquisto di un uomo per dono di Dio. | 1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, "I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD." |
| 2 E di poi partorì il fratello di lui, Abele. E Abele fu pastore di pecore, e Caino agricoltore. | 2 And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a tiller of the ground. |
| 3 Ed avvenne, che da lì a lungo tempo offerse Caino doni al Signore de' frutti della terra. | 3 In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, |
| 4 Abele ancora offerse de' primogeniti del suo gregge, e de' più grassi tra essi: e il Signore volse lo sguardo ad Abele, e a' suoi doni; | 4 and Abel brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, |
| 5 Ma non diede uno sguardo a Caino, né ai doni di lui: e Caino si accese di grande sdegno, e portava il volto dimesso. | 5 but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. |
| 6 E il Signore disse a lui: Per qual motivo sei adirato? e perché porti la faccia in seno? | 6 The LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry, and why has your countenance fallen? |
| 7 Non è egli vero, che se farai bene, bene averai: e se farai male, sarà tosto alla tua porta il peccato? Ma l'appetito di esso sarà sotto di te; e tu gli comanderai. | 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is couching at the door; its desire is for you, but you must master it." |
| 8 E Caino disse ad Abele suo fratello: Andiamo fuora. E quando furono alla campagna, Caino investì il suo fratello Abele: e lo uccise. | 8 Cain said to Abel his brother, "Let us go out to the field." And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and killed him. |
| 9 E il Signore disse a Caino: Dov'è Abele tuo fratello? Ed ei rispose: Nol so: son io forse il guardiano di mio fratello? | 9 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" He said, "I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?" |
| 10 E il Signore gli disse: Che hai tu fatto? la voce del sangue di tuo fratello grida a me dalla terra. | 10 And the LORD said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground. |
| 11 Or tu adunque sarai maledetto sopra la terra, la quale ha aperta la sua bocca, ed ha ricevuto il sangue del tuo fratello dalla tua mano. | 11 And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. |
| 12 Dopo che tu l'avrai lavorata, non darà a te i suoi frutti: tu sarai vagabondo e fuggiasco sopra la terra. | 12 When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength; you shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth." |
| 13 E Caino disse al Signore: È sì grande il mio peccato, ch'io non posso meritar perdono. | 13 Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is greater than I can bear. |
| 14 Ecco che tu oggi mi discacci da questa terra, ed io mi nasconderò dalla tua faccia, e sarò vagabondo e fuggiasco per la terra: chiunque pertanto mi troverà, darammi la morte. | 14 Behold, thou hast driven me this day away from the ground; and from thy face I shall be hidden; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will slay me." |
| 15 E il Signore gli disse: Non sarà così: ma chiunque ucciderà Caino, avrà gastigo sette volte maggiore. E il Signore mise sopra Caino un segno, affinché nessuno di quegli, che lo incontrassero, lo uccidessero. | 15 Then the LORD said to him, "Not so! If any one slays Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold." And the LORD put a mark on Cain, lest any who came upon him should kill him. |
| 16 E andatosene Caino dalla faccia del Signore fuggitivo per la terra, abitò nel paese che è all'oriente di Eden. | 16 Then Cain went away from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, east of Eden. |
| 17 E Caino conobbe la sua moglie, la quale concepì, e partorì Henoch: ed egli fabbricò una città; a cui diede il nome di Henoc dal nome del suo figliuolo. | 17 Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch. |
| 18 Or Henoch generò Irad, e Irad generò Maviael, e Maviael generò Mathusael, e Mathusael generò Lamech. | 18 To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad was the father of Me-huja-el, and Me-huja-el the father of Me-thusha-el, and Me-thusha-el the father of Lamech. |
| 19 Il quale prese due mogli, una che ebbe nome Ada, un'altra che ebbe nome Sella. | 19 And Lamech took two wives; the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. |
| 20 E Ada partorì Jabel, che fu il padre di que' che abitano sotto le tende, e de' pastori. | 20 Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have cattle. |
| 21 Ed ebbe un fratello per nome Jubal: ed egli fu il padre dei sonatori di cetra e di organo. | 21 His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. |
| 22 Sella partorì anche Tubalcain, che lavorò di martello, e fu artefice di ogni sorta di lavori di rame e di ferro. Sorella poi di Tubalcain fu Noema. | 22 Zillah bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. |
| 23 E disse Lamech alle sue mogli, Ada, e Sella: Ascoltate la mia voce, o donne di Lamech, ponete mente alle mie parole: io uccisi un uomo con ferita fattagli da me, e un giovinetto co' miei colpi. | 23 Lamech said to his wives: "Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, hearken to what I say: I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. |
| 24 Sarà fatta vendetta dell'omicidio di Caino sette volte; di quel di Lamech settanta volte sette volte. | 24 If Cain is avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy-sevenfold." |
| 25 E Adamo ancora conobbe nuovamente la sua moglie: ed ella partorì un figliuolo, a cui pose il nome di Seth, dicendo: Il Signore mi ha data nuova discendenza in luogo di Abele ucciso da Caino. | 25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, "God has appointed for me another child instead of Abel, for Cain slew him." |
| 26 E nacque anche a Seth un figliuolo, ch'egli chiamò Enos: questi principiò ad invocare il nome del Signore. | 26 To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time men began to call upon the name of the LORD. |
